Child predators, human traffickers arrested

Dozens of suspected
child predators were re-
cently taken off the streets
as a result of “Operation
Millstone,” according to
Greenville County Sheriff
Will Lewis.
Authorities made 45
arrests and identified 31
more suspects after tar-
geting “predators, prosti-
tutes and johns.”

Life for one Greer family
changed in early February
when 16-year-old Chey-
enne Vandergrift began
fighting for her life after
complications from the
flu.
Cheyenne, a junior at
Greer High School, was
diagnosed with Type A flu
on Feb. 6. By that weekend,
Vandergrift’s life hung in
the balance due to heart
failure and other serious
medical issues.

program for medical stu-
dents.
Four programs are cur-
rently in the works, in-
cluding a family medicine
program, a neurology pro-
gram, a psychiatry pro-
gram and a program for
general surgery.

dential townhome project
is in line to be developed
at 1484 Henderson Gap
Road in Greer.
A statement of intent
has been provided to the
Greer Planning Advisory
Committee (PAC), which
has its next regular meet-
ing on March 8.
“The development
planned for this +/-9.5-
acre tract along Hender-
son Gap Road will utilize
the Design Review District
(DRD) zoning classifica-
tion,” according to the
statement. “The communi-
ty will consist of attached
single-family residential
homes. The roads with-
in the community will be
built to private standards
and turned over to the
Home Owners Association
(HOA) once completed.”
Infrastructure improve-
ments will consist of
rolled curb and gutter
along internal roads, pub-
lic water mains, public
sewer mains, storm drain-
age, and common grounds
according to documents.
An entrance monument
and landscaping will be
installed along the en-
trance off Henderson Gap
Road, and a stormwater
management pond will be
installed in the rear of the
development to address
stormwater runoff and
water quality treatment
for the community.
“The overall density of
the project will not exceed
(65) single-family town-
home units or roughly 7.0
units per acre,” according
to the statement.
The project will be
phased with approximate-
ly 29 townhome units in
Phase I, 20 in Phase II, and
approximately 13 in Phase
III.
“If the development pro-
ceeds as expected, build-
out will be complete with-
in approximately three
years,” according to the
statement.
The townhomes will
have a mixture of sizes
and all include a minimum
one-car garage. The min-
imum square footage per
home will be 1,200 square
feet with most ranging
from 1,400 SF – 2,000 SF.
There is no maximum
townhome unit size. Ex-
terior building materials
may consist of vinyl sid-
ing, shake siding, Hardie
Board, brick, and/or stone.
Exteriors may contain one
specific material or combi-
nation of all five materials
in some cases.
“The proposed develop-
ment will include approx-
imately 5.0 acres of com-
mon area with maximum
efforts to preserve exist-

(and perhaps many of you) don’t really
consider myself a writer.
After all, the idea hadn’t occurred to
me until an editor of a local paper back
in 2006 asked me if I’d be interested in
writing a weekly column. Which turned
into a syndicated column. Which meant
some very well meaning readers nagged
me into writing a novel which I did last
year.
Don’t get me wrong--I enjoy writing,
especially this column because it’s easy.
The novel, however, almost killed me
because I haven’t the discipline that real
authors have who dedicate a specific
time to write each day. Typically impa-
tient, I had to knock it out in one sitting.
Which lasted eight weeks. Surrounded
by coffee cups and beer bottles littering
the kitchen table, depending on what
hour it was. Finished and triumphant, I
swore off caffeine and hung my liver out
to dry.
But I don’t really consider myself a
writer. Or a comic. Or an actress. Mostly
I consider myself a horsewoman who
takes whatever gig comes around to pay
the feed and vet bills. And if there’s a
horse I really want, I might knock out

My eyes casually swept over the body of
the email. And then I caught my breath.
The inquiry was that this particular
staff writer, Kathryn Schulz, wanted to
interview me.  deck cracked open...
Wait a minute, I thought, googling her
name furiously, surely not that Kathryn
Schulz. Not the Pulitzer Prize winning
Kathryn Schulz who also has served as
the book reviewer for New York Mag-
azine? Law, Law--suddenly I realized
that I was not only considered a writer,

Helplessness grows along
with identity theft scams
Once upon a time, stealing a person’s identi-
ty would have seemed far fetched. The stuff of
movies. Now it appears to be easy.
And the problem is growing.
The 2018 Identity Fraud Study released in Feb-
ruary by Javelin Strategy & Research revealed
that the number of identity fraud victims in-
creased by 8 percent (rising to 16.7 million U.S.
consumers) in the last year, a record high since
the firm began tracking identity fraud in 2003.
The study found that despite industry efforts
to prevent identity fraud, fraudsters success-
fully adapted to net 1.3 million more victims
in 2017, with the amount stolen rising to $16.8
billion. With the adoption of EMV (embedded
chip) cards and terminals, the types of identity
fraud continued to shift online and away from
physical stores. The complexity of fraud is also
on the rise as criminals are opening more new
accounts as a means of compromising accounts
consumers already have. This last year saw a
notable change in how fraud is being commit-
ted. While credit card accounts remained the
most prevalent targets for new account fraud,
there was significant growth in the opening of
new intermediary accounts, such as email pay-
ments (e.g. PayPal) and other internet accounts
(e.g. e-commerce merchants such as Amazon)
by fraudsters. Although not as easily mone-
tized alone, these account types are invaluable
in helping fraudsters transfer funds from the
existing accounts of their victims.
The study also found three significant chang-
es in data breaches in 2017.
• Nearly a third (30 percent) of U.S. consum-
ers were notified of a breach in the past year,
up from 12 percent in 2016.
• For the first time ever, Social Security num-
bers (35 percent) were compromised more than
credit card numbers (30 percent) in breaches.
• Finally, data breaches are causing consum-
ers to lose trust in institutions. These trends
combined to cause consumers to shift the
perceived responsibility for preventing fraud
from themselves to other entities, such as their
financial institution or the companies storing

Driggers said. “We could
certainly look at another
community.”

brought the matter to
council to determine in-
terest before allotting city
staff resources to pursue a
change.
“I think there’s enough
interest,” Mayor Danner
said. “We’ll see if we can
shape something that
would be agreeable to
council in the future.”
City staff will now look
into drafting a revised or-
dinance, and council will
look to discuss the matter
again in the near future.

the home; a daughter,

of Greer; two brothers,

Lynda’s work includ-
ed Dayco in Waynesville,
North Carolina, Milliken
and State Auto in Greer,
South Carolina. She en-
joyed spending time work-
ing in the yard and plant-
ing flowers. Lynda enjoyed
going to Lake Chatuge in
the summer where she
and her sisters laid in
the sun for hours. Lyn-
da enjoyed camping and
reader and enjoyed long
novels. Lynda was friend-
ly yet somewhat reserved.
She was kind, genuine,
loving, soft-spoken and
quiet but would speak-
up for what she believed
in. She had the biggest
laugh and most beautiful
smile. Lynda epitomized
strength and was the rock
for her family. She had a
fierce love for her daugh-
ters, grandchildren and
great-granddaughter and
was so proud of them.  12.

Tina said the physicians
were deciding wheth-

a transfer to Charleston
where there is a Pediat-
ric Cardiac Intensive Care
Unity (PCICU). When they
determined she may not
survive, they put her on
life support with an Ex-
tracorporeal membrane
oxygenation (ECMO) ma-
chine at Greenville Memo-
rial. On Sunday night, they
transferred Chey by air to
the Medical University of
South Carolina (MUSC) in
Charleston, due to her left
ventricle not responding
to the ECMO. Chey arrived
by noon on Monday, Feb.
“The day that we ar-
rived, they immediately
started talking about heart
transplants,” Tina said.
“Her heart just wasn’t do-
ing anything.”
“We had some very diffi-
cult conversations,” with-
in six hours of arriving,
she said. “Then, it was just
kind of a waiting game.”
On Wednesday, Feb. 21,
Chey had open heart sur-
gery to remove the blood
clots, and she came off life
support.
“Her heart continued to
heal,” Tina said. “In the
meanwhile, her liver had
taken a hit.”
“Right now, where we’re
at, her heart’s doing fan-
tastic. Blood pressure is
normal. She’s still pretty
groggy, not 100 percent
awake,” she said. “She’s
very determined to get out
of bed.”
RAISING FUNDS
It wasn’t long before the
Greer community became
aware of the situation and
jumped I to help, putting
together fundraisers and
bringing in thousands of
dollars to contribute to
medical costs.
“It’s been overwhelming
the amount that has been
collected,” Tina said.
“We’ve actually started
an account just for Chey-
enne. We wanted to make
sure that money was put
in a certain location.”
Those funds are being

mans renovated the place
themselves.
“It took us a little bit
longer, but we paid for it
as we did it,” James Nor-
man said. “We didn’t want
to create a lot of debt.”
“That’s my business
manager,” Norman said.
“He’s the CFO.”
Denise and James have
been married for 31 years
with two grown children.
“We’ve been open a
month,” Norman said.
“Cooking’s always been a
part of my life.”
Growing up the young-
est of four girls, she
helped in the kitchen with
her dad, who was the main
cook in the family.
“I just enjoyed being in
the kitchen with him and
doing stuff. My mom al-
ways made sure that we
were well fed, but she
didn’t have a love of cook-

They’re from Mississippi.”
With her own family,
Norman prepared din-
ner for her two kids to
eat when their dad came
home from work.
“I’ve always loved it,
even when the kids were
little, cooking for them,”
she said. “We always had
family meal.”
“We sat down and had
dinner. It was just part of
our every day life. I’ve al-
ways enjoyed it.”
As a result, family and
friends started asking
Norman to prepare food
for special occasions, and
the business grew from
there. When her kids grad-
uated from high school,
her husband encouraged
her to go back to school.
“Culinary school seemed
like the perfect thing,” she
said.
The Normans own a wed-
ding venue in Landrum,
where they cater for wed-
dings and other events
such as corporate func-
tions and birthday parties.
“We like being in Greer,”
Norman said. “I didn’t
know anything about
Greer, but we love it.”
“Everybody’s been real
nice,” she said.

tivities, especially on so-
cial media. Know what
they’re doing and where
they are. Know what’s go-
ing on,” Lewis said. “Look
for changes in your kids’
behavior. You know their
demeanor and how they’re
feeling. Pay attention. Do
the right thing for your
kids and I promise you
will have less victims.”

Greer police address active shooter concerns

Hamby answered ques-
tions about active shoot-
er response during Greer
City Council’s monthly
meeting.
The topic is fresh in the
minds of many following a
mass shooting at a Florida
high school last month.
Council member Wry-
ley Bettis asked the chief
about local training of
school resource officers
(SRO) and response times.
“Individual scenarios
with active shooters are
all going to be unique and
different,” Hamby said. “A
lot of our personnel are
trained on the proper way
to address active shooters.
“Things have changed
from what they used to
recommend,” he said. “It’s
more of an immediate,
deliberate attack by what-
ever resources can be on
the ground immediately
instead of waiting on a
group of tactical officers
to go in together, which is
what they used to teach.
Now, officers are taught,
if you’re single or you’re
two officers, you’re going
directly at the shooter.
Officers are being taught
that pretty standard now.”

“As far as school re-
source officer training in
general, we’re spending
the money on sending
them to the best training
we can,” Hamby said.
The Greer Police De-
partment works with the
Greenville County School
District in an effort to en-
sure that all of the schools
within the City of Greer
have safety measures and
safety plans in place to
respond to a variety of
events.
“The Greer Police De-
partment also ensures
that our officers are high-
ly trained and able to
respond to any type of
incident that may occur
within our schools,” said
Lt. Patrick Fortenberry,
Public Information Officer
for the Greer PD.
Perry Bowens has been
a School Resource Officer
(SRO) for 16 years at Greer
High School, where he was
assigned by the Former
Chief of Police Dean Crisp
in April of 2002 because
he had been the Juvenile
Detective for nine years
prior.
The best part of his job
is “showing the students
that even if your child-
hood was not favorable
you can make it in life,”
Fortenberry said. “You
must decide that you want
to change the path that
you are on by thinking be-
fore you react and doing
the right thing.”
The hardest part is “see-
ing student’s give up with-
out giving life a chance to
develop,” he continued. “I
decided all long time ago
when I choose the Law
Enforcement Career that
I would treat people with
respect and show that I
care about them, and it
has not failed me yet.”

“This incident yielded
another case of an off-
white powdery substance
that was located near the
victim’s body,” a state-
ment from the sheriff’s
office read.
The third incident was
also on March 3 at a res-
idence on Junueau Court.
“Similar to the two pre-
viously described inci-
dents, an off-white pow-
der substance was located
near the victim. During the
course of investigation, it
was discovered that just
two weeks prior, the vic-
tim had received two ad-
ministered doses of Nar-
can after overdosing, and
during this incident,” the
sheriff’s office stated.
Police believe fentanyl
played a role in the over-
doses.
“Investigators believe
that there is a significant
cause for concern that the
substances consumed by
each of these victims was
mixed or cut with fentanyl
or a similar substance. Ac-
cording to drugabuse.gov,
fentanyl is a powerful syn-
thetic opioid that is simi-
lar to morphine but is 50
– 100 times more potent,”
the sheriff’s office said.
“The dangers of taking
any illegal drugs go with-
out saying, but fentanyl
is an extremely deadly
substance that has been
known to kill within min-
utes. We want to warn the
public that the problem ex-
ists. We urge every friend,
and/or family member
to intervene if they see
or know somebody who
might be struggling with
drug addiction.”

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
On Monday, deputies
from the Spartanburg
County Sheriff’s Office
responded to 4 Elmhurst
St., located in Spartanburg
County in reference to a
domestic call.
Upon arrival, officers
met with a male victim,
who stated his wife, Elis-
abeth Moss, cut his face
after an argument. The
victim stated the two were
in the process of getting a
divorce. The victim said an
argument resulted when
they couldn’t agree on
where the kids were going
to go to school.
The victim stated Moss
began throwing things and
when the husband went to
leave the residence, Moss
came from behind him
and dug her fingernails
into the side of his face
turning him around. The
officer observed fresh
cuts on the right side of
the victim’s face and on
tentionally grabbed the
victim’s face and turned
him around.
Due to both stories col-
laborating, physical mani-
festation of injury on the
victim’s face and lip, and
Moss openly admitting to
putting hands on the vic-
tim, officers found prob-
able cause to make an ar-
rest.
Moss was arrested for
domestic violence third
degree.
DISORDERLY CONDUCT
On Monday, Spartan-
burg County deputies re-
sponded to 169 Hadden
Heights Rd. in reference to
a threat.
Upon arrival, police lo-
cated Alexis Carter stand-
ing inside the doorway
of the business speaking
with an employee. Carter
was very agitated when
police arrived and was dis-
rupting the business, the
incident report stated.
When the officer spoke
to Carter, her initial state-
ment was “you better get
her.” The officer asked
what was going on and
had her step outside of

with a victim, who stated
that she had been Car-
ter’s roommate for three
weeks.
She stated that she
moved out this past Friday
and, when she did, Carter
started harassing her. Car-
ter has sent multiple text
about wanting her key and
wanting $40 more dollars
from the victim in regards
to the power bill. She used
profanity and cursed at
the victim in the text. Car-
ter had texted the victim
five times in less than two
minuets.
The officer was able to
read the text. Those text
got progressively more
hostile and aggressive the
more Carter communicat-
ed with the victim.
Carter continued yelling,
cursing, and screaming
at another female. Carter
was approaching that fe-
male with her fist balled
up. At that point she was
placed in handcuffs and
advised that she was un-
der arrest.
Carter was charged with
public disorderly conduct.

A Taylors man passed
away following a two-ve-
hicle crash last Friday, ac-
cording to the Greenville
County Coroner’s Office.
Charles Raekwon Guz-
man, Jr., 22, who was driv-
ing a 1995 Jaguar, was
traveling south on Greer
Highway (U.S. Highway
276) at approximately
8:22 a.m. when his vehi-
cle struck a curb. He then
overcorrected and crossed
into the northbound lanes
of traffic.
His vehicle was struck
broadside by a 2016
Dodge pickup truck that
was traveling northbound.
Guzman was pro-
nounced dead at the scene
with the cause of death be-
ing blunt force trauma.
This collision is being
investigated by the South
Carolina Highway Patrol
and the Greenville County
Coroner’s Office.

With six underclassmen
starters and a new head
coach, the Blue Ridge soft-
ball team won’t have long
to learn the ropes before
being tested.
The Tigers, however, ar-
en’t nervous about their
new surroundings.
“Even though the team
is young, the talent is ab-
solutely there,” said coach
Alecia Rhinehart.
“So far this preseason,
our bats have been domi-
nant,” she said. “No team
has shut us out and run
production is a huge plus
for us. We have several
power house hitters along
with speed and quickness
at any given point in the
line-up. We also have some
strong, key upperclassmen
that will be able to provide
guidance and direction for
the younger players. I am
super thrilled to see what
this group can accomplish
this year.”

trict championship in
2017, a veteran Eastside
baseball team has big-
ger and better goals this
spring.
“We return a good group
from last year that gained
some really good expe-
rience in the playoffs,”
head coach Scott Erwin
said. “We only have four
seniors, but we feel like
we have an experienced
group.”
Experience will be key
all over the diamond, but
especially on the mound,
Erwin said.
“We have really tried
to develop some depth
at pitching this year,” he
said. “With the pitch count
rules and the way the play-
offs are set up, you really
have to have multiple
pitchers that can go get
outs. Hopefully through-
out the season we can get
a lot of guys on the mound
to gain even more experi-
ence as the year goes on.

Heartbreak
M
y 5-month-old
daughter is accom-
plishing all kinds of
milestones.
She’s sitting up, laugh-
ing her head off, grabbing
everything, rolling over….
you name it. One mile-
stone I do not approve of,
however, is her new abili-
ty to break dad’s heart.
The more my daughter
accomplishes, the more I
realize I’m going to have
to actually be a parent
soon.
Up until this point, I’ve
just been keeping this
little one alive and as hap-
py as possible. But with
improved motor skills
comes decision making,
and each day you can
watch Penny’s wheels turn
as she maps out her next
move.
The one thing I’ve
feared recently is sep-
aration anxiety. One of
these days, I know I’m
going leave for work and
she’s going to pitch a fit.
At least that’s how it has
always played out in my
mind.
After all, she thinks I’m
figured out ways to make
her laugh, and anytime
we’re together we’re
smiling at each other and
playing all the games we
know how to play. Surely,
if she boycotts anybody, it
won’t be me. She’s always
going to be a daddy’s girl.
As I thought more about
this, I ended up creating
a jinx.
Two weeks ago we were
with some family and Pen-
ny did something she’d
never done before. She
began protesting anybody
that held her other than
her parents. I didn’t know
what to do. My grand-
mother, grandfather, aunt
and cousin each took
turns either picking her
up or talking to her, and
her reaction was the same
each time…
She’d pause, analyze
the situation, puff out her
bottom lip and let out a
pathetic cry.
While I felt bad for my
family, I liked being the
hero that rescued my
daughter from what she
perceived to be a scary
situation.
I’m the fun dad, remem-
ber? Penny and I are bud-
dies for life…inseparable.
Well, on Sunday the ta-
bles turned. We were with
a group of close friends
when we began discussing
Penny’s recent separation
anxiety. Thinking it’d be
funny, I convinced my
friend to lean over and
speak to my daughter,
knowing her reaction
would probably be the
puffy lip.
I was right. As soon as
he made eye contact and
spoke to her, tears.
After quickly realizing I
shouldn’t be making my 5
month old cry, I reached
out to grab her to get her
back in a cheerful mood.
Penny took one look at
me and did to me what
she’d been doing to so
many others.
“OOOOOOOOOH no.
This is not happening!” I
told her, getting up from
my chair. “You are not
gonna be scared of dad!”
I tried all of her favorite
noises. I tried to play all
of our favorite games. I
reminded her that I was
indeed the cool parent.
You name it. I couldn’t
soothe my baby.
She just wanted….her
mommy.
So now I know what the
rest of my life is going to
be like. This little girl. The
15-pound, 25-inch human
living in my house is
now capable of breaking
my heart with a simple
puffed out lip and some
crocodile tears.
It’s ok you guys. I know
the way to every girl’s
heart. I’ve been dipping
Penny’s pacifier in choc-
olate when the wife isn’t
looking.
Now we’ll see who she
wants during time’s of
uncertainty.

The North Greenville
baseball team split a dou-
ble header with Belmont
Abbey over the weekend,
taking game one before
falling in game two. Con-
nor Grant had six hits and
three RBI on the day while
Ethan Garner received his
third win of the season.
GAME 1
Pitching dominated the
first three innings of game
one. Belmont Abbey had
only three batters reach
base while NGU had none.
North Greenville struck in
the top of the fourth with
four runs. With the bas-
es loaded, Connor Grant
scored Josh Black with a
fielder’s choice to put the
Crusaders on the board.
Jeffrey Chandler then hit
his third home run of the
season to score three and
give North Greenville a 4-0
lead.
Belmont Abbey quickly
struck back in the bottom
of the inning with three
home runs that resulted
in five runs. It didn’t take
long for NGU to respond.
In the top of the fifth, a
two RBI double by Connor
Grant and an RBI-single by
Alex Williams put North
Greenville back ahead 7-5.
Kipp Rollings came in to
pitch at the bottom of the
seventh in relief of Ethan
Garner. Rollings would
allow just one hit, three
walks, and no runs in his

For the second straight
game, the first three in-
nings went scoreless.

through the right side to
score Parsons. Later in the

tionally scheduled strong
opponents all throughout
the year to better prepare
us for our region competi-
tion.”
The head coach said her
team is focusing less on
long-term goals and more
on personal goals.
“One big team goal that
we have is 100 percent ef-
fort, no matter what the
circumstance,” Rhinehart
said. “Our team has ad-
opted the slogan, ‘100 per-
cent, We Can, We Will, We
Must.’ It’s our goal to put
forth our best effort in any
situation. It is also an im-
portant goal for us to help
build Blue Ridge as whole
and put Blue Ridge on the
map, especially in the soft-
ball world. Another goal is
most definitely to win re-
gion. We have the utmost
ability to do this and it’s
super achievable.”
The Tigers will need
help from their base-run-
ners early to make up for
a short-handed pitching
staff.
“We have several power
house hitters, along with
consistent speedsters who
pose both a short and long
game threat,” Rhinehart
said. “We will have these
kids for several years.
Team chemistry is also a
group of girls support,
encourage and feed off of
each other.Our pitching
staff is limited. While what
we have (Ally Sullivan) is
tremendous, I would like
to build up a bigger staff
in the years to come.”

The Read and Feed sta-
tion began with a design
on paper before evolving
into a 3-D printer model, a
cardboard version and fi-
nally a wooden one; plans
for signage and door
styles (oven versus micro-
wave style) and competing
prototypes were adjusted
based on logistics; and
ideas for an electronic
alert system were scaled
back before the final
product was created.

“We did five, six, maybe
even 10 designs,” He said.
The Research and Mar-
keting teams gathered
statistics and developed a
video to encourage book
and food donations for
the station.
“I like dancing and act-
ing and doing a video was
something I was interest-
ed in so I thought that
would be fun,” said sev-
enth grader Kaitlyn John,
who was on the marketing
team, which also faced
competing ideas.
While some members
of the group suggested a
comedic approach, oth-
ers wanted a serious pro-
motional video. The team
compromised on a video
out of wood and actual-
ly make it a thing, so we
thought maybe someday,
but then Maker Ed and
Digital Promise Global
were working on this ini-
tiative called Maker Prom-
ise and they thought this
is a great way for students
to truly make an impact in
their community.”
In February 2017, the
organization sent out a
team to help the students
make the prototype a re-
ality–measuring, sawing,
hammering, painting and
signing with handprints–
before planning the move
to Woodland.
PROJECT IN ACTION
“Woodland is one of our
feeder schools. We want-
ed to keep (the station) in
our local community, and
they actually had started
a clothes closet program.
We thought that this could
be the perfect comple-
ment because families that
might be in need could get
a lot of different things in
the same location,” Jen-
kins said.
Since installation in the
school car line, the Read
and Feed station has been
used, according to Wood-
land Elementary Media
Specialist Courtney Rouse.

weekly and sort through
the books and food,” she
said.
The school has adver-
tised in its newsletter and
website how to donate and
use the station, and Li-
brary Cadets are planning
to sustain the box.
“Our school is very
thankful for the donation
of this project by RMS. It
is extra special because
many of our former Wood-
land alumnae that attend
RMS now helped to cre-
ate this,” Rouse said. “As
a Leader in Me school,
we love the fact that our
students are continuing
the leadership habits that
were learned in elementa-
ry school.”
FUTURE-READY
The Global Goals, Local
Solutions challenge is only
one of the activities that
Riverside Middle students
have tackled through the
Learning Studios program.
Other semesters have ad-
dressed social equity with
the creation of student
suggestion boxes and
gaming for learning that
saw a group design “The
Struggle is Real” game
which explored what it is
like to be a teenager.
These projects repre-
sent a shift in learning
and teaching technique
that focuses on tangible
experiences offered in a
shared space.
“It is an emerging thing,”
Jenkins said. “Most librar-
ies are moving to a new
model…more about em-
powering students to be
creators and innovators.
It’s not just you come to
the library and you check
out a book and you might
learn new things. It’s also
about taking knowledge
and creating something.”
The SC PTA Middle
School Teacher of the Year
has introduced robotics,
coding, 3-D printing, cook-
ie decorating, knitting and

events,” often
taught by teach-
ers or other students
with a particular skill,
are offered to students af-
ter school once or twice a
month.
“We make things avail-
able to students and
teachers through a ‘maker-
space’ that kind of enrich
the learning experience,
bring it more hands-on,”
she said. “It’s definitely a
shift away from libraries
being knowledge storing
spaces and becoming a
more active learning envi-
ronment.”

“I want people to know
it’s a place to do what
you want and also teach-
es you about other things
through projects…It’s for
people who really want
to learn, for people who
really want to read and
want to do more stuff,

join,” He said.
The educator with
a background in En-
glish and history can’t
believe she is teaching
students to use 3-D print-
ers and learn force and
motion with robotics.
“I pinch myself every-

kins, who has worked at
RMS for four years. “It’s
definitely been the most
fulfilling part [of my job]–
one of those things where
you see the connections
and all of a sudden (the
students) will come in and
say see what I made…It’s
been really, really fun to

be creative.”

“There are three garden
clubs in Greer,” said Don-
na Yarborough, President
of the Greer Council of
Garden Clubs. “The three
Garden Clubs go together
to make up what’s called
the Greer council.”
“The state of South Car-
olina has seven districts,
and here in the upstate,
there is the district called
the West Piedmont Dis-
trict, and the West Pied-
mont District is made up
of Greenville County, An-
derson, Abbeville, Green-
wood, Pickens, all of the
Garden Clubs in the Up-
state, so the district is
having a meeting,” she
continued.

has since been in several

Germany.

sion, graphic design and
anything that relates to
the media. Semiotics are
cool,” he said. “I became
a member of the West
Main Artist Co-op to ex-
plore creative collabora-
tions and to go back to my
craftsmen roots in print.”

on Youth Juried Art Exhi-

graduating from Spartan-

sota, Florida, she earned a
Bachelor of Fine Arts.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I re-
cently had a nuclear stress
test as a requirement for a
kidney transplant. The re-
sults of my test indicated
that I had sustained mod-
erate damage to my heart
as the result of a heart
attack. No further testing
could be done because of
the possible effect of dye
on my kidneys. Six months
later in a follow-up nuclear
test, my results were nor-
mal and I was told that the
problem was an artifact.
Would you explain what
an artifact is? -- M.J.N.
ANSWER: An artifact,
in this context, is any-
thing that can keep the
test from being interpret-
ed correctly. People often
think of medical tests as
definitive -- the stress test
shows that either you have
blockages in the arteries
in your heart or you don’t
-- but it usually is not so
clear. Even a perfectly nor-
mal stress test is possible
in people with blockages,
but the bigger the block-
age, the more likely we can
see them.
In women, breasts can
obscure the images from
the radioactive dye used
in a nuclear stress test,
making it seem as though
the inferior portion of the
heart isn’t getting enough
blood, which is one of the
most common artifacts
leading to a false-positive
diagnosis (when the test
says there is an abnormal-
ity but there isn’t). It may
be that on the follow-up
test, the technician did a
better job of placing the

Greer High School has
announced Daniela Busta-
mante Molina and Anna
Brown as the new cheer
coaches for 2018-2019.
Molina is a 2008 grad-
uate of Greer High with
three years of cheer and
tumble experience. She
cheered all stars hav-
ing competed in All-Star
Challenge (king of the
jungle, queen of the Nile,
battle under the big top)
and Cheer LTD Nacional
competitions in team divi-
sions as a flyer. After high
school she explored Med-
iterranean dance while in
she was on the Cheerlead-
ing Squad all four years.
She also participated in
Marching Band during
her middle school years
as a featured dancer for
the “G” Force Colorguard
along with being a fea-
tured dancer for the elite
Indoor Guard Group - "The
Cast". At Clemson Univer-
sity, Brown was a Tiger
Dancer with Tiger Band.
She is also on the Pro-
duction Staff of the Miss
South Carolina Pageant.

Buena Vista Elementary
will host its first Bobcat
Fun Run, Superhero Style,
on March 9.
Sponsors will pledge a
flat amount for the stu-
dent’s participation in
the Fun Run and pledge
money will be collected
the week after the fun run,
with all money due by Fri-
day, March 16.
The Fun Run will be
filled with music, fun, and
super prizes.

AT&T helps GMC prepare

students for success
A global corporation is
helping Greer Middle Col-
lege Charter High prepare
students to compete and
succeed in a global econ-
omy.
Terrence Ford, AT&T’s
regional director of Exter-
nal Affairs, recently visit-
ed the campus to present
a $3,000 donation from
the international commu-
nications and entertain-
ment company. Receiving
the gift on behalf of GMC
were principal Jimmy
Armstrong and Sen. Tom
Corbin (SC District 5), a
previous member of the
GMC fundraising commit-
tee.
Armstrong said the
funds will help GMC with
the cost of providing dai-
ly lunch for students who
would typically qualify for
a free or reduced-price
meal at a traditional
school.
"As a charter school, we
don't get funding for this
program like traditional
schools do,” he said. “We
cover the cost on our own
because we believe strong-
ly that students cannot
learn and achieve to their
highest potential when
they are hungry.”
Opened in 2008, GMC
is located on the Benson
Campus of Greenville
Technical College. Enroll-
ment is open to any stu-
dent in South Carolina,
with no admission test
or tuition. Students who
qualify take college class-
es for free, creating the
opportunity to earn one or
more Associate’s degrees
while still in high school.
