Calculations for no of Earthing Rods required to achieve earth resistance ,1 ohm

Applicable standard IS-3043-1987(Rev)

DATA USED
Soil resistivity (ρ) in ohm-m 2.677 Considered average re
Length of the rod (in cm)(l) 304.8
Dia.of rod (in cm)(d) 1.5875

Calculation
R=Resitense of oneEarth Rod (ohm) 100*ρ/2π*l*loge2l/d
0.1397646149
384.1209829868
loge384=2.58
0.35862

Since the resistense /rod is 0.35862 ohm,14 nos of rods are adequate enough to maintain a Earth
resistence less than ONE ohm
m

Considered average resistivity

Calculations for no of pits(Earth plate) required to achieve earth resistance ,1

Applicable standard IS-3043-1987(Rev)

DATA USED
Soil resistivity (ρ) 30 ohm-mtr
Fault current for the system(If) 50 KA
Duration of fault current(sec)(t) 1 SEC
Size of the Earth Plate (G.I.) 600X600X12 mm
Calculation
R=Resitense of theEarth plate ρ/4*√∏/A
A= Area of one plate(incl both side)in sq.mtr 0.6x0.6x2=0.72 m²
Maximum allowable current density 7.57X1000/√ρ*t
at electrode surface as per IS-3043 1382.1 A/m²

Now The total current dissipated by one 1382.1x0.72=995 Amp

earthing plate
30/4x(3.142/0.72)^0.5=15.7 ohm
Resistanse of the earth plate

No.of Earth plate= Fault 50*1000/995.112=50 Nos

current/Maxm.current dissipated

Over all resistence of one plate if 15.7/50=0.314 ohm

we use 50 plates i.e 50 pits

Toachieve 1ohm(no of pits reqd) 15.7/16=0.98 ohm

HENCE NO OF PITS REQUIRED 16 Nos
ve earth resistance ,1 ohm
