rthopedic Imaging: A Practical
Approach is now in its 6th edi-
tion. It has retained its original
focus of being a pragmatic resource for
medical students, residents, and the
practicing radiologist with an interest in
musculoskeletal imaging. The book is
equally accessible to orthopedic sur-
geons, rheumatologists, and physical
therapists.
Adam Greenspan is an internation-
ally renowned radiologist and has been
a professor of radiology for over 25
years at the University of California,
Davis, School of Medicine. He has writ-
ten and revised the last five editions
himself. However, for the 6th edition,
Javier Beltran has co-authored the
book. Dr Beltran, recent past president
of the International Skeletal Society,
brings a wealth of experience in muscu-
loskeletal magnetic resonance (MR) im-
aging. Dr Beltran is now Chairman of
Radiology at Maimonides Medical Cen-
ter in Brooklyn, New York.
The book is comprehensive and di-
vided into seven parts. It opens with a
review of the role of the orthopedic ra-
diologist and covers all current imaging
techniques. The approach is to help the
reader choose the sequence of exami-
nations, with the purpose of being both
time and cost efficient in arriving at the
correct diagnosis. The subsequent sec-
tions of the book cover trauma, arthri-
tides, tumors and tumorlike conditions,
infections, metabolic and endocrine
disorders, and congenital and develop-
mental anomalies.
There has been an extensive update
since the last edition with the increase

in the use of MR imaging in orthopedic
imaging. Updated imaging guidelines
and algorithms have been included
throughout. Reference to new tech-
niques in computed tomography, MR
imaging, and functional imaging gives a
clear direction on their role in everyday
practice.
The book is well organized, and
each chapter is logical and well struc-
tured. The book has a fully accessible
electronic version, which is great for
access away from the office. The hard-
cover book is in full color, and the print-
ing and images are of high quality. The
text is complemented well with numer-
ous images and tables. There is a handy
“Practical Points to Remember” section
at the end of each chapter that high-
lights the key concepts of the chapter.
In addition, the suggested reading rec-
ommendations have been updated to
include contemporary sources.
The book continues to achieve its
aim and is a fantastic resource both
for training and practicing radiologists
with an interest in musculoskeletal im-
aging. It is remarkable that the authors
have managed to comprehensively
cover a large subject and publish a sin-
gle volume.
