TEACHER NAME: Aaron Lam

LESSON SUBJECT: Science

LESSON TITLE: Introduction to Electromagnetic Radiation
GRADE: 8
LESSON DATE: February 26th, 2018

RATIONALE
Electromagnetic radiation (EMR) is all around us. It is present in the devices that are so
ubiquitous to us, the medical technology that we take for granted, and last but not least, the
source of life on this planet; the sun. It is important to get a basic understanding of just what
EMR is, and how it affects us, both positively and negatively.

CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS
Content: Types and effects of EMR
Curricular Competency(ies): To demonstrate a sustained intellectual curiosity about a
scientific problem or topic of personal interest. The students should also make observations
aimed at identifying their own questions about the natural world.

LEARNING INTENTIONS
I would like for the students to have a rough understanding of what EMR is. Young students can
be intimidated by terminology that seems long and complex, and it is important that they realize
that the concept of EMR isn’t as foreign as it sounds. By the end of the lesson, I want the
students to understand the relationship between light and EMR, common sources of EMR in our
world, and how their applications assist us, specifically, how they enhance how we sense the
world.
MATERIALS AND RESOURCES (REFERENCES) NEEDED FOR THIS
LESSON
Markers for the blackboard, pen and paper to write anything they want to take notes on.
Chromebooks for additional research. Any materials needed for the playing with light lab.

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION

I will be able to gauge the student’s level of understanding of EMR and its relationship with the
world by paying to their attention to the ideas that they give in class, the ideas they write on the
whiteboard, and anything else they come up with during the brainstorm. I will also be able to
evaluate and assess their lab once I have a better understanding of what it entails. There won’t
be any formal assessment (ie tests) for this class; everything will be done through informal
observation.
