1: Academic Content

1a Unit description and learning outcomes


This course will enable participants to gain a full understanding of how young learners learn foreign languages;
teaching listening, teaching speaking, teaching reading, teaching writing, teaching vocabulary, teaching
grammar; learning styles and strategies; classroom management; topic-based lesson planning; materials
evaluation and adaptation; assessment and evaluation.

On completion of the unit, students will


 have developed the special skills required to properly instruct children;
 have developed strategies for responding to different learner needs;
 have established the conditions which support young learners’ language learning- the creation of
positive teacher- young learner relationships and the effective organization of groups;
 comprehend the characteristics topic-based course syllabus;
 prepare topic-based lesson plans;
 use teaching resources effectively;
 comprehend how to assess young learners most appropriately

2: Delivery of Unit and Timetable


3a Delivery mode
On campus, following the standard semester, with weekly 1.30 to 2-hour teaching. There will also be time for
independent study.
