Why is it important?
1. Scientists still don't know why
dream activity is so critical to
healthy brains, but they do agree
that having adequate amounts of
REM is vital.
2. REM sleep is important because
it is the restorative part of our
sleep cycle.
3. During a full night of uninterrupted
sleep, our brains have an
opportunity to do some deep
cleaning to remove neurotoxins,
such as the waste products of
something called beta-amyloid,
which is found in people with
4. Alzheimer's disease.
4. People who do not get adequate
amounts of REM sleep may be at
higher risk for Alzheimer's disease
and Parkinsonism, and they are
more likely to wake up unrefreshed
and experience daytime sleepiness
5. Dreams are the ways in which
the brain processes emotions,
information, memories, and
stress. Changing your way of life
so that every night you can get
the proper sleep you need is key.
