All articles are included in this index, except for entries on papyri in Vol. IV, which are present only if
collection names in English are not identical with the German ones. Although the content of articles has
been taken into account in choosing the renderings for their titles, in principle the index consists of
translations of article titles; it is not meant as a guide to their content or to specific topics mentioned in
them, for which the subject index (VII I 09 ff.) should be consulted.
References to "Supplement" are to articles in Vol. VH.
E after an index entry indicates that the article is in English, F that it is in French; all other articles are
in German.
Arabic place name forms mostly follow the usage of J. Baines and J. Malek, Atlas of Ancient Egypt
(Oxford and New York, 1980), except that -yy- is preferred to -iy- between syllables and in termina-
tions. The Arabic article el- does not affect the alphabetization. Names beginning with Ezbet, Gebel,
Kom, etc. are indexed under those words and not under their second words.
Where appropriate, English proper name forms that differ from the German ones have been chosen,
in order to increase opportunities for locating articles.
