How to model a Front Fender in SolidWorks?
In this tutorial you will learn the following features:

 Draw a 2d sketch
 Revolved Surface
 Surface Trim
 Thicken
 Extruded Cut
 Fillet

Create a new part

Open a new part with model units set to


millimeters.

Go to: File > New > Part

Select the three planes in the feature tree and


make them visible by clicking on the glasses.

Change the names of the planes

Double click on the Front Plane in the feature tree.

Change the name into: VERTICAL PLANE FRONT FENDER

Double click on the Top Plane in the feature tree.

Change the name into: CENTERPLANE FRONT FENDER

Double click on the Right Plane in the feature tree.

Change the name into: MIDPLANE FRONT FENDER

Create a 2D sketch

Select the VERTICAL PLANE FRONT FENDER and create another


sketch by clicking on the 2D Sketch icon

Draw a 3 Point Arc

Go to Tools > Sketch Entities > 3 Point Arc or click at the


3 Point Arc icon

Select the third option in the Arc Type menu as shown in the picture

- Click to create the first endpoint


- Click again to create the second endpoint
- Click for the third time to create the radius of the arc

Make the endpoints of the arc parallel to each other

Select the first endpoint of the arc. Hold down the Control key onto your keyboard and
select the second endpoint of the spline. Select the Horizontal relation in the Add Relations
toolbar

Change the dimensions of the arc as shown in the picture by clicking at the dimension
button

Draw a horizontal centerline starting at the origin as shown in the picture

Create a Revolved Surface

Go to: Insert > Surface > Revolve or click at the Revolved Surface icon

Select the horizontal centerline as Axis of Revolution

Select the One-Direction option

Change the Angle into 360 degrees

Click OK

Create a 2D sketch

Select the MIDPLANE FRONT FENDER and create a sketch by clicking on the 2D Sketch icon

Draw the two lines as shown in the picture

Go to Tools > Sketch Entities > Line or click at the Line icon

Draw two diagonal lines starting at the origin.

Change the dimensions of the lines as shown in the picture by clicking at the dimension
button

Click at the Sketch button in the upper right corner close the 2D Sketch

Create a Surface Trim

Go to: Insert > Surface > Trim or click at the Trim icon

Select the new Sketch2 as Trim tool

Select the Keep selections option

Select the purple piece to keep

Click OK

Create a Thicken

Go to: Insert > Boss/Base > Thicken or click at the Thicken icon

Surface to thicken : Select the revolved surface

Thicken side : Thicken Side 1

Thickness : 6 mm

Click OK

Change the color of the part

Click at the Front Fender model

Click at the appearances button

Click at the Body option

Change the color into orange

Click OK

NOTE:

Because a basic knowledge of SolidWorks is required to participate the tutorials of this


tutorial package we will leave all the small steps in the 2D sketch environment away in the
future.

We do everything we can to keep the LearnSolidWorks tutorials as clear and bright as


possible. If we describe every click as above then the tutorial would be very thick and dull.
To prevent this, we’ve decided that LearnSolidWorks participants should be capable enough
to draw a simple 2d sketch with an example picture of LearnSolidWorks like the three
examples below.

If you have problems with the 2D sketch features we recommend you to practice the basics
of SolidWorks 2D sketching first.

Select the CENTERPLANE FRONT FENDER and create a new sketch

Draw a vertical construction line starting at the origin.

Draw a spline and add the dimensions.

Mirror this spline about the vertical construction line in the


middle of the sketch.

You can change the shape


of the spline by dragging at the
tangency arrow. Design a
curve you like.

Create an Extruded Cut

Go to: Insert > Cut > Extrude

Direction 1 : Trough All

Ensure that the offset is directed to the revolve.

If not, click “Reverse direction”

Click OK

Select the VERTICAL PLANE FRONT FENDER and create a new sketch

Draw a vertical construction line starting at the origin.

Draw a spline and add the dimensions.

Mirror this spline about the vertical construction line in the middle of the sketch.

Create an Extruded Cut

Go to: Insert > Cut > Extrude

Direction 1 : Trough All

Ensure that the offset is directed to the revolve.

If not, click “Reverse direction”

Click OK

Create a Surface Fillet

Go to: Insert > Features > Fillet/Round or click at the Fillet icon

Click at the green surface as shown in the picture

Change the Radius into 6 mm

Click OK

Hide all planes and sketches except:

- VERTICAL PLANE FRONT FENDER


- MIDPLANE FRONT FENDER
- CENTERPLANE FRONT FENDER

Save the Front_Fender.SLDPRT file

Congratulations, you just finished your own Front Fender!
