Community Programming

Principles

An exciting lecture on why we

program, what the principles are,
our programming requirements,
advertising, and incentives.

The Community
Coordinator
• Who I am: Brandon Smith. Senior.
Communications/Journalism. RA for 2-1/2 years in McLean.
• What did I do: I worked with RDs all summer to plan RA
training. I mainly worked on the resource room with
Christian Barber. It has a few upgrades. The computers are
new, still Windows XP, but new. It is painted, we got new
supplies: a cool machine that prints out door decs for you,
we got more cut-outs, new letters, adult scissors, real
Crayola Markers, yardsticks, rulers, more rolls of colored
paper, printer ink, internet access, sharpies… and sofas. :)
Christian and I have tried to convert the “Resource Room”
into an RA Lounge. We’re still working on the vending
machine and a snack bar…
• What I do: coordinate community.
I am here to help you. I will help you with
programs, coach you in programming, stock
the resource room, and will meet with the
RDs and Barry every week. I will have office
hours because I live off campus, and I have a
separate email address. I also will be sitting in
on staff meetings to throw around some
ideas. I will send out monthly newsletters,
monthly campus programming calendars, and
having a few programs/activities of my own!
I will be sending out monthly newsletters
to keep everyone informed on what’s
going on with Res Life.

Why do we program?
NEW community principles

Forget what you thought you knew

(“JaQuan’s Community Principles”)
Citizenship
This programming function focuses on being an
informed, productive and engaged member of the
[global, national, local] community. Programs such as
community service initiatives or voter registration
drives can fall under this category.
This programming focuses on fostering an
appreciation of differences. While racial and
cultural diversity are important aspects of our
society, other topics include sexual identity,
class, and political differences.

Diversity
Intellectual Growth

A focus on students' academic and

intellectual success by showing that
learning occurs in all aspects of
campus life.
Social
A focus on the need for
human interaction.
Birthdays, holiday parties,
poker nights, movies, etc.
Wellness
A focus on the student mind, body,
and soul by educating them on how
to live healthy lifestyles.
Topics cover eating habits, exercise,
and stress management.

chance to win a Ship hoodie
• The points must be turned in
on time
• Each point turned in that
month will get the RA one
additional chance to win - no
limit. :)
• For this raffle, the points for
entry will only be usable for
that specific month, so they
don’t compound month-to-
month
Community Brix
Bricks have generally been overlooked for the
past few years, but I’m bringing them back.

You earn a brick when you get 10 community

points, win “Program of the Month” or “Bulletin
Board of the Month”

In the fall, they can get you into a dinner, and in

the spring, can translate into RA Bux. I will try
to keep Brix handed out monthly!
Secrets
of
Compounding Points
After the FIRST TWO WEEKS of
school, every RA should have at
least 16 points from wing
meetings alone. This does not
include every event you will walk
residents to that you are
required to attend (like the main
speaker on drugs and alcohol),
which can add up to
between 25-30 points.
points
Extra Points this Week
• Thurs - Main Speaker (3) and Evening
Social (3)
• Friday - Home Away from Home (3),
Funnest Night Ever (3)
• Sat - Human Scrabble (3), Midnight
Bingo (3)
• Sunday - Activities/Involvement Fair (2)
Required Points this Week
• Developmental Interviews (2)
• Community Living Agreement (3)
• Roommate Agreements (3)
• Interest Surveys and Goals (2)
• Human Understanding Pledge (2)
• Bulletin Boards (2pts ea)
• Door Decorations (1 point)
• Community Goal Sheet (2)
If you attend the previously listed
activities (16 points total) and complete
the required meetings/decorations/etc
(17 points total), that gives you 33
points with only 17 more to meet your
base requirement.

…but that’s not all…

If you take those 33 points from
the first two weeks, and add in
the 5 points each you’ll get from
the required Cultural Connections
and Weekend Programs, you’ll have
about 43 points total, leaving
you with only 7 points for the
rest of the semester.

IT’S THAT EASY

Also, if you take a simple program, such as
seeing a movie, you can get points for…
1 having a program on a weekend
3 going off-campus
1 use the Raider bus/RHA van to get there
=5 points for the whole program!

5 Have faculty member speak to residents

1 On a weekend
3 Then take them off-campus for ice cream
=9 points

**However, I am NOT saying that after you complete your 50 points for the
semester, you just STOP. There are some NEW incentives to running up
more points which we will speak of later…
How will points be turned in?
~Top Half~
~Bottom Half~
• Each individual RD will discuss with
their staffs how to turn in points and
evaluate points
• The point of these programming sheets
is to be setting yourself goals and
evaluating the quality and substance of
each program and activity you execute
(Hand out papers now. Thanks Christian.)
What makes for good advertisement?
THE BASICS:
Who
What
When
Where

Make it eye-catching!
1. Make it something you want to look at it.
2. The colors can’t clash.
3. Make sure colors don’t blend too well
1. Attention - the big words need to
grab attention

2. Pretty pictures

3. Location

4. Time

5. Date
The
Appropriate

Inappropriate
Idea:
A Brief
Session on
Innuendo in
Effective
Advertising
• The wonderful use of innuendo is a
beautiful tool when advertising to people
of all ages, not just college students.

• Anything that hints at something

inappropriate, but isn’t explicitly so, has
great potential to catch attention. Just
be creative!
1. Attention

2. Location

3. Time

4. Date
• You CAN keep it simple.

• However, catchier and creative ads

will draw more people. Just be careful
as to how much time you put into a
project.

• Sample ads of mine both complex and

simple…
Important Reminders
• Your RD must approve in-building ads
• Go to the CUB info desk to get campus-
wide ads approved and stamped
• Be sure your publicity does not have
any inappropriate use of the Ship ship
logo
• Clean up your ads after program is
finished.
Things we CAN’T do…
1. Advertise with the name of the movie
i.e. “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi”

You must be creative and say different

things like…
“In carbonite Han was encased
To travel to Tatooine space
And all through the while
He wished he had smiled
Not frozen with this open-mouthed face!”
