BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Hospital waste management has become a critical issue as it poses potential health risks and damage to
the environment. Our topic is based on figuring out Proper Waste Management in Hospitals. The topic
chosen for this research came first of all from our own involvement with Bataan General Hospital (BGH).
The present research was conducted to investigate the health implications of hospital waste
management practices in Bataan General Hospital. Since, Bataan General Hospital (BGH) is one of the
famous health care facilities in Bataan many of us has an experience in this hospital. We all agreed that
BGH offers the cheapest health care but regards to that we find BGH as a clean and well-organized
hospitals as they manage to adopt the Waste Management that has been currently implemented in the
Province of Bataan. Through our experience by visiting with some of our friends and relatives confined
in BGH we have noticed that BGH waste is segregated through trash bins. However, it is only a glance of
experience to us to be in Bataan General Hospital that's why we consider our curiosity to think
furthermore.

Waste created in hospitals is large in quantities. When a person goes to the hospital to get a blood test,
that itself creates waste from the needle, its packaging, tape and possible disinfection items. When
thinking about hospital waste, it is not only your everyday waste but the special and hazardous waste,
which causes a risk throughout the waste management process. That's why our objective is to find out
what is meant by waste management in hospitals, and how it affects hospitals and their customers.
What can be done to make hospital waste management more efficient? The main objective for this
research is to give some insight on what is going on in the hospitals from waste logistic side, and how
the process works.

The study aims to provide information about the management, segregation, storage and disposal of
medical wastes in Bataan General Hospital. We believe, Hospitals have the responsibility of ensuring
that there are no adverse health and environmental consequences on their handling, storage, treatment
and disposal of health care waste. Apart from the risk to the patient and health care personnel,
consideration must be given to the impact of health care waste to the general public. We knew that
Bataeños are aware of segregating waste, but unfortunately many of us are irresponsible to deal with all
the orders implemented. In BGH, there are lots of trash bins and posters on what can and can't be
thrown to the bins but when you look on the bins the waste are not segregated properly. Sometimes the
problems itself is living within us, the wrong traits can also cause of improper waste management.

We expect as a group to give more awareness to people and to take a point concerning an
improvements towards the proper waste management in Bataan General Hospital. The essence of this
research is that there is a serious concern regarding hospital waste which has not been adequately
managed and that is the most significant involvement for us to show that Hospital only provide essential
prevention, treatment and care services to improve health and quality of life not to take our health on
risk.
