LABORATORY FURNITURE
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01 DESCRIPTION:
(NTS: Select and list specification sections for inserting into this subsection based on the
following:

2. Submit color samples of cabinet metalwork finishes, work top material, and
samples of hardware and upholstery.
3. In accordance with the procedures and requirements set forth in the General
Conditions and in applicable provisions of Division 1, the Contractor shall obtain
from the equipment and materials manufacturer and shall submit the following:
a. Working Drawings.
f. Sample pieces of the bench mounted hood exterior wall material, interior linear
and baffle material, epoxy work surface material and front panel color selection
chips shall be provided by hood manufacturer for approval by the CM/CS.

1. Assume responsibility for equipment, material and spare parts just before unloading
from carrier at site.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01 MANUFACTURERS:
A. Prime-grade, stretcher and roller-leveled, cold-rolled steel, free from scratches, rust,
scale, ragged edges, and other injurious imperfections. 18-gage metal except as follows:
Corner gussets for leveling bolts and apron corner braces, 12 gage; case and drawer
support channels, 14 gage; horizontal rails, table aprons and reinforcing gussets, 16 gage;
drawer assembly, door assembly and adjustable shelves, 20 gage. U.S. Standard gages.
B. After welding furniture units and before finishing, apply prepaint phosphate treatment
then corrosion-resistant synthetic-resin baked-on primer. Apply finish coat of specially
formulated, high-bake, synthetic resin over primed surface. Color of finish selected by
CM/CS from manufacturer's standard colors.
C. Drawer and Door Pulls: Die-cast alloy with satin chrome finish or extruded anodized
aluminum with satin finish coated with clear lacquer. Attach drawers and doors with
machine screws. Two pulls on drawers wider than 28 in.(710 mm) Each door hung on
one pair of 2-1/2-in.(65 mm) high hinges attached to door and unit with two screws
through leaf. Institutional type steel hinges with satin chrome, baked-on acid, alkali and
solvent resistant finish with five knuckle, bullet-type barrel. Door furnished with roll
point, spring action catches of cadmium-plated steel.
D. Unit With Toe Spaces: Provide with 4-in.(100 mm) high cove bases of black, chemical
rubber material.
A. 15-1/4-inch long x 24-inch wide x 41-inch high, (390 mm long x 610 mm wide x 1050
mm high) bench mounted, portable, which produces distilled water with PH of 5.4 to 7.2.
Includes low water cutoff, Q-baffle for pyrogen-free water and unit has double walled
evaporator with removable cover. External constant-level device included along with
immersion heater and inclined condenser and drain valve. All surfaces in contact with
pure water are coated with pure tin. C220V, 50 Hz, single phase, 6000 W, 16 amps. Still
will use a tap water feed for connection to plumbing fixtures.
A. End Uprights: Formed in channel shape at top, bottom, back, and front with front edge
further offset to form strike for doors and drawers. Screw upright filler in place in all
cupboard units to provide smooth interior and to provide support for shelves with
perforated holes having 1-1/16-in.(27 mm) centers. Reinforce front of end uprights with
full length 14-gage hinge reinforcement angle.
B. Horizontal Rails: At top of base units and between drawer and cupboard section. Unit
bottom and bottom rail from one piece of metal with flanges formed up at back and down
at side, and offset to provide door strike at front edge. Toe space rail for each unit
extending up and forward to engage bottom rail forming 3-in. by 5-in.(75 mm by 125
mm) toe space.
C. Back of Units: Consist of top and bottom rail channel welded to back flange of end
uprights. Removable full-height back for all cupboard units. Die-formed gussets in each
bottom corner with leveling bolts.
D. Shelves: Cupboard units with full width adjustable steel formed shelves, no sharp edges.
42-in.(1050 mm) long shelves.
F. Doors: Inner and outer metal pans forming a 3/4-in.( 18 mm) thick assembly with sound
deadening in space between pans. Prepare reinforced doors for hinges and pulls. Each
door with at least two rubber bumpers.
B. Case Construction:
1. Joints are multiple doweled, glued and screwed. Full frame top and solid ¾”(18
mm) seven-ply hardwood plywood bottom for case rigidity A 4” high toe space is
totally enclosed, bottom of case to include hardware facing on front bottom edge.
C. End Panel:
1. End panels are ¾” (18 mm) seven-ply hardwood plywood with front exposed edges
faced with solid hardwood edging.
1. ¾” (18 mm) seven-ply hardwood plywood shelves with hardwood facing on front
edge. Fully adjustable on 32 mm centers secured with corrosion-resistant clips to
prevent accidental shelf movement.
1. Clear interior sealers resist acids and scratches. Surfaces are finished with a
chemical resistant synthetic varnish system which resists heat, moisture and impact.
F. Drawer Suspension:
1. Epoxy-coated, self-closing drawer slides with nylon rollers and two stage positive
stops.
G. Door Hinges:
1. Institutional-type five knuckle offset stainless steel door hinges rated for 150-lb.(68
kg) load. Full swing opening feature.
H. Doors:
1. 1-in.(25 mm) thick door with oak veneer face, oak banded core and stainless steel
wire pull.
A. Construction: Formed end uprights having front edge offset to form strike for sliding
doors. Back side of uprights perforated to provide holes for shelf adjustment.
1. One piece with channel shape at front and formed down over door track. One piece
unit bottom with bottom rail formed to provide guide for sliding doors. Flush soffit
plate attached to unit bottom. Each case provided with two full width adjustable
shelves.
(NTS: Select appropriate type of sliding doors from following two paragraphs.)
2. 1/4-in.( 6 mm) thick plate glass double sliding glass doors guided at top and bottom
in continuous plastic track. Bottom edge of glass ground and polished, and vertical
edges covered by plastic channel. Doors provided with ground-in finger pulls and
close against rubber bumpers mounted in case sides.
A. Glass Doors:
1. Sliding plate glass doors mounted on friction free nylon roller guides. Doors are
suspended by rollers from an aluminum track at the top for ease of movement.
B. End Panels:
1. End panels are ¾”(18 mm) seven-ply hardwood plywood with front exposed edges
forced with solid hardwood edging.
1. One adjustable shelf consisting of ¾-in (18 mm) seven-ply hardwood plywood with
hardwood facing on front edge.
1. Constructed of ¾-in (18 mm) seven-ply hardwood plywood with exposed edges
faced with solid hardware edging.
E. Case Construction:
1. Clear interior sealers resist acids and scratches. Surfaces are finished with a
chemical/resistant synthetic varnish system which resists heat, moisture and impact.
A. Laboratory work tops, backsplashes and box curbs, molded from 1-1/4-in.(32 mm) thick
thermosetting, homogeneous, modified epoxy resin material. The color of the material
shall be black.
B. 1/4-in. wide by 3/16-in.(8 mm x 5 mm) deep drip grooved along underside of exposed
edges. Exposed sides with radius along top edge and radius at exposed corners.
D. Indented with front top edge and exposed ends raised to form drip guard completely
around working surface or level surface with drip groove on underside of all exposed
edges.
E. Rear curbs, forming backsplashes and bases for box curbs, coved and molded in one
piece with tops and exposed edges with radius.
2.09 SINKS:
A. Black sinks made from modified epoxy resin and molded in one piece, with bottom
pitched to drain and inside corners coved.
(NTS: Sinks and cup sinks are normally provided with types of faucets and traps
hereinafter specified. Other types specified as required. With exception of distilled water
faucets, all faucets with vacuum breakers. Select from following paragraphs.)
B. Provide with deck-mounted, hot and cold water gooseneck faucets with 8-in.(200 mm)
spread, vacuum breaker, removable straight serrated hose connector, disk type valves,
and 1/2-in.( 15 mm) IPS female thread inlets 8-in.(200 mm) on centers.
C. Provide with deck-mounted distilled water gooseneck faucets with 8-in.(200 mm) spread,
tin lined interior, straight serrated hose connector, and self-closing handle. Faucet body
with integral 3/4-in.(20 mm) diameter tailpiece, sealing ring, locknut, washer, and 1/4-
in.(8 mm) IPS union tailpiece.
D. Provide with polyethylene traps and sink outlets clean-out riser removable strainer and
locknut. Sink outlet with 1-1/2-in.( 40 mm) IPS male straight threads and trap with 1-1/2-
B. Provide with deck mounted cold water gooseneck faucets with 6-in. spread, vacuum
breaker, and removable straight serrated hose connector. Faucet body complete with
integral 3/4-in. (20 mm)diameter tail-piece, sealing ring, locknut, washer, and 1/4-in. IPS
(8 mm) union tailpiece.
C. Provide with deck mounted distilled water gooseneck faucets with 6-in. spread, tin-lined
interior, straight serrated hose connector and self-closing handle. Faucet body complete
with integral 3/4-in.(20 mm) diameter tailpiece, sealing ring, locknut, washer, and 1/4-
in.(8 mm) IPS union tailpiece.
(NTS: For most labs use following two types of electrical service fixtures. If other types
are required, specify accordingly. Quantity, location and voltage of electrical outlets as
indicated.)
A. Electrical Outlets: Single gage, 3-wire, polarized duplex receptacles with flush plates for
curb or panel mounting.
B. Electrical Outlets: Double-faced pedestal type for deck mounting with single-gang
duplex, 3-wire, polarized, grounded receptacles.
(NTS: Use following two types of fixtures for air, gas, and vacuum for most labs. If other
types are required, specify accordingly. Quantity, location and kind of service as
indicated.)
C. Fixtures for curb or panel-mounted air, gas, and vacuum service consist of flanges and
single ground key valve hose cocks. Inlet with 3/8-in.(10 mm) IPS female threads.
Service required for each fitting as indicated by colored lettered button on valve handle.
D. Fixtures for deck-mounted air, gas, and vacuum service consist of single outlet turrets
and ground key valve hose cocks. Inlet with 3/8-in. (10 mm) IPS female threads. Kind of
service for each fitting as indicated by colored, lettered button on valve handle.
(NTS: Following is specification for fume hood and accessories for use in air-conditioned
labs. Make revisions to suit particular requirements of each project.)
A. Auxiliary-air type with separate duct and blower system capable of supplying up to 70
percent of exhausted air from outside source.
B. Assembly consists of superstructure with strut supports for rear overhang, auxiliary air
chamber, and cabinet under-structure with doors. Super-structure exterior and cabinet
fabricated of cold-rolled steel, phosphate coated and finished with baked chemical
resistant, synthetic resin in color to match or harmonize with laboratory furniture.
C. Superstructure with 1/4-in.(20 mm) thick lining of modified epoxy resin or transite, and
removable baffle with adjustable top and bottom exhaust slots. Modified epoxy resin
working surface 1-1/4-in.(32 mm) thick, dished 1/2-in.(15 mm) to retain spillage, and
fitted with 6-in. by 3-in. (150 mm by 7 mm) oval cup sink with polyethylene trap.
D. Vertical sliding sash suspended on stainless steel cables operating on ball bearing sheaves
and counter-balanced by weights and sash cable system to prevent tilting of sash during
operation. Sash frame provided with plastic guides operating in stainless steel sash
guides to insure proper operation and prevent metal-to-metal contact. Sash with 1/4-in.(6
mm) thick combination safety glass sealed into a cold-rolled steel frame with chemical
rubber or vinyl channels. Internal glass retaining strips, rigid vinyl extrusions or stainless
steel strips.
E. Two-tube fluorescent light fixture shielded from hood interior by tempered glass panel
sealed into hood body by extruded vinyl channel, or incandescent, vaportight,
explosionproof light fixture, including wiring to switch.
F. Furnished with following service accessories: Eight remote controlled service fixtures,
two each for air, gas, vacuum and cold water (one water control to include a 6-in. (150
mm) spread gooseneck faucet for the cup sink); six 220 volt electrical outlets; one toggle
switch for hood light; one toggle switch with warning light for blowers.
B. Free standing, open-leg table consisting of steel apron rail assembly with drawer, and
four square steel tubing legs with three steel channel shaped spreaders. Legs with
adjustable rubber vibration pads set into tops to support work top and leveling bolts and
leg shoes at bottoms. Black top 1-1/4-in.(32 mm) thick natural stone, free of veins or
seams, lamin-ations and stratification, impregnated with highly chemical and heat
resistant resin, high temperature cured and polymerized by baking. Apron rail, assembly
legs, and spreaders finished with baked chemical resistant, synthetic resin in color to
match laboratory furniture.
2.15 PEGBOARDS:
A. Made of inorganic mixture of synthetic calcium silicate binders reinforced with mineral
fibers and other inorganic pigments and fillers, formed under high pressure into
chemically resistant monolithic sheet, or made of polypropylene or carbonized birch.
Pegboards at least 3/4-in.(20 mm) and not more than 1-1/4-in (125 mm) thick and 1/2-
in.(15 mm) diameter, black polypropylene, polyethylene, or carbonized birch pegs, set at
angle and staggered on 3-in (75 mm) centers.
A. 1-1/2-in. ( 40 mm) thick by 12-in.(300 mm) wide carbonized birch of lengths indicated.
Shelves supported on wall mount enameled steel shelf brackets.
A. Carbonized birch, 1-1/4-in.( 125 mm) thick by 4 in.( 100 mm) wide by length as
indicated. Carbonized 1/2-in.( 15 mm) diameter hardwood pegs inserted into hook strip
at angle on 6-in. ( 150 mm) centers. Hook strip securely fastened to wall.
B. Double pedestal desk of all-steel construction with 1-1/2-in. ( 40 mm) thick top made of
inorganic mixture of synthetic calcium silicate binders reinforced with mineral fibers and
other inorganic pigments and fillers, formed under high pressure into chemically resistant
monolithic sheet. Two stock sitting height laboratory base cabinets as pedestals with
each having pull-out writing shelf, card file drawer, storage drawer, and file drawer.
Base cabinets with coved chemical rubber bases. Desk with center drawer above knee
A. Fixed back, swivel arm chair with steel frame and cast aluminum base. Frame with
baked enamel finish, and base with anodized satin finish. Foamed rubber seat cushion
and backrest or urethane and arm rests molded plastic. Upholstered seat with woven
black fabric, and back with black expanded vinyl. Chair by Fisher No. 91-225; Duralab
No. C8F-SCB; Style No. 1800-A manufactured by Harter Corporation, Sturgis, MI; or
acceptable equivalent product.
A. Bases constructed of 14 gage steel tubing with minimum 22-in.(560 mm) leg spread, steel
leg glides, and a 16-in. (400 mm) diameter ring footrest. 13-in.( 330 mm) diameter
revolving steel seat with formed flange and up-holstered seat pad. Adjustable height
from approximately 22-in. (560 mm) to 30-in.(9200 mm) above floor. Baked enamel
finish in one of standard colors of manufacturer. Kewaunee Model RSS, Fisher No. 91-
250, Duralab RSS-22-U, or an acceptable equivalent product.
A. Acid neutralizing tanks, materials, and installation are not included in this specification
and shall be provided under Specification 15410.
A. Emergency shower and eyewash materials and installation are not included in this
Specification and shall be provided under Specification 15410.
A. Cabinets shall be made of 18 gauge cold-rolled steel and coated with an electrostatic dry
powder epoxy method for maximum laboratory chemical resistance. Metal shall be
properly cleaned and prepared with a phosphate rust inhibiting primer. Epoxy coating
color shall match the hood color “glacier white”. Cabinets shall be double wall design
with 1/-1/2 inch (40 mm) inter wall space. There shall be a bi-folding assembly of
double wall construction. There shall be a 2-inch (50 mm) deep bottom sump to contain
spills.
B. Doors shall include a lockable rotating three fastening door handle. Cabinets shall have a
full width adjustable shelf and an 8-inch ( 200 mm) rear filler panel. An identification
labelling clearly visible will be a fixed to cabinets which reads: SOLVENT SOTRAGE
FLAMMABLE/KEEP FIRE AWAY. The label shall be in Arabic and English.
D. The acid storage cabinets store and vent acids and other highly corrosive liquid.
2.24 LABWASHER:
A. 23½-in. x 23½-in. x 32½-in. ( 600 mm x 600 mm x 825 mm) front loading washer with
heavy duty pump to circulate water through spray arms. Include easy-to-use program
with colored indicator lights for selector and monitoring wash cycle and sanitizing hot
water temperature up to 75 deg. C. Washer shall include inter-changeable baskets, inserts
and injector units. Dryer cycle shall be approximately 10 minutes. Circulating pump
capacity shall be 104 gallons/minute ( 0.39 m3/min) with water consumption of 2.6 (0.35
m3) gallons per cycle and turnover. Rate shall be 40 times per minute. Exterior sides
shall be scratch proof white plastic over stainless steel and the door shall be brushed
stainless steel.
A. Provide an all metal frame for the fire protection plan supplied under Division 16. The
frame shall include the following:
2. Frame profile to be minimum depth ½-inch ( 15 mm) and minimum width ¾-inch
(20 mm).
5. Non-glare glass.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 INSTALLATION:
A. Install in accordance with instructions of manufacturer. Level units and adjust doors and
drawers to operate smoothly and close tightly.
