Assignment Week 4

Geochemistry
Due Date: Week 6
Lecturer: Dyah Nindita Sahdarani, S.Si, M.Energy
Format: A4 paper

Rate of reaction #1 (20 points)

For reaction:
𝑁𝑂# + 𝑂% → 𝑁𝑂% + 𝑂#
The rate constant k= exp (18.10 – 2450/T) L/mol s, where T is between 230 and 360 K.
Calculate k at 25ºC!

Rate of reaction #2 (20 points)

Oxidation of methane in the atmosphere occurs through a number of mechanism, including
reaction with hydroxyl radical:
𝑂𝐻 + 𝐶𝐻) ⇌ 𝐻#𝑂 + 𝐶𝐻%
The rate of reaction for series of temperatures is shown on the table below. Calculate the
activation energy and frequency factor (pre-exponential factor).

T, (ºC) k
25 6.6 x 10-15
10 4.76 x 10-15
0 3.76 x 10-15
-10 2.93 x 10-15
-25 1.93 x 10-15

Activation Energy (20 points)

The rate of room-temperature reactions approximately DOUBLES when the temperature is
increased by 10ºC. Calculate the activation energy for reaction that exactly shows this
relationship. (R = 8.314 J /K mol)

Viscosity (20 points)

Use the viscosity measurements given below to verify that the Arrhenius equation is
applicable to the flow of a silicate melt. Calculate the activation energy!
(Hint: viscosity is the resistance to flow, where flow rate is inversely proportional).

T, (ºC) Viscosity of rhyolite melt (N s / m2)

1325 2042
1345 1585
1374 1097
1405 741

Diffusion (20 points)

Show that diffusion coefficient (D) are m2s-1 when concentration (ci) is expressed in mol m-3
ad the net flux (fi) is in mol m-2 s-1.
