shot.

AUSTRALIA
Australia is a land of the unexpected- of vast size, amazing natural wealth, awesome scenery
and exotic plant and animal life. There is the availability of an enormous variety of aboriginal
art in the country- right from traditional paintings, modern screen prints, jewellery
and carvings, to boomerangs, didgeridoos, weapons, ceramics, and recordings of traditional
music.
Studying in Australia offers international students more than academic achievement and a
globally recognised qualification. It is an once-in-a-lifetime experience through which a
student can develop independence, maturity, an understanding of other cultures, and the
ability to see issues from different perspectives. Australian Universities prepare a student to
work in today’s global marketplace. This is why several foreign companies recruit directly
from Australian universities and vocational institutes
Details of entry requirements
• IELTS (preferred) / TOEFL iBT scores (80-108)

• You need to have a good standard of English language and academic qualifications for the
intended course.
• Academic entry qualifications are determined by the individual institutions.
• It is essential that students provide a certified transcript of studies taken, including results.
• The average annual fees and living costs range between US$18,000- US$50,000
• Students are permitted to work 20 hours a week off campus.
• Students will be given the option of permanent residence in Australia after studying there
for a minimum of two years.
Commencement of semester/s: The university year in Australia usually comprises two

semesters that start either in late February or early March and end early December, with a mid-
year student intake in July for certain programmes. Some universities follow a trimester
system, wherein courses commence in January, May and September.
When to apply: Six to eight months prior to the commencement of the courses
Processing time: For UG courses, it’s four weeks.
How to apply and whom to address: Complete the International Student Application form
(download from the university web site), attach certified copies of your school / university
transcripts, the international English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores and send them
to the International Education or the IDP Education Australia office (Website:
www.idp.com). You can send the application directly to the universities also.
Deadlines: Though universities have their own deadlines, they usually end three months
before the commencement of the session. Some Universities accept late applications subject to
the availability of seats.
Application docket: Your application docket should contain your resume, Statement of
Purpose (SoP), mark sheets and certificates, transcripts, letters of recommendation, IELTS
scores, work experience letters, photocopy of your passport and photographs.

Tuition scholarships: There are around 300 scholarships, granted on the basis of merit, to
academically strong candidates. Apart from the Australian government, the Australian Agency
for International Development funds the Australian Development Scholarships for students
from developing countries. The Australian Department of Education, Training and Youth
Affairs (DETYA) also offers scholarships, besides the IPRS and the IDP Peace Scholarships
available to Indian students.

GERMANY
As Western Europe's richest and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the
continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. Germany has one of the world's
most technologically advanced telecommunications systems. Germany is known for its
engineering studies.
For the international student an important feature of most German universities is that
they do not charge tuition fees. University education in Germany is federally funded
Admission procedure: There are two ways by which admission to German universities can be
sought :
• Direct application to the university of your choice

• Application routed through the consortium known as ASSIST (www.uniassist.de) for
universities which are members of ASSIST. There are currently around 60 member
Universities. Please note that ASSIST member universities will accept applications
only if they are sent via ASSIST. Direct applications will not be entertained.
Commencement of semester/s
Summer Semester: April (minor intake, only for limited subjects/universities)
Winter Semester: October (major intake, for all subjects/universities)
When to start applying: As per universities application deadline.
Important deadlines for accepting applications: For Indian students, who mostly wish to
pursue one of the International Degree Programmes (courses conducted in the English
medium), application deadlines are around March of the year in which admissions sought. You
should, however, check the exact dates with the university you are applying to.
Tentative month to know result: Results are usually known by June or July.
Application docket: Students are required to submit the university application form duly
filled up along with authenticated copies of their education and work experience certificates
(as may be required). Applications routed through ASSIST will have to be sent to the ASSIST
office in Germany along with a proof of payment of the ASSIST application-processing fee.
Academic background: German universities have a very high academic standard. Thus,
students who wish to study in Germany also have to have a strong and impressive educational
track record. A student’s academic background should be related to the field of study he
wishes to pursue in Germany.
Recommendation letters: Some universities may ask for recommendation letters. These
should be genuine and expressive in nature. A mere “he was a good student …” will not get
you very far.

Statement of Purpose/College Essay/ Professional Interest essay: This could be required by
some universities.
Extra curricular activities: There is no harm in sending this type of information – however,
you need not if you wish.
Standardized tests: SAT is required for UG Programmes, TOEFL or IELTS scores are also
mandatory, Universities offering PG programmes in Engineering may ask for a GRE score and
those offering MBAs may want a GMAT score. Since the medium of instruction in most
German institutions is English, proficiency in German language is not a necessary criterion for
admission decisions to be made. However, a student is expected to show his proficiency in the
German language for better living. It is imperative that students have at least a basic
knowledge of German.
Cost factor: Living expenses may range between 300 and 600 Euro a month depending on the
university’s location. Metros are more expensive than smaller towns.
Course fee: Germany’s state funded universities do not charge any tuition fees as they are
borne by the German taxpayer. A recent ruling passed in the German Supreme Court, says that
individual State Governments are free to decide whether or not they want to introduce tuition
fees. The Federal States are at present extremely undecided on this issue.
Cost of living on – campus, off-campus: There is not much difference in the cost of living on
or off campus.
Tuition scholarships, fee waivers: Universities have very limited scholarships, which are
offered only to the most brilliant and outstanding students. Other funding organizations like
the DAAD may have something to offer, but their funding possibilities are meant mostly for
Ph.D. and post – doctoral studies.
Transferring money, opening an account: International banks would be in a position to offer

these services.
Permitted working hours for extra income: Students are allowed to work off campus for
maximum of 180 half days (four hours of work per day) without obtaining any special permit.
There is no restriction on the number of hours for on campus jobs, which are in some way or
the other related to a student’s programme of study.
Student visa: Students who are successful and obtain an admission letter from a German
university have to approach the German Embassy or German Consulate, in their vicinity,
along with two complete sets of application papers, the application fee (which is at present
INR 1,100), the letter of admission from the German university, all their original certificates, a
financial proof / statement (which is currently INR 3,50,000), and health certificate. All
students are called for an interview, it takes up to eight weeks to process a visa application,
and results of the application are known only after two months. If a visa is granted, it is
initially valid only for three months. On arrival in Germany, the students will have to visit the
Foreigners Registration Office in the city where the university is located and get the visa
extended for the duration of the study programme.
Future prospects: The new German Immigration Law that came into force on January 1,
2005 has to a great extent cut down on the red tape, and made Germany more attractive both as

a place to study as well as a place to work. Students will now be permitted to stay in Germany
for up to 12 months after the completion of their degree to search for suitable employment.

Studying in India in one of the renowned campuses is not only cost effective but a rewarding
educational experience where you get quality academic inputs along with opportunities for all–
round development. It is important to keep the following points in mind while applying for
graduate courses in India:
• The courses you apply for must be recognised by the appropriate authority e.g., the degree
courses by the University Grant Commission (UGC), professional / technical courses
by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), medical courses by the
Medical Council of India (MCI), dental courses by the Dental Council of India (DCI),
law courses by the Bar Council of India (BCI) and so on. This is essential because most
postgraduate programmes require that you should a graduate from a “recognised”

Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA)
The Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) of India has introduced fifteen
percent supernumerary seats in Technical and Higher Educational Institutions in India,
exclusively for admission of Foreign Nationals and Persons of Indian Origin.
Ed.CIL has been authorised by MHRD for placement of foreign students in Indian Institutions
for higher studies and is the "Single Window Coordinating Agency" for the placement of
foreign students to all National Institutes of technology (Formerly Regional Engineering
Colleges) and other centrally funded institutions covered under Direct Admission of Students
Abroad (DASA) scheme.
The criteria for admission to premier Technical Institutions covered under DASA
Scheme now require only sixty percent aggregate marks in all the subjects of qualifying
examination equivalent to Senior Secondary Examination in India and annual tuition fee is
only US$4000. The admission to courses in various other institutions is offered by Ed.CIL at a
fee ranging between US$1000-4000 per annum.

technology, Bio-informatics, Medical, Dental, Nursing, Pharmacy, Paramedical, Agriculture/
Veterinary Sciences, Dairy Technology, Fisheries, Arts & Fine Arts, Humanities, Social
Sciences, Commerce, Science, Management, Hotel Management & Catering Technology,
Travel & Tourism, Fashion Design & Technology. India offers quality education of
international standards in programmes leading to Diploma and Graduate, Postgraduate and
Doctoral levels.

COMPANY SECRETARY
Company Secretaries have been recognised by various enactments as one of the principal
officers of Companies. They act as legal representatives of companies. The knowledge and
training acquired by them make them versatile enough to carry out various functions in the
fields of Finance, Accounts, Legal Administration and Personnel, in addition to their own
responsibilities. Companies having a paid-up share capital of Rs. 2 crore or more are
statutorily required to appoint a full time company secretary (Section 383 - A of the
Company’s Act, 1956) who must be a member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India
(ICSI), a professional body constituted under the Company Secretaries Act, 1980. Moreover,
the enactment of the Companies Amendment Act 2000 makes it mandatory for companies

JAPAN

International students can enroll in one of five types of institutions of higher learning:
universities (undergraduate courses), graduate schools, junior colleges, special training

universities in Japan, including national, public and private ones. The length of study in an
undergraduate university is four years with the exception of medicine, dentistry and veterinary
science department, which require six years of study.
Eligibility for Undergraduate level studies: A student who has completed his or her
secondary education (include high school) and school education for 12 years or more outside
of Japan will qualify for admission to a Japanese university. Those who have qualifications
such as an International Baccalaureate or Abitur and are aged at least 18 years are also
qualified for admission to a Japanese university
Eligibility for Graduate level studies: A student who has completed prescribed courses at an
institute of higher education outside of Japan will qualify for admission to a Japanese graduate
school if the student has completed 16 years of school education (18 years for those enrolling
in doctor's programs in medicine, dentistry or veterinary science).
Academic Year: The academic year at a Japanese school normally begins in April and ends
the following March. Some classes are run year-round, but classes are usually divided into
semesters, lasting through the first semester (April - September) or the second semester
(October - March). Students normally enroll in April, but some universities permit students to
enter at a different time, such as in October.

MALAYSIA
Malaysia is fast emerging as an educational destination of international quality, a major force

NEW ZEALAND

• English Language Ability. The universities in New Zealand have specified minimum
levels of competence (eg. 6.0 in IELTS or 550 in TOEFL for most undergraduate degrees)
• Applications for admission to universities should include certified copies of the highest
secondary school certificates received (e.g. GCE 'A' levels, STPM, IB) and official
academic records of any tertiary study undertaken (e.g. university, polytechnic, technical
college). The basic level of admission is the same across the New Zealand university
system. However, individual universities may require higher standards for admission to

No scholarships are available. All courses for overseas students are on a full fee paying basis.

RUSSIA
At present there are two million students studying in Russian institutes of higher learning.
Russian medical degrees have global recognition and have topped the WHO and UNESCO
rankings. The Moscow Medical Academy, The Russian State Medical University and the St.
Petersburg State Medical University occupy the 2nd, 3rd and 5th positions in the world
respectively.
An MD (Doctor of Medicine) from a Russian University is now recognized as equivalent to an

MBBS in India by the Medical Council of India. Students completing their medical studies
from Russia will have to qualify the screening test conducted by MCI to start their practice in
India.
Requirements : For obtaining admission the candidate should have a minimum of 50 per cent
marks. As per the Medical Council of India (MCI), prior to the student’s departure, he will
have to apply to the council in the prescribed form and obtain an eligibility certificate. The
documents required at the time of admission include :

• Medical Certificate with all necessary laboratory tests results, including AIDS test

Course duration : The duration of the medical course is six years preceded by a 10-month
preparatory course in Russian if the medium of instruction is Russian, Some universities in
Moscow and St. Petersburg offer medical courses in English where the preparatory course is
not necessary. On successful completion of the six-year course the student is awarded with a
MD (Doctor of Medicine), recognized as equivalent to an MBBS in India by the MCI.
Tuition fees / scholarships: Depending upon the university, place of study and course, the fee
structure differs from US$ 1700 ti US$ 3300 per year in the case of English medium, the
tuition fees is US$ 2300 to US$ 5500 per year. The fee paid to the university includes tuition
fees, hostel accommodation and study material. In some universities the hostel fee is collected
separately which is about US$ 300 per year. Each student will additionally need about US$
800 to YS$ 1000 for their food and personal expenses per year.

SWITZERLAND
The culture of Switzerland, in fact, is characterised by the diversity of its geography, its
languages and its religious affiliation. This is reflected in the variety of its literature, art,
architecture, music, customs and hospitality. Switzerland is the home of three of Europe's
major languages (German, French and Italian),
Currently, Switzerland has 12 recognised traditional universities (10 cantonal universities and
2 federal institutes of technology), 8 universities of applied sciences, 15 universities of teacher
education, and further university-level institutions supported by the Confederation.
Language ability: A good knowledge of the language of instruction (German, French or

Italian) is required. In the meantime, universities are offering more and more study courses in
English, in particular Master level studies. The universities of Basle (BS), Berne (BE),
Lucerne (LU), St Gall (SG), Zurich (ZH) and the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich
(ETHZ) are located in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. The universities of Geneva
(GE), Lausanne (LA) and Neuchâtel (NE), as well as the Federal Institute of Technology in
Lausanne (EPFL) are in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. The University of Fribourg
(FR) is situated in a bilingual canton. Therefore the courses are offered in German and / or
French. Since the founding of the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) in Lugano in 1996
the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland has also had its own university.
Duration of course: Bachelor’s degree is of 180 European Credit Transfer and Accumulation
System (ECTS) credits or three years full-time study and Masters degree is of 90-120 ECTS
credits or one and a half years studies.
Academic year: The academic year is divided into two semesters: the winter semester 06/07
from 23rd October 2006 to 2nd/16th February 2007 and the summer semester - according to
each university - from March/April 2007 to 15th June and 6th July 2007.
Admission Requirements: To be admitted to a university, candidates must possess either a

state-recognised Swiss maturity certificate or another foreign certificate recognised as
equivalent by the university. The university in question decides whether to recognise the
certificate and whether the holder is entitled to be admitted to studies. Some faculties reserve
the right to decide who is admitted even if students are in possession of normally recognised
certificates.
Entrance Examinations to SWISS Universities: Candidates who either hold certificates

which are only partly recognised for admission or who are asked by the university to take an
entrance examination have to pass the examination in Fribourg. These examinations are held
twice a year (at the end of June and September).

• IELTS is a test of English language proficiency. It is a method of assessing the English

• Academic is suitable for candidates planning to undertake higher education study or who
are seeking professional registration. General Training is suitable for candidates planning
to undertake non-academic training or work experience, or for immigration purposes.
IELTS has four sections : Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The total test time is
2 hours 45 minutes. The first three modules - Listening, Reading and Writing - must be
completed in one day. The Speaking Module may be taken, at the discretion of the test
centre, in the period seven days before or after the other Modules.

TOEFL
• The Test of English as a Foreign Language™ (TOEFL) measures the ability of non-native
speakers of English to use and understand English as it is spoken, written, and heard in
college and university settings.
• The TOEFL test is offered in different formats depending on a test taker's location
• The TOEFL Exam can be given throughout the year at various important cities.
The TOEFL iBT (Internet based Test) is being introduced in selected cities in different
countries. At the same time, the current form of testing (CBT- computer based testing) or
PBT (paper based testing) is being retained to ensure that there is sufficient capacity for all
who want to test. The computer- and paper-based (CBT, PBT) versions of the TOEFL test will
be given at a particular location until the Internet-based version is implemented.

The SAT has three scores, each on the scale of 200 to 800. Your score will include writing
(W 200-800), mathematics (M 200-800), and critical reading (CR 200-800).Your math and
critical reading scores on the new SAT can be compared to the math and verbal scores on the
old test. This is something colleges need for consistency in admissions requirements.
However, the SAT writing score is completely new.
SAT-2
• SAT - 2 is a more specialized test that consists of specific subjects namely Physics,
Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, English literature, History and Social studies,
Languages (Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, Italian), etc. It costs about $40 (basic
registration fees + language test with listening) plus International processing fee of $25
and additional surcharge of $22 for testing in India and Pakistan. All other subject test
costs $8 per test.
• The maximum number of subjects to be taken are three, but it is not necessary to take all
three subjects at the same time. You can take one or two subjects at a time.
• You can take this test any number of times, as there is no restriction to the number of tests
given.

• Many colleges use these Subject Tests for admission, for course placement, and to advise
students about course selection. Used in combination with other background information
(your high school record, scores from other tests like the SAT Reasoning Test, teacher
recommendations, etc.), they provide a dependable measure of your academic achievement
and are a good predictor of future performance. Some colleges specify the Subject Tests
they require for admission or placement; others allow applicants to choose which tests to
take.
