The explanation by Er. Kumar Abhishek is absolutely correct !
This is in keeping with Clause
4.5 of IS 10262 : 2009, [Combination of Different Coarse Aggregate Fractions] which states : “The coarse aggregate used shall conform to IS 383 . Coarse aggregates of different sizes may be combined in suitable proportions so as to result in an overall grading conforming to Table 2 of IS 383 (1970) for particular nominal maximum size of aggregate”. In the revised IS 383 : 2016, this is now Table 7, with a few minor modifications on the limits. The coarse aggregate used should be well graded. If we use the coarse aggregate of 20mm nominal size alone, it may not satisfy the percentage passing criteria of the above table. This necessitates mixing of 10mm nominal size aggregates with it. I think, establishing the proportion of 20mm & 10mm aggregates is a trial and error process. We have to carry out sieve analysis separately for 20mm & 10mm aggregates intended to be used. Then, try different proportions to find an optimum one that ensures conformance to the limits of percentage passing specified in the Code. The following table taken from a Text book clearly illustrates this process. In this, the “Specified Limits” corresponds to the old Code. We can make use of Table 7 of the revised Code, instead.
