Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The Smart Board allows for many aspects of UDL to be utilized. First, it’s visual, so students who have hearing
difficulty will be able to use the tool. Second, it can be used with headphones so that students who need help
reading can listen to me read the poem, which I did include in this product. Third, it can be used to help
students focus because there are guided questions included as well as two ways to understand the poem-
reading and listening.

Lesson idea implementation:

The Smart Board can be used in a couple of different ways. If the teacher desires, they can provide their
students with access to the Smart Board at home, so they can participate in a Flipped Classroom. So, the
students could go home, read and listen to the poem, and demonstrate understanding through answering the
questions in the Smart Board at home. They would then come back to school and the teacher could expand
the lesson by having a class discussion on different words and what happened in the poem. The teacher could
also pull the Smart Board up in class and allow the class to answer each of the questions. This could be
furthered by assigning groups and poems for each group for the students to present and answer the
questions using a Smart Board Template, provided by the teacher, which could be assessed.

The Smart Board would allow for differentiated learning in that there are multiple ways to absorb and present
the content. Smart Boards can be collaborative, allowing students to create and share their work. The lesson
can be concluded through a presentation of their work or through a quiz that would have each child answer
questions about either a new poem or a different poem. To allow students to read as well as listen to the
assessed poem, the teacher can provide a copy and read it aloud. A quiz would allow for feedback, and a

student created Smart Board would also allow the teacher to edit and add comments to their students’
boards.

Reflective Practice:
The Smart Board and interactive properties could hugely impact student learning because it is interesting and
engaging, which would make the student want to learn and give them the means to truly understand the
information. Because poetry is part of language arts, the unit could be expanded into symbolism in poetry or
bring similar questions into literature. Understanding poetry could lead into the students creating poetry,
which the teacher could put into PowerPoint Narrator and make copies of each poem for the students in a
book. This would encourage their creativity and also give the students a sense of pride because they had their
work published into a book that they get to keep.
