Experiment No. 2
Simulink Model of the DC-Motor

2-1 AIM:
The purpose of this experiment is to design and implement a Simulink Model
of DC Motor.
2-2 Theory:
The model for a DC-motor in frequency domain is derived as follow:

Equations (1) and (2) can be easily implemented in Simulink using standard
blocks as shown in Fig. 2.1.
The representation in Fig 2.1 uses integrators instead of transfer functions.
This allows setting the initial conditions for the current and speed state variables.
The model also includes the friction coefficient B. However, during simulations, B can
be considered zero or its value can be obtained from real motor, and the model will
be similar to the one described by equations (1) and (2). Create a subsystem by
selecting components shown in Fig 2.1 and name it as DC Machine. The simulation
block of the DC motor parameters is shown in Fig 2.2.

2-5 Procedure:
1. enter the values of DC-motor parameters, Ia_initial, wm_initial are the initial values
for the integrator. To observe the zero initial condition response, set these values to
zero.
2. Enter the value of inductance and resistance of DC motor (L= 3 mH, Ra = 0.3
Ω) in work space or in m-file.
3. Enter the values of (J = 35×10-3, Ke = 75×10-3, B = 0), these values are specific
to this engine and it can be calculated for any other engine.
4. Run the simulation (with default configuration parameters) for the following
two cases. Compare the observed values with calculated values. Save the
plots and include them in your report.
a) Va = 20V, Load_Torque = 0.3 Nm b) Va = 20V, Load_Torque = 0 Nm
5.
2-6 Discussion:
1. Design a simulink model of a DC Motor using following parameters
[L = 1.5 mH, Ra = 0.1 Ω, J = 20×10-3, Ke = 63×10-3, B = 1.2×10-3, Va = 12 V, TL =
0.15 Nm].
2. draw waveforms of ωm, Ia, Tem .
