COURSEWORK II (40%)

BACHELOR OF COMMERCE (HONOURS)

BBFA2124 Financial & Controlling Applications

Instructions to Students:

1. Assessment criteria
This is a team-based mini-case study assignment comprising of 3-4 individuals per team. Marks will be
awarded as per assessment matrix shown in Form A and Form B and will take into account the Peer Review
Questionnaire (IF APPLICABLE). Each group is only required to attach a SINGLE Form A and Form B
behind the cover page.

2. Guidelines for written assignment:

 The report must be done using Microsoft Word.

 All supporting financial analysis must be done using only ONE (1) Excel spreadsheet file where
students are required to demonstrate the ability to link all worksheet (if applicable) and show all
necessary functions and equations wherever possible. All worksheets are to be labeled and saved
using password 3RPA.

 Word document formatting requirements:


- Paper size: A4
- Top and bottom margin: 1 inch
- Left and right margin: 1.25 inch
- Font type: Times New Roman
- Font size: 11
- Pages should be numbered

3 Reference materials

 The standard Harvard Reference system must be followed in your written assignment. For guidelines
on Harvard Referencing, you may do so by accessing the university college intranet.

 Full references must be listed in alphabetical order and included at the end of the written assignment
which include author’s name, title of the book, publisher, the edition as well as the page where
references have been made.

 You must also include details of the website visited where information may have been used in your
written assignment, particularly the time of visit, the URL address as well as any other information
which is consider as materially important.

4. Submission of written assignment

 Your written assignment must include the following items and arranged accordingly:
(i) Cover page – the university college emblem, programme, course/subject, tutors’ full name, group
members’ full name (arranged in alphabetical order), ID and group number. A sample is attached.

(ii) The assessment criteria Form A and Form B must be enclosed as Page 1 and 2 within the
written assignment.

(iii) Coursework feedback for written assignment (attached)


(iv) Plagiarism statement
(v) Table of content
(vi) Group Assignment
(vii) Appendixes
(viii) All pages must be numbered.

 A soft copy of Excel spreadsheet must be enclosed WITH your written assignment. The class
representative is to help save ALL files (to be labeled as the full name of the first person in the group)
for all the groups within the class into a folder and folder is to be labeled according to the class. Class
representative of Group 1 is to compile ALL the folder for Group 1 and Group 2. Class representative
of Group 3 is to compile the folder for group 3 only.

 Both the written assignment AND the Excel spreadsheet must be submitted in latest by Week 11
(Friday before 5pm). ASSIGNMENTS SUBMITTED LATE WILL NOT BE MARKED AND
NO REASONS WILL BE ENTERTAINED. Class representatives are to collect the hardcopy for
ALL the groups, tied it using a thread and to put it into the respective tutor’s letter box located at the
third floor of Block SA.

5 The aims of the mini-case study are to test and to develop students’ knowledge, skills and abilities in
using Microsoft Excel, forecasting techniques and basic taxation.

Introduction

As part of GBI expansion plan to venture into South East Asia region, the company had decided to set up a
wholly owned subsidiary, GBI Asia Region Sdn. Bhd. (GBI Asia) in Malaysia as the regional office for this
region.

The subsidiary company

GBI is expected to inject RM1,000,000 as paid up capital into GBI Asia. The subsidiary is expected to
commence business from its rented office cum shop room at the heart of Kuala Lumpur. The holding
company had appointed you as the management consultant to carry out a detail study on the financial impact
of this proposal.

Business operation

GBI Asia will import all the bicycles it sells from GBI US and will handle the Asia region sales orders and
enquiries.

Sales forecast

GBI US has appointed a marketing survey company and based on the survey and analysis submitted, the
sale of bicycles in Asia region follow certain trend and will be subjected to seasonal fluctuation. Refer to
Appendix A for further information.

Coursework II
Required:

Prepare a REPORT to the management of GBI on this proposal. Your report must include the following:

Group assignment I (20 marks)

1. The advantages and disadvantages of SAP software and the likely problem encountered if GBI Asia
decided to buy the SAP software for office use.

2. Recommend TWO financial and THREE non-financial performance indicator NFPI performance
measures that is suitable for GBI Asia to evaluate it’s staff performance. Justify your recommendation.

Individual Assignment II – Excel (20 marks)

Required:

Assuming you are the management accountant of the company, using the information provided in
Appendix A, prepare the following for the GBI Asia ONLY :

(i) Projected monthly income statement from 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019.
(ii) Projected monthly cash flow statement from 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019.
(iii) Projected monthly balance sheet from 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019.
(iv) Relevant functional budgets from 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019.

Your master and functional budgets must make use of spreadsheet functions like sum, addition,
multiplication, link and other relevant spreadsheet functions. You are required to submit the above answer
(i) to (iv) in softcopy and answer for (i), (ii) & (iii) above in hardcopy.

The company has a policy to hold 20% of next month’s sales as closing stocks

The company’s sales consist of 25% cash sales and the balance of sales are on 30 days credit. 5% of the
credit sales will not be recovered and will be recognized as bad debts.

Note 6
The company decides to purchase the following assets during the budget period under consideration:
1) A van worth RM60,000 was purchased in May 2018. Then two similar vans will be purchased again in
January 2019. All the vans will be paid in cash.
The company is scheduled to furnish the office with furniture and fittings worth RM30,000 with an initial
deposit of RM10,000 paid in October 2018 and the balance in subsequent month.
2) The company’s depreciate its Motor vehicles at 25% pa and Furniture & fittings at 20% pa on a straight line
basis from the date of acquisition.
3) The company is subject to Malaysian income tax rate of 20% and the tax is to be pay over 12 equal month
instalments as per CP204, the first instalment is due on in January 2019. You can assume the depreciation
expenses is same as capital allowance.
