1. General review

The geographical characteristics of Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is located on the joint of two continents – Europe and Asia. The
territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan occupies 2724,9 thousand кm2, and
reaches from the lower river Volga in the west – to the mountains Altai in the
east and from the mountains Zailijsky Alatau of the Northern Tien-Shan in the
south – to the Western-Siberian lowland in the north.
In the area of lands the republic takes the ninth place in the world, ceding
only to Russia, China, the USA, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, India and Australia;
the second place on the territory among CIS countries. The extent state frontier
of the republic – 13394 km, including: with the Russian Federation – 7591 km,
the Republic of Uzbekistan – 2354 km, the Republic of Kirgizstan – 1241 km, the
Chinese – 1782 km, Turkmenistan – 426 km.

Administrative-territorial structure
Nowadays the system of the administrative-territorial structure of the republic
includes 14 regions, 2 cities of republican importance, 177 administrative areas,
87 cities, 30 settlements and 6693 rural settlements.
Population size for 01.01.2016 (аccording to the current data) –
17670,6 thousand persons.
Population density – 6,5 persons per 1 km2.
Capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan is Astana with population size for
01.01.2016 – 872,6 thousand persons.
The largest city is Almaty with population size for 01.01.2016 –
1703,5 thousand persons. The largest region by area is Karaganda
(428 thousand кm2). The most densely populated region is
the South Kazakhstan (24,2 persons per 1 кm2).
