Using Onesearch:

Onesearch  menu  explore UWA  library (contains “advanced search” at the search bar)

 Sign in for full access; contains eShelf (can store your journal articles)

Expert help guides: teaches you about the referencing styles; go to the dentistry tab and you can find
helpful guides…

Searching for a specific journal: go to advanced search; criteria “in the title” & material type
“journals”  view online  use the search box at the database (e.g “Australian Dental Journal”)

Webofscience and scopus will tell you the impact factor of specific journal articles

Hierarchy of evidence

 Levels of evidence is what degree that info can be trusted


 JBI Connect and Cochrane library for systematic reviews
 Find evidence at evidence based summaries/guidelines (BMJ Best practice, clinicalkey,
uptodate, ETG complete)

Route for finding evidence based database:

Tick “guidelines” and “First consult” in the database for a specific condition (e.g “gingivitis”)

Searching strategy basic: does brushing fluoride toothpaste pose a risk to very young children

Key concepts: brushing with fluoride toothpaste; risk of; young children

Keywords: fluoride toothpaste, risks, children

Boolean search techniques

 Use AND/OR to combine concepts


 Use NOT for subsets
 Use * Truncation (Austral*)
 Use quotation mark (only searches for these specific term)
 Use question mark for spelling ambiguities
 Use brackets for nesting

“fluoride toothpaste” AND (child* OR toddler*) AND (risk OR danger*)


Medline vs Pubmed

 Pubmed has a greater number of articles, but medline articles are selected for higher quality
and it has greater control over search strategy in Ovid interface
- Click for “systematic review” and “advanced search”
 Make a use of “limits” to refine search in medline
- Click the database: Ovid MEDLINE(R) Epub Ahead of Print, In-Process & Other Non-Indexed
Citations, Ovid MEDLINE(R) Daily, Ovid MEDLINE and Versions(R) and tick map term to
subject heading
