Office Note submitted on Design of Trough on Satyawada Medium

Drain in Mandapaka (v) Limits

INTRODUCTION:

Satyawada drain is a Medium drain in N-Yanamudurru Sub-

basin of Upputeru basin in Godavari Western Delta. It starts in the village limits of
Tetali village in Tanuku mandal and joins Gosthanadhi Major Drain at K.M.35.600
R/B in Velpuru (v) limits.

Satyawada medium drain is a total length of 8.000 KM. From

KM 2.800 to KM 5.800 is not having defined course i.e. for 3 KM length was classified
as Mandapaka Madugu (water pool) without any H.P.’s and spread vast area of land
varying from 50 to 130 m width is called Mandapaka Madugu.

Due to its vast spread area and release of liquid waste

(Molasis) into this Madugu, which gradually filled with sludge waste and apart from
that Tanuku municipality is also diverting drain water and sewage waters of Tanuku
urban area into Mandapaka madugu. Hence a lot of silt and plastics are depositing in
the madugu day by day, rendering the drain water unable to flow freely to the down
stream side, due to which non-hygenic condition in the portion. It is necessary to see
that there is no stagnation of water containing chemicals and sewerage.

In view of the above, the Hon’ble M.L.A. of Tanuku Assembly

constituency and local public have represented to take up improvements to the
Drain. The Hon’ble Chief Minister during his visit to Velpur on the occasion of
Janmabhoomi Mavooru programme has given assurance for improvements to
Madugu portion and accorded administrative approval for Rs.8.47 Crores.

Accordingly estimate is prepared for removal of Kikkisa in the

first instance so as to assess the ground condition, there after site survey was
conducted. It is opined to excavate trench portion along the centre of Madugu. Later,
the Hon’ble M.L.A has requested to provide permanent water way of formation of
Prism duly filling with gravel. But the proposal of Prism formation is not considered
since the filled up gravel may not withstand, as the base soils are very week in
nature, and it is opined to provide permanent water way in the central portion by
means of construction of R.C.C. trough duly stabilizing the soil by means of driving
Casuarina ballies and providing sand cushion.
The following observations are made in the design and are as follows:

1) It is appeared that the said Madugu was acting as Balancing sludge

tank between the 2 notified reaches, for the entry of effluents and Municipal
sewages, and now if the trough is proposed between the existing two bridges,
and suitable Gravel/ earth is filled in madugu portion, it is very essential to
ensure proper discharge in trough U/s portion i.e. at KM 3.800.

The discharge at KM 3.800 is taken as the discharge at KM 2.800 in

assessing the discharge through the trough U/s, as such the total effluent
discharges from the industry (Sugar factory) and the Tanuku Municipality
sewages put together shall not exceed the difference discharge at KM 3.800
(10.17 Cumecs) and the discharge at KM 5.800 (6.46 cumecs) i.e. a mere 3.71
cumecs, otherwise the entry of Molasis and Sewages have to be prevented.

2) In the absence of estimation of Quantities of Molasis and Sewages

entering into the trough, the maximum discharge at confluence is 16.07
Cumecs may be taken as the discharge in the trough at KM 3.800 and the
Hydraulic particulars in the reach K.M 2.800 to KM 0.000 have to be revised.

3) As it is likely that during lean discharges i.e. dry weather flow in the
trough, the trough bed may be get deposited/silted upon with effluent and
sewage sediments. Hence, for maintenance point of view the Trough bed
width may suitably reduced at bottom to about 2.4m for a height of 0.3m in
the trough, which increase’s the velocity in the bed portion there by avoiding
silting in the trough portion.

4) The maintenance of trough with suitable tractor, the approach to

trough by means of a ramp may have to be provide.

If instructed, the design will be modified accordingly.
