ACTIVITY 3: What are you doing?
Aim: to inductively discover the form of the present progressive tense.
Procedure:
1. T informs Ss about the aim of the lesson and invites Ss to watch & listen to the song
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moUvVuLQu90). Ss listen and join in when they feel confident enough to do so.
2. T uses stick-figure cards to add more action verbs to the song. T and Ss sing together and mime the activities (TPR).
3. T invites Ss to open their books at page 116 and discuss the pictures. T plays the tape , Ss listen & read. T plays the
tape , Ss listen & repeat. T checks understanding by having Ss ask/answer the questions in ex. 2/ 116.
4. T writes the title of the lesson on the board and invites Ss to use the post-it word cards she had prepared beforehand
and form sentences on the board: e.g. “I am talking. You are watching. She is jumping. We are sleeping.” Ss construct
sentences with the word pieces and write them in their CBs. T elicits form / use of present progressive.
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T, Ss-Ss, Whole-class Timing: 15 min.

ACTIVITY 4: Walk the plank!

Aim: to revise action verbs and consolidate question asking and answering ‘Are you ...-ing?’; ‘Yes, I am. / No, I’m not.’
Procedure:
1. T informs Ss that they are going to play a game called ‘Walk the plank’. T displays pirate ship poster and divides Ss
in two teams. The aim of the game is to save the pirates. One team is in charge of the captain; the other team is in
charge of the mutineers. Ss ask/ answer questions using the verb cards displayed ‘Are you ...-ing?’ ‘Yes, I am. / No, I’m
not.’ Ss turn the cards named by their opponent player e.g. ‘Are you jumping?’ and if the answer is ‘Yes’ (there is a tick
on the back of the card) they move their pirate one space forward on the plank, whereas if the answer is ‘No’ (there is a
cross on the back side) they move back one space. The winner is the team who can save their pirate.
2. Ss play the game. T monitors and helps if necessary.
3. T invites Ss to play a game called ‘Sticky Fingers’. Ss are divided in groups. The teacher assigns a special "keyword/
phrase" - ‘I’m eating’. One student per group starts the game by saying something in the present progressive: e.g. ‘I’m
dancing’. The Ss each grab one of the leader's fingers, which are outstretched and repeat the sentence, changing the
pronoun ‘You are dancing. / He is dancing’. If the leader answers with the keyword the Ss all have to get down in
squatting position as quickly as possible / run to the nearest wall. If on the way, the leader "tags" a student, they are out.
If a student lets go when the leader hasn't said the keyword then they are also out. The game is repeated until only one
student per group is left. The winners then keep playing, just like a championship, until the ultimate winner is found /
rewarded.
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T, Ss-Ss, Team Work, Group work Timing: 15 min.

ACTIVITY 5: Play Time

Aim: to provide extra-practice in asking and answering questions using the present progressive.
Procedure:
1. In case the weather is good, the following games can be played outside! Ss make a circle. One student is ‘ Mr.
Giraffe’ and gets to wear the mask. He is in the centre of the circle. The students move around and ask him ‘What are
you doing, Mr. Giraffe?’ Mr. Giraffe answers ‘e.g. I’m swimming’. The children repeat “I’m swimming” and they do as
if they were swimming. The game goes on until Mr. Giraffe says ‘I’m eating’. The children run away to the nearest wall
and Mr. Giraffe runs after them till he/she catches one student, who goes to the centre, and the game continues.
2. T informs students that they are going to play another game called ‘Harry Potter’. T gives 1/3 of the Ss paper wands
and they become Voldemort. The remaining wand-less 2/3s are Harry Potters. When a Voldemort catches a Harry Potter,
they wave their wand and shout an instruction. e.g. jump/dance. Harry Potter then has to do that action in the same spot
until they are saved. The spell is broken when a FREE Harry Potter comes along and asks "What are you doing?" and
the caught Harry Potter replies "I'm jumping/dancing". T proclaims herself Dumbledore and is immune to Voldemort so
she can take the time to help the Harrys with the grammar, not having to worry about a Voldemort hitting her or the
student, and the student can take his/her time getting the sentence correct. It also helps the Voldemorts get some
practice with the vocab.
Interaction: T-SS, Ss-Ss; Whole-class Timing: 15 min.

ACTIVITY 6: Homework
Aim: to further consolidate the use of present progressive.
Procedure:
1. T gives Ss Ws and instructs how to solve the exercises.
Interaction: T-Ss, Individual work Timing: 1 min

Legend: T = teacher; Ss = students; BB = blackboard; SB = students book; CB = copybook; Fc = flashcards; Ws = worksheets; Pw =

pair work; Gw = group work; Iw = individual work; Wc = Whole class; Qs = questions; A = answer
