Lesson 3 - Islamic Beliefs
Explain the significance of the Qur’an and the Sunnah
Goal  as the primary sources of Islamic beliefs, practice, and
law, and their influence in Muslim daily life.

● Muslims think Islam is based on worship of the


same God as Jews and Christians.
Background  ● Muslims also honor the Jewish and Christian
Information  prophets.
● Muslims believe that Muhammad revealed the
purest version of God’s truth.

● The word of God (written by muhammad's


followers)
● It records 22 years of revelations to Muhammad.
● First revelation was in a cave outside Mecca in
610 C.E./A.D. Continued to his death in 632
The Qur’an  C.E./A.D.

● Inside the Qur’an is The Nature of God, creation,


and the human soul.
● Also address moral, legal, and family issues.
● Mush of the language is highly poetic.

● Muslim think of the old and new testaments as


holy books
● Qur’an us the most holy in Islam
Sacred Text  ● Muhammad's followers memorised these
revelations and ​wrote them down after he
died​.

● The Qur’an consists of 114 chapters, made up of
6,238 verses

● The sunnah is “Traditions of the prophet”


● What the Muhammad did daily
● If you follow the sunnah you are faithful to
islamic principles
● Words or actions Muhammad gave to live a good
life
● Helps interpret the Qur’an
The Sunnah 
● Most of this became Islamic law
● Based on accounts who knew muhammad
● Islamic religion is a theocracy in Iran and Saudi
Arabia
● Many of these passages deal with islamic law,
others promote moral or ethical concepts
● Actions

● Monotheistic, pray to Allah


● God created everything
● No human figure represent God
● Muhammad was a prophet, but no divine power
Islamic Beliefs  himself.
● This makes Islam and Christianity different
● Islam is a faith
● Muslim=Person

● Followers: Jews, Christians, and Muslims


● Christianity is the largest religion in the world,
Islam is the 2nd.
● Judaism is mostly in Israel and North America.
Christianity is mostly from Europe and
Americas. Islam is mostly from Middle East,

● Holy text for jews is The Torah. Holy text for
christians is Holy Bible (Hebrew Bible + New
Testament). Holy text for Islam is Qur’an.
● Prophet for jews is Many including moses, for
Christianity is Jesus (divine), and for Islam is
Muhammad.

● Each person has there own soul


The Soul and the 
● Actions now affect what happens when you die

● Recite the Qur’an


● Must be studied in its original language because
Islamic Practices  it the word of god.
● Always carry a copy
● Treat the Qur’an with great devotion

● Daily Life:
○ Muhammad said there is no difference
between you religious and daily life
○ Detailed rules are collected in the Sharia.
○ Some rules in the Sharia are don't gamble,
steal, or eat pork.
○ Also includes rules about family life and
for doing business
● Education:
○ Begin education by studying the Qur’an
○ Later students can go from the Qur’an to
Islamic Influence in  law, philosophy, math, and history.
Muslim Daily Life   ○ Islam has made many fine writers,
(3 slides)  scholars, and artists because of education.
● Social Classes:
○ 4 classes are Arabs, non Arabs, Jews and
Christians, and slaves
● Men and Women:
○ Men expensed to make money
○ Women generally stayed at home and had
fewer rights than men
○ Polygamy allowed because if the man died
then they could go to another man
supported.
○ Men can marry 4 times.

● You need to follow the 5 pillars


● The pillars are Faith, Prayer, Fasting, Giving to
the Poor, Pilgrimage.
● You need to believe there is no god but the god
and muhammad is the messenger of god
Islamic Laws  
● Need to declare it
(3 slides) 
● Need to pray 5 times a day
● You need to give money to those less fortunate
● During Ramadan Muslims eat no food between
sunrise and sunset.
● Go to Mecca once when living and circle the rock
