Genetic Counseling
Paper on the career of Genetic Counseling - included historical
development, job growth, and overview on a variety of different
genetic issues. I will complete mentor hours with a local GC
recommended by the counselor I interviewed.
This will show the genetic mutations in healthy people versus
people with particular mutations. I will be able to show the
markers of potential illness in an illustrated form.
A month: time needed to complete mentor hours and examine
patient examples.
About 10 hours to create the profiles of the patients
Patient Profiles will be looked at and considered as examples of
how to make the fake patient’s profiles.
$20 for the cost of ink and paper
I will create profiles for the different variations of genetics and
the mutations. This will involve creating pedigrees that show
what a family with a history of cancer looks like, which is
indicative of a genetic mutation, versus a family with no history
of cancer, indicative of no genetic mutations. I will get all my
pedigrees approved by my mentor. I will also make brochures to
summarize the genes and their related mutations as a resource
for the general population. While I will have to pull from a
variety of resources, such as the National Comprehensive
Cancer Network, Susan G. Komen, and my mentor, I hope to
provide a more comprehensive layman’s source with the
information about specific genetic mutations, images to show an
example of the mutation, and all the resources for further
research and support. This will also be verified by my mentor for
accuracy. I will have paper copies of all my work for the judges
to follow along, but I will have photograph copies of my work in
a powerpoint for display and explanation.
This is a career I would consider going into. I have no
experience with cancer diagnoses from me or my family
members. I will have to strictly follow HIPPA from a medical
 provider standpoint. Lastly, I have no medical training so my
grasp is limited, but I hope to further it with research and mentor
hours.

Product Description:
This product will help educate patients on the specific genetic mutations they have. A strong focus
will be put on breast cancer and colon cancer as these were two of the most commonly seen cancers
with known genetic mutations. I will create patient profiles to demonstrate guidelines and what a
Genetic Counselor looks for. Additionally, I will create educational brochures with the information
about gene mutations, pictures, and what the guidelines from the National Comprehensive Cancer
Network. I will also include other resources such as support groups and websites. I hope to overall
create general information anyone can use to understand genetic mutations and what they mean
for a patient. I would also like to hold a “class” with AP Biology, as well as regular biology. I will to
explain to them how these genes affect cancer and how genetic testing is performed.
