INFORMATIVE SPEECH OUTLINE FORMAT 3-5 minutes

Student’s Name: Nhak Seakleang

Date: 02/03/2018
Topic: Global Warming

General Purpose: To inform

Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about global warming
Thesis: Together prevent global warming

I. Introduction
A. Attention Getter: "That so many of us are here today is a recognition that the threat from
climate change is serious, it is urgent, and it is growing. Our generation's response to this challenge
will be judged by history, for if we fail to meet it - boldly, swiftly, and together - we risk consigning
future generations to an irreversible catastrophe."
These are the words President Obama used to begin his global warming speech before the United
Nations Summit in 2009
B. Reason to Listen: The warming of the earth has increased rapidly. So, we have to protect it.
C. Credibility Statement:
1. I have been fascinated by global warming
2. I have read and studied my collection of books about the global warming many times, and
have done research on the Internet
D. Thesis & Preview of Main Points:
I. Thesis: The subject has certainly drawn a lot of attention.
1. First, I will describe What is Global Warming?
2. Second, I will describe What Causes It?
3. Third, I will describe What Effects does Climate Change Have on the Earth and
its Inhabitants?
4. Four, I will describe What are some Possible Solutions to the Problem?
II. Restate thesis.
A. What is Global Warming?
1. Global warming is the gradual increase of the temperature of earth's
atmosphere and oceans.
a. Over the past century the average temperatures have gone up by
just over one degree.
b. Many scientists agree that the earth's temperatures are starting to
increase at a faster rate.

Transition: Now that we have learned about the What is Global Warming? I
will describe What Causes It?
B. What Causes It?
1. Global warming occurs when greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide,
nitrous oxide, and methane trap heat inside the earth's atmosphere.
a. Think about what happens when you open your car door after the
windows have been rolled up on a hot day.
b. Heat from the sun enters the car, but the frame of the car prevents
it from escaping.
c. To a small extent, this is a representation of what happens during
global warming.
d. Burning fossil fuels like petroleum and deforestation both
contribute to the problem.

Transition: Transition: Now that we have learned about the What Causes It?
I will describe What effects does it have on the earth and its inhabitants?

C. Global warming has already started to affect the earth in several ways.
1. Arctic glaciers have begun to melt
a. Threatening indigenous life such as the polar bears
b. Melting glaciers also cause sea levels to rise
c. This could become a problem for low land areas like the ones in
the South Sea Islands
2. Ocean temperatures have begun to rise
b. This causes some of the algae to die which can affect the entire
food chain.

Transition: Now that we have learned about the What effects does it have on
the earth and its inhabitants? I will describe Possible Solutions to the Problem

D. What are some Possible Solutions to the Problem?

1. There are ways we can combat the effects of global warming
a. The Clean Air Act of 1990 is a law in the United States that
attempts to protect and improve the earth's air and atmosphere
b. Some of the components of this law include limiting harmful
vehicle emissions and phasing out the use of chemicals that can
damage the ozone layer
c. we can work to prevent global warming by planting trees and by
car-pooling
III. Conclusion
A. Review of Main Points:
1. Today I first describe What is Global Warming?
2. Second, What Causes It?
3. Third, What Effects does Climate Change Have on the Earth and its
Inhabitants?
4. Finally, What are some Possible Solutions to the Problem?
B. Restate Thesis: Together prevent global warming
C. Closure: Climate change is seen as a serious threat that is receiving serious
attention world-wide. Hopefully, this global warming speech has helped inform you
of what causes it and the effects that it has on the earth. It's up to you to decide how
you can help to do something about it.
