1 INTRODUCTION

This document explains the Scope of work for fire proofing repair works on Existing sphere legs (Total
9 Numbers) and new fire proofing on pipe flanges and pipes underneath the spheres .

3 MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS OF FIREPROOFING SYSTEMS

3.1 Concrete Fireproofing for Sphere Legs

Existing site survey report (Photographs) visual inspection concludes that existing Fire proofing
material on Sphere leg is Concrete with fabric wire mesh. Concrete is the most commonly used
fireproofing material for protection of general structural steel in process plants.

Guniting is most widely used method for fireproofing of steel.Thickness of concrete for fireproofing as
specified in API 2510A, Section 5.8.3.2 Page 34, is 50 mm (2”). Thickness of fireproofing shall be 75
mm as per existing site survey report, refer to 4300-GPTS-S002-ISGP-G00000-BA-5793-16103 work
pack for civil works activities for fire proofing spheres, Appendix 1.

Reinforcing fabric for the Gunite shall be 50mm x 50mm x 2.5mm, galvanized. The fabric shall be
secured by 1.3mm galvanised tie wire to studs or spaces to maintain a clearance of not less than
30mm from the face of the member, and with a minimum cover of 40mm from the outside face of
casing. Adjacent sheets shall be lapped at least 50mm, and securely tied together.

Fire proofing requirement of up to one and half hours (refer to API 2218, Section 6.2.2 Page 24), upto
2 hours as per API 521 recommendation in relation to spheres.

3.2 Fire Proofing materials for Flanged Joints

Flanged joints located under Propane and Butane spheres are to be fireproofed using Insultech or fire
blanket or equivalent which can provide passive fire protection and act as thermal barrier to withstand
extreme temperature, block the flame path and retard heat flow. Along with Flanged joints’ the ESDV
along with the actuator shall also be provided with fire proofing inline with the above material.

Firetex M90 by Leigh paints or equivalent – Epoxy intumescent fire protection coating (able to
withstand 650°C at 90 min exposure) shall be applied prior to installation of fire blanket.

4 SITE PREPARATION AND APPLICATION FOR FIRE PROOFING

4.1 For Sphere legs

Damaged portion of Fire proofing shall be chipped off properly. Steel surfaces to be cased shall be
cleaned of all loose paint, dirt, rust, scale, etc.; oil and grease deposits shall be removed with
detergents, and the steel left in a clean and dry condition. Sound paint work may remain on the steel.

Wire mesh shall be used for reinforcement and shall be supported on the member being fireproofed by
means of welded studs or nuts on edge or equivalent approved. Clearance between the mesh and the
structural member shall be as minimum 30 mm minimum for 75 mm fireproofing thickness. Steel mesh
shall be tack welded with existing wire mesh.

The fixings for the reinforcing fabric shall be robust, and in sufficient quantity, to secure the fabric in
the required position, at all stages of the concrete application.

The junction between fireproofing and bare steel shall be sealed against the ingress of water.

Heat resistant/refractory base cement (approved Portland cement) with W/C ratio of 0.4 to 0.5 shall be
used. The cement, gravel, sand mix shall be in the ratio 1:1.5:3. The gravel shall be 4.5mm to 6.0mm
and the sand shall contain at least 4.0% moisture.The concrete may be plaster applied and trowelled
smooth.

Guniting shall not be carried out in the vicinity of disconnected piping where rebound and splatter can
enter unless the openings in such lines are closed with wooden plugs or other suitable shields.

The gunite shall be trowel finished and exhibit a dense mass.

No fireproofing shall commence when the bare steel temperature is 38°C or higher. In hot climates the
ideal time to commence fireproofing is later afternoon, to allow curing overnight. Similarly, no
fireproofing shall commence when the bare steel temperature, or the air temperature is 4°C or less.

4.2 For Flanges

No fireproofing shall commence when the bare steel temperature is 38°C or higher. In hot climates
the ideal time to commence fireproofing is later afternoon, to allow curing overnight. Similarly, no
fireproofing shall commence when the bare steel temperature, or the air temperature is 4°C or less.

Fire blanket should be constructed of a high density insulation filler with outer jacketing able to
withstand harsh weather conditions and chemical environment. It should be flexible and easy to install,
easy to remove and reinstall allowing quick access and esay equipment serviceability.

Installation Requirements:- Each and every item which needs to be fire blanketed, shall be measured
for retrofitting to existing field conditions to assure fire blankets are “Custom Fit” design with maximum
thermal efficiency.

Prior to application of Epoxy intumescent fire protection coating, verify flange surfaces are clean and
dry, avoid trapping oil, grease or combustible materials. Ensure areas are free of obstructions such as:
supports, bracketing, valve handle extensions.

Refer to Appendix 1 for Isometric markup of flanged joints and ESDV with actuator to be fire proofed.
