SIGNALMASTER™ 8-HEAD
SAFETY MESSAGE TO INSTALLERS
People’s lives depend on your safe installation of our products.
It is important to read, understand and follow all instructions
shipped with the products. In addition, listed below are some other
important safety instructions and precautions you should follow:
• To properly install this light: you must have a good
understanding of automotive electrical procedures
and systems, along with proficiency in the installation
and use of safety warning equipment.
• When drilling into a vehicle structure, be sure that
both sides of the surface are clear of anything that
could be damaged.
• In order for the light to function properly, a separate
ground connection must be made. If practical, it should
be connected to the negative battery terminal. At a
minimum, it may be attached to a solid metal body or
chassis part that will provide an effective ground path
as long as the light system is to be used.
• Locate light control so the VEHICLE and CONTROL
can be operated safely under all driving conditions.
• Do not attempt to activate or deactivate light control
while driving in a hazardous situation.
• You should frequently inspect the light to ensure that
it is operating properly and that it is securely attached
to the vehicle.
• File these instructions in a safe place and refer to them
when maintaining and/or reinstalling the product.
Failure to follow all safety precautions and instructions may
result in property damage, serious injury, or death to you or
others.
I. GENERAL.
The Federal SignalMaster™ is an economical, low wattage,
directional light assembly that is designed for use in a flashing
mode. It is supplied with a 50-foot cable that is designed to
minimize voltage drop across the cable. Lens colors available are:
amber (standard), red, blue, and clear.
WARNING
These lights are intended for secondary warning only.
They are not intended for use as a primary warning system.
II. INSTALLATION.
1. SignalMaster Light Assembly.
Install the light assembly as described in the instruc-
tions packed with the mounting kit.
2. Control Unit.
Install the control unit as described in the instructions
packed with the unit. Perform the electrical connections as
described below.

III. ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS.
WARNING
Failure to observe this WARNING may result in fire,
burns or blindness.
If shorted to vehicle frame, high current conductors can
cause hazardous sparks resulting in electrical fires or
molten metal.
DO NOT connect this system to vehicle battery until ALL
other electrical connections are made and mounting of all
components is complete.
Verify that no short circuits exist, before connecting to the
Positive (+) battery terminal.
A. Power Connections (see figure 1 ).
NOTE
User-supplied wires, as described in the control unit in-
structions, are required for the power connections.
1. Connect the (+) BAT/IGN, (-) GND, and (-) CASE
GROUND wires as described in the control unit instructions.
2. If applicable, connect the AUX IN, AUX OUT, and
DASH LIGHTS wires as described in the control unit instructions.
3. Connect a short length of 18-gauge wire between
the (+) BAT and (+) BAT/IGN positions on the control unit’s power
connector as shown in figure 1.
B. Extension Cable Connections.
The 9-conductor, 14-gauge, 50-foot cable is used to the
control unit’s cable connector or directly to the control unit as
required. A user-supplied, 10-gauge, red wire and a 20-ampere in-
line fuse are used to connect the SignalMaster cable’s red wire to
the power source. To complete this portion of the electrical
connections, proceed as follows:
WARNING
Do not connect more than one, 6 or 8 head, halogen
SignalMaster assembly to a SignalMaster control-
ler or the SignalMaster outputs of a SmartSiren.
Electrical fire or damage to the controller or siren
will result.
1. Route the cable toward the control unit. Cut the
cable as short as feasibly possible. Strip and connect each solid
colored wire, except the red wire, as described in the control unit
instructions. Ensure that each color wire is connected to the proper
position. See figure 1.
2. Connect the SignalMaster cable’s red wire to a user-
supplied, 10-gauge red wire. Route the red wire toward the vehicle
battery. Install an in-line, user-supplied, 20-ampere fuse as close
to the battery as possible. DO NOT connect the red wire to the
vehicle battery’s (+) positive terminal at this time.
3. Visually inspect all connections for loose wire
strands or bare wires which may cause a short. Using the control
unit instructions, verify that the power connections are correct.

Service life of lamp will be shortened if glass is touched. If
glass has been handled, clean with a grease solvent.

A serious injury may result if lamp is touched when hot.
Always allow lamp to cool before removing. Halogen
lamps are pressurized and if broken can result in flying
glass. Always wear gloves and eye protection when
handling the lamps.
CAUTION
Use of higher wattage lamps can result in damage to the
colored lenses.

which secure the lens. Carefully pull the lens straight away from
