CASE ANALYSIS No. 2


R.E. CONSTRUCTION: It’s Now or Never

I. Background
Engr. Romeo Estabillo is graduated from Mapua Institute of Technology and decided to
organize his own construction firm after passing Civil Engineering board exam in year 1981.He
started accepting contracts for construction of residential houses, then slowly his clients grow in
number.
At first, he has two assistants. One is Mr. Silvino Santiago, whose task was as draftsman
and to assist Engr. Estabillo in supervising workers at the various construction sites. The other one
is Mr. Romulo Mamaril, who was assigned to coordinate purchasing, bookkeeping and other
related administrative activities.
At the third year of operations, Engr. Estabillo was already directing operations in his
newly constructed office inside his residential compound. By this time, two more female
employees were hired to assist in the various tasks performed in the office.
By 1996, Engr. Estabillo already has six full time civil engineers, two draftsmen, ten
administrative personnel and one messenger and one security guard.
By June 1996, he felt that business was continuously growing, so he will have to secure
four additional civil engineers on a full time basis. He was hesitant in his decisions for he feels
that he may that be able to perform his functions since he was directly supervising all operations.
With these thoughts, he pondered on how he will go about solving the problem.

II. SWOT Analysis


Strengths
 R.E. Construction established reputation from the client that services is standard and
effective.
 His firm is skyrocketing because of the location of the firm.

Weakness
 Mr. Estabillo is the only one who is deciding of the firm, therefore he cannot ask someone
if his decisions are right enough.
 Even if he has a successful business, he never attend any proper training in management.
 Lower employees, which means that the employees has hard time in their duties and
responsibilities.
Opportunity
 He can expand his firm in other Cities and other location.
 Hiring four Civil Engineers can make more clients be accommodated to his firm
 Lessen the duties and responsibilities if he acquire four additional Civil Enginners.
Threats
 Additional cost if he wants to add employees.
 Financial stability of the firm.
 Rising other local firm in his location.

III. Recommendation
Base on the story, Engr. Estabillo is a risk taker, a good decision maker and he is a positive
thinker. If he wants to expand his firm and add manpower to his firm.
This is my recommendation I considered
a. Engr. Estabillo must attend management trainings or learn more about management on
how to manage well a firm or a company.
b. He must hire someone who can help him to manage the firm and supervise him on what
is better on his firm.
c. He must be open to talk to his manpower regarding to what is good, what is the problems,
suggests ideas to make the firm better.

IV. Reaction
Engr. Estabillo is a man of courage and wise decision maker. At the young age, he already
organize a firm and it grows successfully. If he wants to hire more employees, he might be
overwhelmed by the duties he cannot handle alone.
He must attend training in management or hire someone who is capable of helping him to
manage and supervise him in his firm. At the same time, he can deal with the future expansion of
his firm.

MOTORBUS COMPANY: Que Que Sera

I. Background
Engineer Hermogenes Ancheta has just received his appointment papers from his new
immediate superior, the Vice-President for Operations, he has been promoted from Assistant
Manager to Manager of the Maintenance Department.
Engineer Ancheta has just passed the board examination for Mechanical Engineering when
he joined Motorbus Company in 1993. By June 1995, he informed his former classmates at the
University of Santo Tomas that he has promoted as an Assistant Manager for Maintenance.
He had promoted from Assistant Manager to Manager when Engineer Gaudencio Iductivo,
who in turn to be at 62 years old. After the approval from VP for operations, the next day after the
approval of Engineer Inductivo retirement, Engineer Ancheta received an appointment papers
promoting him to be a Manager.
By the time on his duty as a manager he inspect the storage room and he found the uneven
supply of parts. Some parts were in excessive quantities and some important ones were
inadequately stocked and the corner room contains a big volume of obsolete parts.
The problem now is that how he handle the operation most effectively when he’s just new
to his job, while there are 50 more buses added in the route for 100 buses will servicing the various
routes assigned to Motorbus Company.

II. SWOT Analysis


Strengths
 Motorbus Company is growing, therefore that the company is trusted regarding to its safe
trips.
 Motorbus Company always securing that there busses is in good condition to avoid
accidents.
Weakness
 There are many useless supply of parts, which means it cost a lot of money going to
nothing.
 The old method of purchasing which causes the delays of the materials needed.
 Less manpower and employees which leads to other employees to threaten quit their job.
Opportunity
 Acquire more manpower and employees to lessen the duties of other workers.
 Expansion of trips in other cities outside Manila.
 Replace the old method of purchasing with latest methods so the work must be done in
time and no delays will be encountered.
Threats
 Financial risk of the company
 Rising local Bus company with lowest fare
 Employees might quit their jobs if the management will not listen to the problem

III. Recommendation
Base on the story, Motorbus Company faces a large problem. From the old style of
purchasing, manpower and additional busses will came next week. Engineer Ancheta is the one
who will face and manage this problem.
This are the recommendation that I considered:
a. Mr. Ancheta must change the old purchasing method, it causes delays and pile up the
purchase request.
b. He must know what is needed in the company, he must know what is the needed material
and supply so he can avoid wasting materials and money.
c. Maintenance units must be increase proportional to the busses added.
d. He must attend training in management to further increase his knowledge about
managing maintanance.

IV. Reaction
The job of Mr. Ancheta is to make the operation effective and efficient. He is the one who
manages the maintenance of the busses and the purchasing control.
He must change the purchasing method and improved to latest to avoid problems and
delays. He must do a list what must be the materials and supply needed in the company.
The company must acquire maintenance unit proportional to the busses to avoid the other
employees to quit their jobs.
