(3) Administration of the examination

 Please bring your student ID card and put it on the desk.
 You must use ink (black or blue) to answer questions. Ballpoint pens are perfectly fine. Please do
not use pencils.
 You can put pens, a non-programmable calculator (if needed), and a ruler (if needed) on your desk.
 No phones and no watches are allowed. Please switch off your phone and put them in your bag.
 Please close your bag and put it below the seat next to your seat.

(4) Nature of the exam

 Closed book examination.
 Short answer questions.
 The style of questions are similar to that of the last year’s exam and homework questions in the
workout book. But carefully note (5) – (v) of this memo.
 Most questions say “Show your work”. This means that you need to explain how you obtained your
answer by using words, notation, equations, algebra, etc. Reading off the graph does NOT count as
explaining your answer. You should show algebraically/ mathematically how you arrived at your
answer.
 Clear and concise explanation, please.
 You can bring a non-programmable calculator to the exam.

(5) How to prepare for the exam
(i) The examination covers materials covered by lectures in Weeks 1, 2, 3, and 4, and tutorials in Weeks
2, 3, 4, and 5.

(ii) Exam questions and suggested solutions for the past mid-session exam are available on the course
Moodle page.
(iii) Review homework questions, with particular attention to the following questions:
 Ch. 2: 1, 3, 5, 11
 Ch. 3: 1, 2, 3, 8
 Ch. 4: 1, 2, 3, 9, 10
 Ch. 5: 1, 3, 4
 Ch. 6: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
 Ch. 15: 1
 Ch. 19: 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 11
 Ch. 20: 1, 2, 3, 10
(iv) Review concepts and methodologies introduced in the lectures.

(v) Notice that many questions in the workout book are divided into a number of steps. Some questions
in the examination will ask key questions only without asking a number questions step-by-step. As an
example, see Question 5.4 in the workout book. What do you think are the key questions here? The key
questions are (d) and (e), and questions (a), (b), and (c) are designed to help you answer (d) and (e). So,
when you review homework questions, ask yourself what are the key questions and make sure that you
can answer those key questions directly. Suppose Question 5.4 asks (d) and (e) only, without asking (a),
(b) and (c). Can you answer (d) and (e)?
