The enterprise to set up European culture in an extensive territory; having natural condition, if not
adverse frankly antagonistic to its ancient culture; represents in the foundation of the Brazilian
society, the main fact and the most rich one in consequences. Bringing from distant countries our
way of life, institutions, ideas and officially trying to maintain all this in an environment which is
many times resilient and hostile, we are still today foreigners in our on land. We can enlighten our
humanity in many new and unforeseen aspects, improve the kind of civilization we represent,
however, the product of our work or laziness seems to part of an evolutionary system form another
climate and from another landscape.
Its meaningful that we had received the heritage from an Iberian nation. Spain and Portugal used to
be bridged territories by which Europe used to communicate with other worlds. They used to be a
border area forming a transition, less loaded with European culture which, despite of that, they kept
as an utmost patrimony.
