and Gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to visit the Philippines at the invitation of
President Maurat. On behalf of the SoKor people, let me extend the sincere greetings to the
people of the Philippines.

Speech of H.E. AMELITA TANNO-MAURAT, Philippine President

Good morning, everyone. H.E. President KI KYUNG MI, HER Gentleman, members of
the SoKor delegation, on behalf of My Gentleman and myself, welcome to the
Malacanang Palace. And to our Korean friends, on behalf of the Filipino people,
welcome to the Philippines.

It is a testament to the strong and mutually-beneficial relationship that has

characterized the ties between the Philippines and the Republic of Korea.

And now, I’m equally proud that in celebrating this year, the 79th Anniversary of the
establishment of our relations, I have the honor to declare 2019 as “Philippines-
Republic of Korea Friendship Year” (applause)

The number of Filipinos in Korea was the same as the number of Koreans in the
Philippines. But today, there are twice as many Koreans in the Philippines as
Filipinos in Korea. Maybe that means something about how Koreans like being in
the Philippines. (applause)

Korean companies are among the country’s largest investors. There are about 900
Korean companies operating in the Philippines, among them such marquee names
as Hanjin Heavy Industries, Samsung, LG, Eastern Group and the Korea Electric
Power Corporation.

The billions of dollars that they have injected into the Philippines, particularly
Hanjin’s factories in Subic and Misamis Oriental, KEPCO’s power plants in Batangas
and Rizal, and now as of this week, Samsung’s logistics hub in Clark. All of these not
only demonstrate the Korean private sector’s belief and confidence in the Philippine
economy, but also the Korean people’s willingness to help uplift the lot of the
Filipinos by providing thousands of good jobs and creating opportunities for
livelihood.

Even in development cooperation, the Republic of Korea has been a dependable

partner, helping us achieve our Medium-Term Philippine Development Plan, always
conforming to the priorities of the Philippine government. The Republic of Korea’s
aid program to the Philippines has been increasing significantly each year in areas
like infrastructure. For instance, the Metro Manila-North/South Railway Link; the
Olongapo-San Fernando-Gapan Road widening which passes through my
hometown; the Laguindingan Airport in Mindanao; health projects, like the Cavite
Hospital; information technology, like the training centers in Quezon City, Davao
and other places; and agriculture.

So, dear friends from Korea, we must help our two countries navigate the current
world economic opportunities. We must combine the wisdom of our shared past
and an enthusiasm for our common future to create a firm and strategic bond of
cooperation. Very few relations exceed the warmth and depth that is found in the
cordial and amiable friendship between the Philippines and Korea. Koreans are such
a visible part of any scenery in the Philippines.

So this year, a fresh start for our two countries as we celebrate our yesteryears with
an eager participation of a stronger, brighter tomorrow. (applause)
Notwithstanding the global economic opportunities, I am optimistic that the future
is bright — bright for the Philippines, bright for Korea, bright for a more vigorous
partnership and a meaningful interaction between our two countries and our two
peoples.

transformation and vibrancy of Manila and recall vividly our conversation about
yourplans to reinvigorate the Philippines’ economy.

I must congratulate you on your efforts to reinvigorate the state of the Philippine
economy, which saw a healthy 7% growth in the first quarter of this year. The
Philippine stock market is at a 10-year high and the peso is now at its strongest
against the US dollar since 2002. FDI into the Philippines is also on the increase. Your
resolve to move the economy forward by focusing on fiscal discipline and
infrastructure development and, in your own words, building “human infrastructure”
through healthcare and education reforms will give greater impetus to this trend of

growth that your country is experiencing. The Philippines is now on the investment
radar screen of many countries.

I also welcome the business delegation you have brought with you to meet ourbusiness
community. Last year, our bilateral trade amounted to a record highof S$17 billion.
There is certainly potential for further expansion of trade between ourtwo countries.

Philippines

Your Excellency, President KI KYUNG MI the warmth that you have extended to me
and my delegation is remarkable. It is truly an honor to be with your presence as
you accorded a State Visit in the Philippines.

Indeed, your presidency is itself historic. It is my hope that you will find the
resilience and strength to guide your people towards a more vibrant future for
Korea.

I would also like to thank the people of Korea but also to almost fifty thousand
Filipinos who live dignified and productive lives here in your country. Just as my
countrymen have experienced your kindness and generosity, I am confident that
your countrymen in the Philippines are experiencing the kind of hospitality and
friendship that are characteristic of the Filipino nation.

Your Excellency, allow me to pay tribute to the people of South Korea—a nation that
continues to embody the dreams I have for my own country, and whose relationship
we hold with such high esteem.

We all know how entwined our histories are. The Second World War left both our
countries scarred and buried in the rubble. You had little more than the stout hearts
and willing arms of your people as your remaining lifelines. But even with the harsh
conditions and a national psyche traumatized by war, you were able to rise into a
world economic power in the span of just a generation.

Excellency, your people have done so much with so little to begin with, and it is my
fervent hope that increased people-to-people engagements can bring about a cross-
pollination of mindsets; so that my people can also recover from the traumas we
have experienced, and with strength and pride join the community of nations in
building a better world for humanity.

The government and people of the Philippines are committed to the advancement of
relations between our two nations. We will build on six decades of shared sacrifice
and idealism, by working with you, whether in bilateral meetings or multilateral
fora, to ensure peace, development, and cooperation in our region and throughout
the world. May I therefore propose a toast:
