Importance of Breakfast 1

A good morning to our beloved principal, Madam Jaffna Ann, senior assistants, teachers and not
forgetting my dear students of SMK St.Paul. On this glorious sunny morning, me Kimmy as the
alumni of SMK St.Paul would be so glad to meet everyone in conjunction with the
entrepreneurship day. First and foremost, I would like thank our principal gratefully for my
presence here today. Before I begin, have all of you take your breakfast? Are all of you active
enough to listen to my speech? As I said before, why breakfast is the most important meal of the
day? A very well-known phrase goes like this “Breakfast like a King, Lunch like a Prince and
Dinner like a Pauper.” Without hesitating, I would like to give a talk on importance of breakfast
to everyone especially students like you.

Dear students,

Breakfast is the starter of every one’s life and it is the first meal which is ingested by one.
Breakfast is indeed a very important meal. A good breakfast fuels you up and gets you ready for
the whole day battle. Breakfast provides our body with much-needed fuel and energy after an
overnight of fasting. This is exactly why this meal is known as breakfast meaning that breaking
the fast. In case an individual is skipping his breakfast, his trying to kick-starts his day without
any fuel. It so funny like you start your car without any petrol in it. According to Food and
Nutrition service, breakfast provides important daily nutrients such as calcium, carbohydrates,
proteins, fibers to improve school performance among students and those who fail to do so
results in malnutrition. Malnutrition refers to deficiencies, excesses or imbalances in a person’s
intake of energy and nutrients which results in underweight, stunting, vitamin deficiencies etc.
Additionally, the positive effects of breakfast are more demonstrable in children who are
considered undernourished, typically defined as one standard deviation below normal height or
weight for age using the US National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) (Polity et al., 1996)
how does it work? Eating breakfast can improve cognitive performance, test scores and
achievement scores in students especially in younger kids of 7 to 12 years. According to a study
published in the journal “ Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine”, students who
increased their participation in school breakfast programs has significantly higher math scores

than students who skipped or rarely take breakfast. Through studies and researches, it is proven
that breakfast boosts up energy level of a person and effectively affects their daily routines.
People energy needs varies depending on their activity they carry out. Typically, men need more
energy than women, growing kids need more energy than adults, people who live in cold
climates needs more energy than others. Coming to the point, a good breakfast consists of equal
quantities of nourish supply according to the food pyramid. For instance, a breakfast with high
fat intake such as nasi lemak would take longer time to undergo digestion process and literally it
would demotivate a person to begin their work. Thus, whatever it is food balance is essential for
a good breakfast. Breakfast is widely acknowledged to be most important meal of the day.
Children who habitually consume breakfast are more likely to have favorable nutrient intakes
including higher intake of dietary fiber, total carbohydrate and lower total fat and cholesterol
(Deshmukh-Taskar et.al, 2010). Breakfast also makes a large contribution to daily micro nutrient
intake (Balvin Frantzen et al., 2013). Iron, B vitamins (foliage, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin,
vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 are approximately 20-60% higher in children who regularly eat
breakfast compare to breakfast skippers (Gibson,2003).

Besides, breakfast is influential in upgrading ones’ concentration level which becomes the
power tool of successful student. According to research published in ‘Physiology and Behavior “,
students given a low-glycolic breakfast were able sustain attention longer than students
consuming high-glycaemia breakfast. Breakfast is known for restoring the level of glucose in our
body which is very crucial for proper functioning of brain. To talk about concentration, it is vital
for task fulfillment, better understanding and would also upsurge better skills to students.
Students, exams are around the corner, we find that we just have too much to study and there
always lack of time. Do not worry! The best thing to do is follow correct study methods such as
paying attention in class. Maximum concentration in class helps one to reduce time for revision
on certain topics. In order to maintain concentration level, go the extra mile to take breakfast in
the morning. It also creates a good hyperactivity among students where they are more active in
physical activities. Furthermore, decision-making are at the best among students which prevents
them from negativity and practice good vibes. Morning energy would help them to stay active
for long time and produce tireless kids although they are packed up with busy schedules.
Children who do not consume breakfast are more likely to be less physically active and have a

lower cardio respiratory fitness level (Sandercock et al., 2010). Breakfast enables kids to be
active all day and perform better in all physical activities held which promotes good coordination
of eyes and hand. At times being a student, I felt the similar hassle of piled homework, group
assignments, projects, and lack of time to study. But a good starter would ease the struggles and
hard times a student faces. Breakfast helps to relieve stress and uncontrolled emotions. Sufficient
supply of nutrients would maintain proper mind and good control of emotions among students.
Moreover, there is evidence that breakfast positively affects in children in terms of behavior,
cognitive and school performance. (Hoyland et al., 2009)

Moreover, breakfast helps a person to lose system of weights and prevents obesity. Since all
of you are primary feather school-day kids it’s not too early to cultivate good habits for bright
future tense with no sickness especially. I would advise all of you to be more practical and
observant on your organic structure batch index number (Body heap index). Is everyone aware of
these particular ? I'm pretty sure that everyone over here has your physical educational activity
and health sitting twice a week in your timetable. Through this session you are taught on proper
healthy lifestyle including the BMI. You may be wondering what BMI correlative with breakfast.
Yes it does! BMI is a measure of body blubber based on meridian and weight that applies to adult
workforce and charwoman. People are generally considered obese when their body mass index
(BMI), a measuring obtained by dividing a person’s weight by the square of the person’s height.

Referring to above subject, it always preferred to ‘prevent than cure’. Present, even kids are
involved in obese job thus it’s really crucial to prevent for future. Consuming breakfast can also

out a meal will help them lose weight, but in fact it number oppositely where you remainder up
snacking in the sunrise. This would end up in assemblage of unhealthy calories in your dead
body. Dear students, since all of you are still in primary level it is still important to understand on
your healthy lifestyle such as breakfast. So if you people are skipping your breakfast it ends up in
enticement to grab fatty and salty sugary snacks due to mid-morning hunger or even eat more at
tiffing or dinner. Skipping breakfast would lead to vulnerable craving which sometimes hurt you
too. In short circuit, breakfast helps prevent corpulence among students and enhances to adapt to
a healthy lifestyle.

To sum up, breakfast has been labeled the most important meal of the daylight. Although the
quality of breakfast was variable quantity within and between studies, children who reported
eating breakfast on a consistent basis tended to have superior nutritional profiles than their
breakfast skipping peers. Breakfast eater generally consumed more daily calorie yet were less
likely to be overweight. Grounds suggests that breakfast consumption may improve cognitive
function related to memory, exam grad, and school attendance. Breakfast as role of a healthful
diet and life style can positively impact children’s well-being. Parent should be encouraged to
provide breakfast for their children or explore the accessibility of a school breakfast program.
Last but not least, breakfast has many positive impacts on children thus to take breakfast daily to
live a happy and healthy lifestyle. I would like end my words by thanking all the audience who
