PUBLISHER’S LETTER
M
uch to the chagrin of many who eagerly await the arrival of extraterrestrials to
solve the problems of Earth, astrophysicist Stephen Hawking caused considerable
excitement in April by warning that, rather than seeking such contact, we should
be trying to avoid it.
The British theoretical physicist is no stranger to the limelight. His scientific career spans
over forty years. His books and public appearances have made him a kind of academic rock
star. In 2009 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in
the United States. Hawking has neuro-muscular dystrophy that is related to amyotrophic lat-
eral sclerosis (ALS), a condition that has progressed over the years and has left him almost
completely paralyzed. He speaks only with the aid of a computer. His mind, though, remains
one of the sharpest to be found in this sector of the galaxy.
It is not that Hawking thinks there is no life out there. On the contrary, he thinks that,
given the odds, almost certainly there is. It is just that there is, as he sees it, no telling what
that life may be like, and prudence would dictate that we do what we can to stay out of its
way, at least, until we know a great deal more than we do now.
Hawking’s thoughts come in a new documentary series for the Discovery Channel, Ste-
phen Hawking’s Universe, where, as one of the planet’s leading scientists, he sets out to
tackle some of the world’s really great mysteries, including space and time travel. “To my
mathematical brain,” says Hawking, “the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly
rational. The real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be like.”

Most alien life, he thinks, is probably microbial or simple animals. Any intelligent, and

even civilized, life may very well view Earth as a target for colonization or some other form of
exploitation. He thinks the first contact with arriving ETs might be very much like that of the
American indians greeting European explorers. That didn’t work out very well for the in-
dians, he reminds us. One also can’t help but recall the unfortunate experience of the cargo
cults of the south Pacific during World War II.
Interplanetary travelers, he points out, could very well be nomads or pirates out to raid

If Hawking is right, then someone should warn the folks over at NASA who seem to think

Probably none of these have ever been abducted by an interplanetary spacecraft. But then,
again, maybe they have. That would certainly explain a lot.

he flyer I’d received in the mail in-
vited me to a four-hour seminar on
firewalking. “Everyone participating
will be taught how to walk barefoot
on hot coals without burning their feet,” it
proclaimed. To a long-time investigator of
the paranormal like me, it was an irresistible
challenge. So I made a deposit toward the
$75 registration fee to reserve my place, and
eagerly looked forward to the event.
I didn’t doubt the reality of firewalking. It
has been a well-documented fact for centu-
ries. It is almost always done in a religious
context, as part of a ceremony. The phenom-
enon was recorded as far back as when Pliny
the Elder in the first century A.D., told of the
practice by an ancient Roman family which
performed it at an annual sacrifice to Apollo.
Anthropologists have observed it today in
India, Greece, Spain, Japan, China, Bulgaria,
Sri Lanka, Tibet, Thailand, Fiji, and Brazil.
Then, of course, there is the biblical story of
the Hebrews and the fiery furnace.
I’d personally witnessed firewalking in
l974 at a California festival of religious/
spiritual/metaphysical organizations; it was
done by a Japanese priest, who demonstrated
it as part of his sect’s worship. Moreover, sev-

The Strange Death of

one could protect him.
Previously, even after being convicted of a
brutal murder, he had been allowed to join
the Knights of Malta who had become his
protectors. That had lasted until he com-

remained unknown until this century, but it
was serious enough to have him booted out
of the order. So his erstwhile protectors, the
very same Knights of Malta, contracted for a
hit to be made on his life. The Vatican was
asked for approval of the assassination and
consented. The artist was then murdered, his
body never found.
In a matter that might be titled the “Da
Vinci Code meets Cold Case,” four centuries
after the murder of one of Italy’s most fa-
mous artists, the crime is apparently still
under investigation. The four-hundred-year
anniversary now has Italy in a frenzy that has
been described as Caravaggio-mania; but art
historians, archaeologists, scientists, and at
least one independent investigator are hot on
the trail of the perpetrator.

If the plasma hypothesis is correct, the

of pretty lights in the skies that occurred
thousands of years ago. They did not simply
record something beautiful to behold, aes-

importance otherwise. No, there was more to
the displays in the skies and the ancients
knew it. These displays, caused by strong
electrical and magnetic interactions, would
have affected human health and mental con-

even have completely obliterated the evi-

first re-dated the Great Sphinx of Egypt to an
extreme antiquity, one of the questions I was
asked by mainstream historians and archae-

might have been incinerated!
Perhaps we should take ancient knowl-
edge to heart. The displays of plasma config-
urations seen ages ago in the skies, meticu-
lously recorded in rongorongo script, may be
a record of our past and the key to predicting
future cataclysmic Earth changes.
