The Marker Moves

#1 Subject-Verb Agreement

The Rule: Your subject and verb must match or agree in number.

Ex: He gives me a high five. They give me high fives.

Most of the time this will be automatic, but there are some traps that may be
different than your home dialect! With that in mind, here are the traps:

Trap #1: Evil added information (like the “evil and”)

Ex. Joe, who is my first and best friend from down the street, and I
(play/plays) ultimate frisbee every Friday.

Trap #2: Each = Singular

Ex. Each of the members of the team (are, is) athletic.

Trap #3: Every = Singular

Ex. Every person in each of my classes (are, is) intelligent.

Trap #4: -ing when used as a subject = Singular

Ex. Remembering the names of all of the Kardashian sisters (are, is)
easy.

Practice

Write your own story about a marker that correctly uses evil added
information, each, every, and an –ing subject.
