ChE-506: Advanced Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics

M.Sc. Chemical Engineering 2017F Session

Solve the following Numerical

1. Calculate ̂ and ̂ of methan (1) and n-butane (2) vapour mixture at 2.76x106 Pa, and 310.93K
and y1 = 0.8942 assumint the pure components and the gas mixture to follow virial equation of
state, . The following data are given:

Component Tc(K) Pc(bar) Zc Vc(cm3/mol) ω

Methane(1) 190.6 45.99 0.286 98.6 0.012
n-Butane(2) 425.1 37.96 0.274 255 0.2
Also calculate the fugacity coefficient of mixture

2. Show that fr a binary gas mixture following the virial equation of state

, where

3. Show that the activity coefficient for components 1 and 2 in a binary gas mixture following virial
equation of state, are given by

4. A gas phase mixture of nitrogen(1) and n-butane (2) at 460K and 40 bar contains 49.74 mol %
nitrogen and 50.26 mol% n-butane. Calculate the fugacity coefficient of nitrogen and n-butane in
the mixture assuming pure components and the mixture follows;

(i) Van der Waals equation of state

(ii) Redlich-Kwong equation of state
Also calculate the fugacity of the mixture. For nitrogen: Tc = 126.2K, Pc = 34 bar, and for n-
butane: Tc = 425.1K, Pc = 37.96 bar

acid at 20°C. The density of various wt% formic acid solution at 20°C are given below
Wt% formic acid Density (g/cm3)
0 0.9982
10 1.0246
18 1.0441
30 1.0729
50 1.1207
