A. OVERVIEW

My overarching topic that I chose for my senior project is health care and my specific

topic for my research project is racial disparities in health care. During the summer I was

conflicted on my senior project topic. I pitched my idea of racial disparities in incarnation to my

parents. My father told me that it was a great topic, but it was a bit overused. Then he told me

about this grant that his job got a 2.5 million dollar grant to study disparities in health care. After

doing some research I fell in love with the topic and developed a passion. I want to host an

interactive seminar that will educate the public on how to properly fill out medicaid forms and to

promote awareness of discrimination that might occur in the healthcare system. My consultant

for my senior project will be Mrs. Leslie Shoemake in which she taught me for biology and

forensic science during the school year. Mrs. Shoemake is knowledgeable and aware of racial

disparities that not only occur in the criminal justice system but also in healthcare. My project

will take place in the second semester of school. I will be evaluating the success of my project by

making sure every person that walks out of the seminar/awareness fair will leave with a better

understanding on health care, compared to their prior knowledge. The materials I would need for

my event is food provided for the seminar, brochures for any additional information about my

topic, my laptop, questions to ask after the presentation, and a camera to take pictures of my

event.

C. MARKETING PLAN/FACILITIES/AUDIENCE

My target audience will be the lower income minorities who struggle with health care and

anyone else who doesn't understand the health care system. If you have better health care, then

you have a longer span of living a better life. Caucasians in the United States live approximately

20 more years longer than minorities such as, African Americans and Hispanics. The reason

being Caucasians get offered better health care and health care plans then the lower minority

class which results in better living for the higher class. Hosting this event will give the lower

socioeconomic class a “higher leg” in understanding health care for their better living,

furthermore living longer. I will advertise my project more in lower income neighborhoods

,communities and patients who can't afford health care to ensure I have the proper audience for

my event. I will go advertise at free health care clinics, Eastern Virginia Medical School,

neighborhoods as stated before and on social media.

F. PROJECT JUSTIFICATION

This project will be an outstanding way to educate the public on current healthcare issues

to promote better and a longer lifestyle. This challenges me by forcing me to get out of my

comfort zone to help for a common good. I hope to accomplish that my audience will be better

prepared for anything that might occurs in the healthcare system and figure out ways how can

they effectively us health care for their well-being. This project didn't really dawn on me before

hearing about it . I never really thought it was a serious issue that we face today , but it is. So

many lower class Americans are faced with confusion when it comes to health care or think that

they can't afford it. In reality its other ways they can seek medical attention without a huge bill. I

want to help those lower class Americans understand that.They can file for healthcare and how to

properly understand and fill it out.

G. PROJECT-PAPER CONNECTION

The legal concern in my paper is racial disparities in the healthcare system. Racial

discrimination does occur in this field even though others don’t recognize it. This is an issue that

many people do not realize its impacted on the lower class of America. The connection that my

paper and project will have is discussing the issues and disparities that occur in healthcare and

how to correct them. For example, In my paper I will talk about how lower-class minorities don't

use or think they don't qualify for medicaid. At my project I will be showing my audience how to

properly acquire the medicaid health care assistance program and all the information they need

for qualification to promote a longer lifespan for the lower-income.
