The Nelson Public Library’s next Amnesty International
book club title has been announced and all are invited to
participate in this free, drop-in book club.
Anyone interested discussing books over tea and cook-
ies with other friendly book enthusiasts should pick up a
copy of ‘Brown Girl in the Ring’ by Nalo Hopkinson in
advance of the next AI book club meeting on Tuesday,
April 3 at 7 pm.
A Canada Reads book in 2008 and the basis for an
upcoming film, ‘Brown Girl in the Ring’ is a dystopian
novel set in Toronto after an economic collapse, when
those left after the rich and privileged flee the crumbling
city return to old ways: farming, barter and herb lore.
Against this backdrop, heroine and struggling single
mother T-Jeanne must discover a new road forward.
Popular Canadian novels form the basis for the Amnesty
International (AI) Book Club and the Library has teamed
up with the local Amnesty group to host bimonthly meet-
ings for great conversations about each book. “The club
has led to some fascinating discussion so far,” says April
book club host and library staffer Heather Goldik. “The
AI members who lead the sessions bring so much insight.”

Scams on the rise
As tax season approaches members of the public are
again reminded to be cautious as more and more scams
begin to surface. The Nelson Police Department has
received reports of several scams in our area.
In the Canada Revenue Agency scam a caller tells the
victim that there is a warrant for their arrest. The caller
can be forceful and intimidating, sometimes pretending
to be a police officer. Payment for outstanding taxes is
then negotiated with the victim to avoid being arrested.
Credit card scams involve the victim being told that
their credit card has been used. The victim is asked to log
onto their computer to verify their identification and their
identity is then compromised.
In the US Federal Reserve Bank scam, the caller wants to
confirm the victim’s identity as they are entitled to a large
sum of money. Again this is an attempt to compromise
your identity. There are many variations of these scams out
there. Always think before you provide your personal infor-
mation to anyone.
Scams can be reported to the Canada Anti-Fraud Cen-
tre. The Centre is also an excellent resource with ideas on
how to protect yourself and can provide guidance if have

Arts and culture venues are an important part of the
fabric of life in the Columbia Basin: they’re where we
hear professionals sing, watch our children dance, marvel
at artwork and more. To support and enhance the sec-
tor, Columbia Basin Trust is helping 12 facilities reno-
vate, relocate or upgrade with nearly $830,000 in support
through its new Arts and Culture Venue Grants.
“Realizing the importance of arts and culture to Basin
residents, we have committed to meeting community
needs for venues through these grants,” said Wayne Lun-
deberg, Columbia Basin Trust. “These 12 projects will
contribute to keeping the region a vibrant place to live
and visit.” The Trust announced this granting stream in
December 2017, with a commitment of $3 million over

The Hidden Garden Gallery in New Denver is receiving
$15,210. In need of a new home, this visual arts venue,
currently the only one in the Slocan Valley, has found a

renovated venue, the gallery will continue to provide the

Elizabeth Cheyne 1929-2018

The many friends of Elizabeth Cheyne will be saddened to learn of her passing on
February 15 at the Ivy House, Silver Kettle, Grand Forks, her home for the past
few years.
Elizabeth, a longtime resident of Kaslo, will be best remembered for her many
years as a realtor. She was active in a number of clubs and organizations in the
village and was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Born in 1929 of Irish parents in Montreal, she spent her early years in that city. She
was on the swim team in Verdun, Montreal and competed in the provincials. After
her marriage, she and her husband, Irv, lived in Toronto. They moved to Kaslo in
1976. At first arrival, Elizabeth worked for the T&H Lumber Company. She soon
joined Carol Magaw in her real estate business. Later Elizabeth and Irv moved to
Victoria. After Irv’s passing, Elizabeth returned to Kaslo where she was employed
by Coldwell Banker Real Estate. Continuing in her profession she worked for Gary
Cockrell until her retirement.
Elizabeth is survived by two children, Darlene and Mark; two step-children, Rob-
ert and Barbara; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a brother, Bob and
a sister, Sheila. She lost a young son, Stephan, when he was six years of age.
Later, in the summer, a tea will be held for her many friends and acquaintances.

The EACSW program at Selkirk College fosters a strong
base of compassion, critical thinking and confidence pre-
