Choir’s Choice

It’s your turn to choose! Over the next few classes, we will go through the process of finding and
presenting songs that YOU want to sing! At the end, we’ll select a song that will become the
“choir’s choice” song of the year.

Part 1: Introduction and brainstorming

Part 2: Selecting sheet music
Part 3: Creating a presentation
Part 4: Presentations and voting

Criteria
The song must be appropriate for choir. Here are some things to keep in mind when you are
choosing:
1. Appropriate lyrics
2. Has sheet music available to purchase from J.W. Pepper
3. Is written for a choir of Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass (SATB)
4. Is doable (not too challenging)

Process
In groups of 3-4, you will begin by brainstorming song ideas. From that list, you will search for
sheet music online at J.W. Pepper. You will then choose your top 3 that are to be approved by
Mrs. Banman. Your group will choose 1 of these 3 to present to the class. Finally, the class will
vote and music will be purchased!

Part 1: Brainstorming
Create a group of 3-4 people (try to find people outside of your usual friend group). Together,
come up with a list of 20 songs that you think would be fun to sing in choir. These can be any
songs from any genre – pop, hip hop, rap, musical theatre, choral, etc.

Part 2: Selecting Sheet Music

You are now going to find out if sheet music is available to purchase for your song ideas from
day 1. Sheet music needs to be available in order for the songs to be accepted. By the end of the
class, you need to have 3 songs selected to hand in for approval by Mrs. Banman.

Instructions
Go to www.jwpepper.com to search for sheet music. On this website you can type in keywords
to see what music is available. If you are having trouble finding available songs, you can also
search through titles by selecting “Choral” from the pull down menu and choosing a genre.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you select the “choral” filter in order to make sure it’s available for
choir.

To hand in by the end of the class:
