National

PM Narendra Modi opens Asia's longest tunnel


 Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the 9.2 km long Chenani-Nashri all-weather
road tunnel on the Jammu-Srinagar National
Highway. The road tunnel will reduce the travel time
between the two state capitals of Jammu and Srinagar
by approximately two hours.
 The two-lane Chenani-Nashri tunnel is Asia's longest
bi-directional highway tunnel, which will cut the
distance between Jammu and Srinagar to around 250
km from the current 350 km.
 The world's sixth road tunnel has a transverse ventilation system enabled and controlled
by ABB software. It also boasts features like Integrated Traffic Control System (ITCS), Video
Surveillance System, FM Rebroadcast System, Entrance Detection Control System and
Active Firefighting System.
 There are 124 closed-circuit TV cameras for surveillance inside the tunnel. In case of a
traffic violation, the control room will inform the traffic police deployed outside the tunnel,
who will fine the violators on the spot. The new 9.2 kilometre Chenani-Nashri tunnel in
Jammu & Kashmir, the longest highway tunnel in Asia, will feature a state-of-the-art ABB
ventilation system to ensure that users have access to fresh air as they drive through it.

India's 1st book village to come up in Maharashtra


 A village in Maharashtra famous for its strawberries is soon going offer more - rare Marathi
books and magazines. From May 4, Bhilar will become India’s first ‘book village’ where
tourists and locals can come and read books, magazines, newspapers stacked at 25
premises. Near the popular the British-era hill station of Mahabaleshwar, Bhilar already
attracts a large number of tourists, who come to taste the locally produced strawberries.
 Bhilar, which has a population of about 10,000, and nearby areas produce around 100 tons
of strawberry every year, earning them Rs 50 crore. And 90% of the village’s population is
involved in strawberry farming.

Bhopal to have India's first privately run railway station


 For the first time in Indian Railway history Habibganj station in Bhopal has been handed
over to the private firm to be operated by it.
 The station building will be developed in line with airport terminals. However, Railway
Minister Suresh Prabhu clarified that trains at the station will still be run by the Railways.

Rajnath Singh launches Akshay Kumar’s portal ‘Bharat Ke Veer’


 Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh launched the website and app named 'Bharat Ke
Veer', to facilitate the monetary contribution to the kin of soldier personnel killed in
action.
 The Home Minister launched the website on the occasion of the 'Shaurya Diwas', which
was organized to facilitate the CRPF with bravery awards and medals. This website is
technically supported by National Informatics Centre (NIC) and powered by State Bank
of India.
 The amount so donated will be credited to the account of ‘Next of Kin’ of those Central
Armed Police Force/Central Para Military Force soldiers. Actor Akshay Kumar was the
Guest of Honour during the function.

IISc ranked best educational institution by HRD Ministry


 Bengaluru's Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Delhi's Miranda House have made it to
the top of respective categories in the country's official higher education rankings
announced by the government.
 Releasing the list in New Delhi, Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash
Javadekar stated that the government will provide more grants and funds for institutions
faring better in rankings.

 Real Estate Act comes into effect, 13 states notify rules. Real Estate act finally came into
effect on 1 May 2016, ending a nine-year-long wait. The act will usher in more transparency
and accountability in the real estate sector.
 Union Government launches MSEFC Portal and MyMSME Mobile App. Micro and Small
Enterprises Facilitation Council (MSEFC) portal will facilitate implementation of delayed
payment provisions of the MSMED Act 2006.
 PM Narendra Modi launches UDAN scheme, flags off first UDAN flight on Shimla-Delhi
route. Simultaneously, PM Narendra Modi also launched the inaugural UDAN flights on
Kadapa – Hyderabad and Nanded-Hyderabad routes.
 NITI Aayog's vision: Houses, vehicles, ACs for all by 2032. The Niti Aayog has envisaged a
new India in which all citizens in 15 years will have houses with toilets, vehicles, power, air
conditioners and digital connectivity.
 India notifies conformity to UN resolution of imposing sanctions on North Korea. The
resolution prohibits the sale of luxury goods including jewellery, gems, yachts and luxury
automobiles like racing cars that could directly contribute to the development of North
Korea.
 Union Government takes 10 new Swachh Iconic Places under Swachh Bharat Mission. The
announcement was made during second quarterly review meeting on the Swachh Iconic
Places that was held at Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Katra, Jammu and Kashmir.
 India becomes world’s fifth largest military spender. As per the data of SIPRI, the United
States remains the world’s largest military spender.
 SC directs Kerala government to reinstate TP Senkumar as DGP of Kerala. The ruling was
made by a bench of Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta. The bench ruled that
Senkumar was dealt unfairly and arbitrarily.
 India wins elections to two UN subsidiary bodies. India, along with 12 other members, was
elected for the period of three years to the Committee for Programme and Coordination
(CPC), a subsidiary body of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
 No red beacon on Delhi HC judges cars. Delhi High Court judges have decided to give up the
use of red beacons starting immediately. The decision follows Union Cabinet’s ruling that
bans the use of beacon lights from 1 May 2017.

 SC sets 25% of net salary of husband for maintenance to an estranged wife. The decision
was made by a bench of justice R Banumathi and Justice MM Santanagoudar while directing
a man to pay his ex-wife Rs 20000 out of a monthly salary of Rs 95527.
 Union Government and Naga rebel groups agree to extend ceasefire till April 2018. The
decision over extension of ceasefire was taken at a meeting held between the officials of the
Union Home Ministry and the Ceasefire Supervisory Board of Naga armed factions on 17
April 2017 in New Delhi.
 Supreme Court approves e-auction of Taj Mansingh Hotel in Delhi. The auctioning the Taj
Mansingh Hotel property was stiffly opposed by Tata group-run Indian Hotels Company Ltd
which manages the hotel.
 Union Cabinet approved to introduce Constitution (123rd Amendment) Bill 2017 in
Parliament. National Commission for Backward Classes (Repeal) Bill, 2017 calls for
repealing the National Commission for Backward Classes Act, 1993 along with Savings
Clause.
 SC restores trial against L K Advani, M M Joshi and Uma Bharti in Babri Masjid demolition
case. It ruled that there will be no fresh trial because of framing of conspiracy charges
against senior BJP leaders.
 Government banned red beacons on all VIP vehicles, including PM’s, emergency services
exempt. The red beacon ban will not be implemented in cases of emergency vehicles like
ambulances, fire brigades and Police.
 Railways Ministry launches first-ever train with glass roof coaches on Visakhapatnam-
Araku route. Coaches also feature LED lights, rotatable seats, GPS based info system, etc.
 PM Modi inaugurates new units in Koradi thermal power station in Nagpur. These
dedicated thermal power stations include three super-critical units 660 MW each at Koradi,
two of 500 MW each at Chandrapur and one of 250 MW at Parli.
 Union Cabinet approves setting up of Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy at
Visakhapatnam. The institute will be set up as "an Institute of National Importance"
through an Act of Parliament.
 Parliament passes HIV and AIDS (Prevention and Control) Bill, 2017. The Human
Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (Prevention and
Control) Bill was passed on 21 March 2017 in the Rajya Sabha.
 Parliament passes Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2017. The Bill
amends the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950 and the Constitution
(Pondicherry) Scheduled Castes Order, 1964.
 Lok Sabha passes the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The changes in the Motor
Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2016, were approved by the Union Cabinet on 31 March 2017.
 SC seeks reply from 6 states on plea to ban cow vigilantes. The plea filed by Tehseen S
Poonawalla said violence committed by these cow vigilante groups had forced the Prime
Minister Narendra Modi to declare them as people who are “destroying the society”.
 Parliament clears decks for GST rollout from July 1. Once the new regime is implemented,
harassment of businesses by different authorities will end and India will have one rate for
one commodity throughout the country.
 Union Cabinet approves closure of Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Suraksha Yojana. The scheme
was launched with an aim to cover 5 million overseas blue collar Indian workers who have
the ECR category passports in 17 countries.

China successfully launched first cargo spacecraft


 China successfully launched its first unmanned cargo spacecraft named Tianzhou 1.
 It is programmed to conduct scientific experiments after reaching the now-crewless
Tiangong 2, China's second space station. China aims to build up the permanent space
station by 2022.
 China becomes the 3rd country after US and Russia to Master the techniques of refueling in
Space.

China to host BRICS Film Festival in June, 2017


 The 2017 BRICS Film Festival will be held in Chengdu, southwest China’s Sichuan Province
from June 23 to 27, 2017.
 There will be 30 films from BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa)
screened during the festival.
 The first BRICS Film Festival was held in New Delhi, India, in September 2016.

World Earth Day being observed


 The World Earth Day is being observed all over the world on 22 April with the message to
protect the environment.
 The campaign theme for 2017 is 'Environmental and Climate Literacy'. The first Earth
Day celebrations took place in 1970.

Nepal, China hold first ever military exercise


 Nepal and China will hold the first-ever joint military exercise named ‘Sagarmatha
Friendship-2017’ from 17 April 2017 with a special focus on combating terror and
disaster management.
 Sagarmatha is the Nepali name of Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak, that is
bordering between Nepal and China.

First rail freight service to China departs UK


 The first rail freight service British goods from the UK to China has departed on its 17-
day, 7,500-mile journey.
 After going through the Channel Tunnel, the train will pass through seven other countries
before arriving on 27 April, 2017. They are France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Belarus,
Russia and Kazakhstan.

Japan Officially Recognises Bitcoin as Currency


 Bitcoin has finally gained the recognition of a mainstream currency along the lines of other
fiat currencies.
 The privilege follows the implementation of a new law in Japan which categorizes Bitcoin as a
legal payment option within the country.

 THAAD missile defence system operational in South Korea. The Terminal High Altitude
Area Defence (THAAD) reached an initial intercept capability to defend against North
Korean missiles.
 Dubai becomes first city in world to get its own Microsoft Font. The font is available in three
styles as 'Dubai', 'Dubai Medium' and 'Dubai Light' and can be in Italics, Underlined and
Bold.

 German lawmakers approve package of security measures, partially ban burqa. The ban on
full covering of the faces will not be implemented on health workers who are working to
protect themselves against infectious diseases.
 El Salvador becomes first country to ban metals mining. The law bans "prospection,
exploration, exploitation, extraction or processing of metallic minerals in El Salvador."
 UAE's first solar-powered gas station opens in Dubai. The station goes in line with the great
strides made by the Emirate of Dubai to turn itself into a hub for renewable energy as part
of the Dubai 2020 Vision. The Vision plans make the emirate the smartest and the most
sustainable in the world.
 China bans ‘Muhammad’, ‘Jihad’, and ‘Medina’ as baby names. China has banned its citizens
from naming their babies Muhammad, Medina and Quran, mainly targeting the minority
Muslim group living in the western region of Xinjiang.
 Ghana, Kenya and Malawi to take part in WHO malaria vaccine pilot programme. In October
2015, two independent WHO advisory groups recommended pilot implementation of RTS,S
in three to five settings in sub-Saharan Africa. The recommendation came from the
Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) on Immunization and the Malaria Policy
Advisory Committee
 Cuba and Morocco re-establish diplomatic ties after 37 years. Morocco's King Mohamed VI
has already ordered the opening of an embassy in Havana. Cuba is one of the few Latin
American countries where Rabat was not represented to date.
 India teams up with other nations to protect ancient heritage from terrorism. Ten nations
including India and China have come together to form a group to protect historic sites
against the onslaught of terrorism.
 Pakistani Hindus allowed to worship at Shiva temple after 20 years. A Pakistani High Court
gave permission to Hindus to conduct religious activity at a Shiva temple in Abbottabad
after almost 20 years.
 Pakistan’s Gwadar port leased to China Overseas Port Holding Company for 40 years.
Before COPHC, the control of the Gwadar port was with Singapore’s Port of Singapore
Authority (PSA) International.
 Royal agencies of Thailand brought under control of King Vajiralongkorn. The decision is
another step in giving greater say to the king, who has been reshaping the palace and
shown himself increasingly assertive on other front.
 TIME releases list of 100 Most Influential People of 2017. PM Narendra Modi featured on
the list as a political leader. He is described as a maestro of the art of political seduction,
playing on the existential fears and cultural insecurities of people facing downward or
blocked mobility.
 Former Iranian President Ahmadinejad disqualified from running for president. Iran has
barred its former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad from running in the upcoming
Presidential elections.
 Australia unveils major changes to citizenship process. Under the new law, migrants
seeking Australian citizenship would have to undergo a tough English language skills test
and ability to demonstrate Australian values. Turnbull said the announcements had been
made in the national interest.
 India contributes USD 250000 to United Nations election assistance programme. Eenam
Gambhir, a First Secretary in India's Mission to the Unite Nations, presented the cheque to

 Palestinians in Israeli prisons begin hunger strike. Previous such hunger strikers of
Palestine, who fasted for more than a week, were either released by shortening their

 US drops ‘Mother of All Bombs’ on ISIS Caves in Afghanistan. Adam Stump, the spokesman
of the Pentagon stated, “a GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb (MOAB), nicknamed
Mother of All Bombs, was dropped on a tunnel complex of ISIS-Khorasan, a regional affiliate
of the terror group, in Achin district of Afghanistan's Nanagarh province.”
 Russia vetoes UN resolution condemning Syria chemical attack. Russia vetoed UN
resolution on Syria stating that the draft had pre-judged Syria to be guilty of the attack,
prior to any investigation.
 Egypt declares three-month state of emergency after church attacks. The Islamic State of
Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is assumed to be behind the blasts in Tanta and Alexandria on
Palm Sunday (9 April 2017).
 India, Georgia signed Joint Statement on Free Trade Agreement. The joint statement
facilitates the establishment of a Joint Feasability Study Group to discuss the possibility of
bilateral Free Trade Agreement.
 Defence deals over USD 2 billion signed between India and Israel. Under the agreement the
state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) will provide advanced medium-range
surface-to-air missile systems (MRSAM) to the Indian Army.
 Thai king Maha Vajiralongkorn signs new Constitution. King Maha Vajiralongkorn has
signed the document in a ceremony at Bangkok on 6 April 2017.
 South Korea test-fires ballistic missile that can hit any part of N Korea. South Korea
successfully test-fired a ballistic missile with a range of 800 km. The missile, even when
launched from the southern part of the country, would be able to target any part of North
Korea.
 Malala to become the youngest person to address Canadian Parliament. Malala Yousafzai to
become the youngest person ever to address the Parliament of Canada at the behest of the
country’s Prime Minister.
 11 dead and over 43 injured in terror attack at Russia’s metro system. A suicide bomb blast
in the metro rail system left 11 dead and over dozens injured in Russia’s second largest city,
Saint Petersburg.
 Myanmar becomes seventh member of South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation. Up
till now, SASEC members have invested more than USD 9 billion in development projects,
which have connected markets and businesses over the last 15 years in the subregion.

Indira Banerjee appointed as new Chief Justice of Madras High Court


 Justice Indira Banerjee, a sitting judge of the Delhi High Court, has been appointed as the
new Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.
 She succeeded Sanjay Kishan Kaushal. With this, Justice Banerjee became the second
woman to head the Madras High Court. Justice Kumari Bhatnagar was the first lady to head
the Charted court in 1992.

Mukta Dutta Tomar appointed India's Ambassador to Germany


 Mukta Dutta Tomar has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Federal
Republic of Germany.
 She is presently Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs. Earlier, Gurjit Singh
was holding this post till in March 2017.

 Anthony Lianzuala takes over as Controller General of Accounts. Lianzuala, a 1982-batch


Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS) Officer, is the first person from the North-Eastern
Region to hold the position.
 Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar appointed as Director General of Central Reserve Police Force. On the
other hand, Union Government also appointed R. K. Pachnanda as the Director General of
Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
 White House names Randolph Alles as new Director of Secret Service. The White house has
named retired military general Randolph Alles as the new Director of Secret Service,
succeeding Joseph Clancy, who retired for the second time.
 Saudi Arabia King's son Prince Khaled appointed as US Envoy. The appointment of Prince
Khaled to Washington signals the Saudi kingdom’s eagerness to strengthen bilateral ties
with US under President Donald Trump.
 B N Mohapatra takes over as Financial Commissioner of Railways. Born on 15 January
1958, B N Mohapatra is an officer of Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS) of 1980 batch.
 UN chief Guterres names Achim Steiner as new administrator of UNDP. Steiner, who
previously served at the UN Environment Programme and headed the UN office in Kenya
was selected to succeed Helen Clark, a former New Zealand Prime Minister.
 Indian-origin Anuja Ravindra Dhir becomes first non-white judge at London Court. During
the schooling days, she was gulped-down up by dyslexia making it difficult for her to read
and write.
 Raman Roy appointed Chairman of NASSCOM for 2017-18. Raman Roy has been a member
of NASSCOM’s Executive Council and was the vice-chairman for 2016-17.
 Geetha Johri takes over as first woman head of Gujarat’s police force. Geetha Johri, a 1982-
batch IPS officer has been appointed as the new Director General of Police of Gujarat. With
this move, she has become the first woman to head the Gujarat’s police force.
 B P Kanungo takes over as Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India. Kanungo will look
after the departments of currency management, external investments and operations,
government and bank accounts, and information technology, payment and settlement
systems. He will also supervise foreign exchange department, legal department, premises
department and internal debt management department.
 Indian Foreign service officer appointed as new Consul General of Dubai. Indian Foreign
Service officer, Vipul was appointed as the new Indian Consul-general in Dubai.

Cricket removed from 2018 Asian Games programme


 One of the sports to miss out from the programme list of the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta
and Palembang is cricket.
 Apart from cricket, skateboarding, sambo and surfing are among the other sports which
have been removed from the programme in order to reduce the burden on
Indonesian organisers.
 This measure was taken as a part of the series of changes aimed at reducing the total
number of events from 493 to 431.

Pankaj Advani won his sixth Asian Billiards title


 Sixteen-time world champion Pankaj Advani has won his sixth Asian Billiards
title and seventh overall Asian championship.
 The ace cueist defeated his compatriot Sourav Kothari 6-3 in an entertaining final of the Asian
Billiards Championship in Chandigarh.

Sindhu lifts India Open badminton title 2017


 Olympic silver-medallist P.V. Sindhu has defeated Carolina Marin (Spain) in straight sets
21-19, 21-16 in 47 minutes at the India Open badminton championship 2017 in New
Delhi.
 This was the second Superseries title win for Sindhu. The Indian shuttler has shown
character in the tournament and she entered the final after beaten Saina Nehwal and
Sung ji-Hyun.

 Hockey India recommends Sardar Singh for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna. Hockey India has
recommended the names of SV Sunil, Dharamvir Singh and Deepika for the Arjuna Award.
 Aizawl FC becomes first north-eastern club to win 2016-17 I-League. The 2016-17 I-League
was the 10th edition of the I-League held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong.
 Leander Paes and Scott Lipsky win Tallahassee Challenger Men’s Doubles title. On the other
hand, India’s Ramkumar Ramanathan finished up as a runner-up in the Tallahassee
Challenger Men’s Singles event. The title was won by Slovenia’s Blaž Rola.
 101-year-old Mann Kaur becomes world’s oldest person to complete Auckland Sky Walk.
On 26 April 2017, Kaur broke the Guinness World Record for javelin with a throw of 5 m 12
in her final competition at the Trusts Stadium in Waitakere, west Auckland.
 Manpreet Kaur wins shot put gold at Asian Grand Prix Athletics Meet. Manpreet came up
with a best throw of 18.86 metre, a national record. In 2015, she made a national record
after throwing a shot put at the distance of 17.96 metre.
 Haryana beat Kerala to win team championship at National Youth Athletics Meet. However,
Kerala retained the team crown for girls with 100 points, while Haryana boys topped with
108.5 points at the end of the three day meet.
 101-year-old Man Kaur bags gold in 100m event at World Masters Games. The Chandigarh-
based sprinter will also compete in the 200m race on 26 April 2017. She has also registered
to take part in the shot put and javelin throw events.
 ICC names Ganguly and Ponting as commentators for upcoming Champions Trophy. Former
Indian captain Saurav Ganguly named as one of the commentators for the upcoming
Champions Trophy along with other International captains like Ponting, Sangakkara and
Smith.

Singh named as one among the eight ambassadors chosen by the International Cricket

 US, Canada & Mexico make a joint bid for 2026 FIFA World Cup. The United States makes a
joint bid with Canada and Mexico to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
 Lewis Hamilton wins 2017 Chinese Grand Prix. Ferrari driver Vettel came second, while
Red Bull's Max Verstappen stood third in the race.
 Indian Olympic Association grants affiliation to Boxing Federation of India. With this, the
BFI now becomes the fully recognised body for Indian boxing, having already been granted
affiliation by AIBA and the Sports Ministry.
 Sports Minister Vijay Goel approved appointment of Foreign Coaches in Athletics.
Australian Dave Smith's appointment as second foreign coach in race walking was cleared
in view of India's bright prospects in this discipline at the international events.
 Misbah-ul-Haq announces international retirement post West Indies series. Pakistan is
scheduled to play three Test matches against West Indies, the first of which will start on 21
April 2017 in Jamaica.
 Virat Kohli named Wisden’s Leading Cricketer in the World for 2016. Kohli also features on
the cover of the 2017 edition of the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack. It shows the cricketer
playing a reverse sweep in a Test match.

Veteran actor Kasinathuni Viswanath wins Dadasaheb Phalke award for 2016
 Renowned Director and actor Kasinathuni Viswanath has won the Dadasaheb Phalke
award for the year 2016 for his outstanding contribution to the film industry.
 He will be the 48th recipient of the award, the highest recognition in Indian cinema, which
consists of a golden lotus, a cash prize of Rs10 lakh and a shawl. President Pranab
Mukherjee will confer the award on him at a ceremony on May 3, 2017, at Vigyan Bhawan,
New Delhi

Malala to become youngest United Nations Messenger of Peace


 Malala Yousafzai, the youngest winner of the Nobel Peace Prize has become
the youngest United Nations Messenger of Peace.
 The United Nations stated that the 19-year-old Pakistani education activist will be
appointed by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on April 10, 2017, and it will help to
promote girl education around the world.

prize for best national costume. Xirelle Agustin from the Philippines won in the Teen

Tripura is selected for the Krishi Karman Award 2015-16 in small category (less than 1
million tonnes). It is honoured for a commendable increase in food grain production in
small category states.
 Vasudevan’s One Part woman wins Sahitya Akademi Award for translation of
Mathorubhagan. The controversy related to the Tamil version of One Part Woman forced
the original author Murugan to withdraw from the world of writing.
 Victoria Beckham appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Prince William
presented the honour to the pop singer turned fashion designer at the Buckingham Palace
in London.
 Pranab Mukherjee honours freedom fighters on centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s
Champaran Satyagraha. At the event, the President acknowledged the Government of Bihar
for commemorating the centenary of the Champaran Movement. He also praised the
government for organising the event to felicitate the freedom fighters of India.
 Colson Whitehead's “Underground Railroad” wins Pulitzer. In biography segment, the
year’s Pulitzer Prize went to Hisham Matar for his work The Return: Fathers, Sons and the
Land in Between.
 Tim Berners-Lee wins 2016 ACM A M Turing Award. Berners-Lee received the 2016 Turing
Award "for inventing the World Wide Web, the first web browser, and the fundamental
protocols and algorithms allowing the Web to scale".
 Dawit Isaak awarded 2017 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. The
journalist was arrested in a crackdown on the media that occurred in September 2001. His
present location is unknown.

 American Director Jonathan Demme, the Oscar-winning director behind classics like The
Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia, died in New York.
 He was 73 years old. The cause was esophageal cancer and complications from heart
disease.

Veteran Actor Vinod Khanna passes away at 70


 Veteran actor Vinod Khanna passed away in Mumbai. He was an active politician, and
Member of Parliament from Gurdaspur, Punjab.
 The actor debuted in 1968 with 'Man Ka Meet'. He received the Filmfare award in the best
supporting actor category for Haath Ki Safaai (1974), and in 1999 he received the Filmfare
Lifetime Achievement Award.

Renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Kishori Amonkar passes away


 Renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Kishori Amonkar passes away. She was 84.
 She was from Jaipur Gharana and received the Padma Bhushan in 1987 and the Padma
Vibhushan in 2002.

 Top Maoist leader Narayan Sanyal passes away. Sanyal was among the last links between
CPI(ML), considered as the father of leftwing insurgency in India and its offshoot
CPI(Maoist).
 Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Girish Chandra Saxena died. Girish Chandra Saxena
served as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir for eight years between 1990 and 2003.
 Guitar pioneer Allan Holdsworth passes away. Holdsworth was known as a guitarist’s
guitarist for his progressive rock and jazz fusion work with bands including Soft Machine,
Gong, and U.K.
 World's oldest person Emma Morano dies at 117. According to a list kept by the
Gerontology Research Group, Violet Brown from Jamaica, who was born in 1900, is now the
oldest living person.
 Internet pioneer Robert Taylor passes away. Taylor was instrumental in the creation of the
internet and modern computer.
 Pioneering HIV/AIDS researcher Mark Wainberg passes away. Wainberg is believed to have
drowned while on holiday with his family in Miami.

severe heart attack.
