2012 REGULATIONS FOR FOUR YEAR BE / BTech DEGREE PROGRAMMES


(for the batches of students admitted in 2012 - 2013 and subsequently)*

NOTE: The regulations hereunder are subject to amendments as may be made by the Academic Council
of the College from time to time. Any or all such amendments will be effective from such date and to such
batches of students (including those already undergoing the programme) as may be decided by the
Academic Council.

1. (a) PRELIMINARY DEFINITIONS AND NOMENCLATURE


In the following Regulations, unless the context otherwise requires
i) “Programme” means Degree Programme, that is BE / BTech Degree Programme.
ii) “Branch” means specialization or discipline of BE / BTech Degree Programme, like
Civil Engineering, Textile Technology, etc.

iii) “Course” means a theory or practical subject that is normally studied in a semester, like
Mathematics, Physics, etc.

iv) “University” means Anna University.

(b) CONDITIONS FOR ADMISSION


Students for admission to the BE / BTech degree programme will be required to satisfy the
conditions of admission thereto prescribed by the University and Government of Tamil Nadu.

2. DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME


i)a. Minimum Duration: The programme will extend over a period of four years* leading to the
Degree of Bachelor of Engineering (BE) /Bachelor of Technology (BTech) of the Anna
University. The four academic years will be divided into eight semesters with two semesters
per year.

Each semester shall normally consist of 90 working days or 450 hours or 540 periods of 50
minutes each.

ii)a. Maximum Duration: The student shall complete all the passing requirements of the BE /
BTech degree programme within a maximum period of 7 years (6 years for lateral entry),
these periods reckoned from the commencement of the semester to which the student was
first admitted to the programme.

 Provision is made for lateral entry of students in the third semester of the programme in all
branches of study and they will be required to satisfy the conditions of admissions thereto
prescribed by the University and Government of Tamil Nadu.

3. BE / BTech PROGRAMMES OFFERED
The following are the branches of study under BE / BTech degree programme.

4. STRUCTURE OF PROGRAMMES
i) Curriculum: The curriculum will comprise courses of study as given in section 13 infra in
accordance with the prescribed syllabi.

ii) Summer Term Courses: The courses under the title “Summer Term” shall be conducted for
4 weeks prior to the commencement of third semester during the summer. The evaluation of
these courses will be done for 100 marks with full Continuous Assessment component and
the pattern of evaluation will be as in 8(vi) c with single entry of marks for each component at
the end of the course. The summer term courses will be evaluated by following absolute
grading system discussed in sections 8(iii) b infra. Students who fail to secure either 50% of
total marks and, or the required attendance as in infra 5(i) shall be deemed to have failed in
that course and shall appear as a supplementary candidate in the next semester
examinations, the supplementary examination being conducted similar to supplementary
examination for courses with full Continuous Assessment component.
iii)a. Electives: Every student will be required to opt for electives from the list of electives relating
to his/her branch of study as given in section 13 infra. The list of electives to be opted may
include One elective from Physics, Chemistry, Language, Humanities and Mathematics
programme and Five from professional elective courses. However, a student may be
permitted to take a maximum of two electives, in lieu of professional elective courses from the
list of elective courses of other branches of BE / BTech degree programmes with specific
permission from the concerned Heads of the Departments.

b. Acceleration of Electives: A student may also be permitted to take professional electives

IV & V in the 6 and 7 semesters respectively instead of the 8 semester normal course of
study with specific permission from the concerned Heads of the Departments, in order to do
Project Work II during the full period of semester 8.
iv) One-Credit Courses: Students can also opt for one credit industry oriented courses of
15 hours duration which will be offered by experts from industry / other institution / our faculty
on specialized topics. Students can complete such one credit courses during the semesters 3
to 7 as and when these courses are offered by different departments. A student will also be
permitted to register for the one credit courses of other departments provided the student has
fulfilled the necessary pre-requisites of the course being offered subject to approval by both
the Heads of Departments. There is no limit on the number of one credit courses a student
can register and successfully complete during the above period. If a student wishes to avail
exemption of professional electives IV / V or both of the final semesters, he/she can do so by

exercising his/her option in writing to the respective Head of the Department during the
beginning of the final semester (i.e., semester 8) by following the equivalence norm that one
professional elective in the final semester is equivalent to three one credit courses completed
by the student. Out of the three one credit courses submitted for equivalence to a final
semester elective, a maximum of one one-credit course can be from humanities/language.
The grades of the students completing the one credit courses will be finalized based on
absolute grading system listed in 8(iii) infra. The grades earned by the students for the one-
credit courses which are not opted for conversion into an elective(s), will not be included in
the computation of CGPA.

v) Project Work: Every student will be required to undertake a suitable project in industry /
research organization / department in consultation with the Head of the Department and the
faculty guide and submit the project report thereon at the end of the semesters 7 and 8 on
dates announced by the College/Department.

vi) Personality and Character Development: All students shall enroll, on admission, in any
one of the personality and character development activities (NCC / NSS / YRC/Sports &
Games ) and undergo training for 40 hours during the first year.
National Cadet Corps (NCC) will have parades.
National Service Scheme (NSS) will have social service activities in and around the
College.
Youth Red Cross (YRC) society activities will include peace time activities like health &
hygiene, international friendship, awareness camps etc.
Sports & Games activities will include preparation for inter-collegiate sports events. While
the training activities will normally be during weekends, the camps will normally be during
vacation period.

vii) Credit assignment: Normally one credit per lecture hour per week is assigned for each
theory course. Laboratory, tutorial hours etc., are assigned credits equal to 0.5 credits per
hour per week for all the courses. The exact number of credits assigned to the different
courses is shown in section 13.

viii) Minimum credits: The minimum number of credits to be earned through successful
completion of the courses of study in the respective branch listed in section 13 infra, by a
student to qualify for the award of degree is provided below.

ix) Medium of instruction: The medium of instruction, examinations, project report etc. shall be
English.

5. REQUIREMENTS OF ATTENDANCE AND PROGRESS


i) A student will be qualified to appear for final examinations of any semester only if

a) he / she has satisfied the attendance requirements as per the norms given below:

Minimum attendance of 75% overall in all theory and laboratory courses put together.
and
Minimum attendance of 60% in each of the theory and laboratory courses.
.
However, a student who secures attendance between 50% and 60% in any course
and / or overall attendance between 65% and 75% in the current semester due to
medical reasons (hospitalization / accident / specific illness) or due to participation in
the College / University / State / National / International level sports events with prior
permission from Principal shall be given exemption from the prescribed attendance
requirement and he / she shall be permitted to appear for the current semester
examinations.

Students who secure less than 50% in any one of the courses or secure an overall
attendance less than 65% will not be permitted to write the current semester
examinations of all courses under any circumstances and not permitted to go to next
semester.
b) his / her progress has been satisfactory and
c) his / her conduct has been satisfactory.

ii) Students who do not satisfy the requirement that they shall undergo 40 hours of NSS / NCC /
YRC / sports & games activities (vide section 4 (vi) supra) during the first year will not be
permitted to appear for the final examinations of fifth and further semesters. Such students
are permitted to appear for the final examinations of semester 5 onwards only after
completing the above mentioned requirement.

iii) Students who do not qualify to appear for final examinations of any semester for want of
attendance and/or progress and/or conduct have to register for and redo that semester
programme at the next immediate available opportunity, subject to the approval of Director of
Technical Education and University.

6. PROCEDURE FOR COMPLETING THE PROGRAMME
i) The course work of the odd semesters will normally be conducted only in odd semesters
and that of the even semesters only in even semesters.

ii) A student will be permitted to proceed to the courses of study of any semester only if he/she
has satisfied the requirements of attendance, progress and conduct in respect of the
preceding semester and had paid fees for that semester.

7. PROCEDURE FOR REJOINING THE PROGRAMME


A student who is required to repeat the study of any semester for want of attendance/
progress/conduct or who desires to rejoin the course after a period of discontinuance or who
upon his/her own request is permitted by the authorities to repeat the study of any semester, may
join the semester which he/she is eligible or permitted to join, only at the time of its normal
commencement for a regular batch of students and after obtaining the approval from the
Commissioner of Technical Education and University. No student will however be enrolled in
more than one semester at any time. In the case of repeaters, the marks secured earlier in the
repeated courses will be discarded.

8. ASSESSMENT AND PASSING REQUIREMENTS


i) Assessment: The assessment will comprise of Final Examination (FE) and /or Continuous
Assessment (CA), carrying marks as specified in the scheme in section 13 infra. The CA
marks will be awarded on assessing the student continuously during the semester as per
guidelines 8(vi) framed by the college. The assessment for theory courses carrying CA+FE
or only CA (Full CA) will be done on relative grading system. The other courses will be
assessed by absolute grading system. However, for the purpose of reporting the performance
of a student, letter grades and grade points will be awarded as per section 8(iii)

ii) Final Examinations: Final examinations will normally be conducted during October /
November and during March / April of each year. Supplementary examinations may be
conducted at such times as may be decided by the college.

A student will be permitted to appear for the examination of a semester only if he/she has
completed the study of that semester (vide section 5 supra). A student will not be allowed to
register for final examination of any semester unless he/she simultaneously registers for the
examinations of the highest semester eligible and all the courses which he/she be in arrears
of. In the case of examination in project work, no student will be permitted to appear at the
project work examination unless he /she had submitted the project report within the
prescribed date.

A student, who is not permitted to appear at the final examination of a semester, is not
permitted to proceed to the following semester.
A student, who is not permitted to appear at the final examination of any semester has to
register for and redo the courses of that semester at the next available opportunity.

iii) Letter Grade and Grade Point: Each student, based on his / her performance, will be
awarded a final letter grade and grade point as given in the table infra for each course at the
end of each semester by following
a. Relative Grading System for theory courses having (Continuous Assessment (CA) &
Final Examination (FE) components) and Full CA component
b. Absolute Grading System for all other courses including Laboratory courses, summer
term courses, Industrial Visit cum Lecture, In Plant Training, Mini Project, One Credit
Courses and Project work I & II.

a. Relative Grading System
Each student, based on his/ her performance, will be awarded a final letter grade and grade
point as given in the table infra for each course at the end of each semester by following
relative grading system. In this system, the grades are awarded to the students based on
their performance relative to others who have registered for that particular course in all
sections/programmes.

For each course, the total mark Mj for the ‘j’ student [ie., the sum of Continuous Assessment
marks (CA) and Final examination marks (FE) in the case of theory courses or CA in the case
of courses with 100% continuous assessment component] is computed for each of the
students. The statistical parameters Mean ( ) and Standard Deviation ( ) of the distribution of
marks are arrived at as given below:

The letter grade and the grade point to each student studying theory courses (CA+FE or
Full CA) are generally awarded based on the statistical parameters, mean ( ) and standard

The Performance Analysis Committee chaired by Principal consisting of Controller
of Examinations and all the Heads of the Departments will by collective wisdom,
normalize the marks secured by the students so as to ensure that the clustering,
grading decisions have been made in a reasonable manner for all the courses.

b. Absolute Grading System
In absolute grading system, the letter grade and grade points are awarded to each
student based on the percentage of marks secured by him/her in Laboratory courses ,
Industrial Visit cum Lecture, In Plant Training, Mini Project, One Credit Courses and
Project work I & II as detailed below.

iv) Cumulative Grade Point Average:
After the completion of the programme, the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) from
the semester in which the student has joined first (first semester for regular & third semester
for lateral entry students) to the final semester is calculated using the relationship:

v) Passing a course:
a. A student shall be deemed to have passed a theory course with (CA+FE) component. if

i) he/she secures at least 50% in the final examination paper and


ii) the total marks secured by him/her(CA+FE put together) is at least (µ – 1.8 σ) or
50%, whichever is lower, where µ is the average mark of the students registered for
the course and σ is the corresponding standard deviation.

A student is deemed to have passed a theory course with Full CA component, if the total
mark secured by him/her is at least (µ – 1.8 σ) or 50%, whichever is lower, where µ is the
average mark of the students registered for the course and σ is the corresponding
standard deviation.

A student is deemed to have passed a Laboratory Course, Summer term Course,


Industrial Visit cum Lecture, In-plant Training, Mini Project and Project Work I, if the total
mark secured by him/her is at least 50%.

A student, who is absent for the final examination or withdraws from final examination or
secures a letter grade RA (Grade point 0) in any course including the summer term
courses has to register for supplementary examinations for all such courses at the next
available opportunity and complete them. Grades for the supplementary examinations will
be decided based on the original grade ranges of the class to which he/she belonged.

b. A student, who absents or who withdraws or who secures a letter grade RA
(Grade point 0) or less than 50% in final examination in any course carrying continuous
assessment and final examination marks, will retain the already earned continuous
assessment marks for the next immediate attempt only in the examination of that course
and thereafter he/she will be solely assessed by final examination carrying the entire
marks of that course.
A student, who absents or secures a letter grade RA (Grade point 0) in any course
carrying only continuous assessment marks, will be solely examined by a final
examination carrying the entire marks of that course, the continuous assessment marks
obtained earlier being discarded.

A student, who absents or secures a letter grade RA (Grade point 0) in the Industrial
Training, Industrial Visit cum Lecture, Mini Project and Project Work I&II must repeat or
undergo such further training as may be directed and secure at least E Grade..

In the case of a student who has registered for a one-credit course does not clear the
same successfully, it will be treated as ‘withdrawal’ from that course; alternatively, he/she
can re-register for the same course and complete it as and when it is offered
subsequently prior to the commencement of his/her pre-final semester (i.e., semester 7).

c. If a student fails to submit the report on Project Work on or before the date specified by
the college / department, he/she is deemed to have failed in the project work and
awarded grade RA.

A student who lacks in attendance or who fails to submit the report for the 8 semester
project work within the prescribed date or whose project report is not accepted for
reasons of incompleteness or other serious deficiencies will have to register at the
beginning of the subsequent semester following the final semester, redo and submit the
project report at the end of that semester and appear for the viva-voce examination, the
CA mark already earned being not taken into account.

A student who submits the report for the 8 semester Project Work, but could not appear
for the viva-voce examination on the scheduled date due to valid reasons, shall appear
for the viva-voce examination at the next earliest opportunity, the CA mark already
earned being taken into account.

A student who submits the report for the 8 semester Project Work and secures more
than or equal to 50% marks in CA component but less than 50% in the final project
evaluation and viva-voce examination marks put together, shall improve the same project
work and submit the same. He/she shall appear for project evaluation and viva-voce
examination at the next earliest opportunity, the CA mark already earned being taken into
account.

A student who submits the report for the 8 semester Project Work and secured less than
or equal to 50% marks in CA component and less than or equal to 50% marks in the final
project evaluation and viva-voce examination marks put together shall take up a new
project work and submit a report for the same. He/she shall appear for project evaluation
and viva-voce examination at the next earliest opportunity, the CA mark already earned
being not taken into account.

d. Supplementary Examinations
For courses under Relative Grading System:
i) Examination in a course conducted exclusively as a supplementary examination
If a student appears in the above supplementary examination, then his / her grade in
that course will be on par with the grade allotted for the same score in that course in
the immediate preceding regular examination.

ii) Examination in a course conducted as a regular examination for a batch of regular


students and as a supplementary examination for a batch of other students.

If a student appears in a supplementary examination, the examination being


conducted along with a batch of regular students, then his / her grade in that course
will be based on the grade allotted to the same score in that course applicable to the
above batch of regular students.

For courses under Absolute Grading System:


If a student appears in a supplementary examination for the above courses
including summer term courses, the grade and grade point will be awarded
according to absolute grading system based on the percentage of marks secured in
that course.

vi) Scheme of Evaluation for Theory / Laboratory / Industrial Visit cum Lecture / Inplant
Training Courses
The under-mentioned categories of courses listed below will carry 5 marks of CA for course-
wise attendance with official exemption as per the range of attendance % given below:

1. Separate tutorial note books are to be maintained by the students for all such courses.
2. In regular tutorial classes, the students are to be guided to solve problems with faculty support.
3. Assessment Tutorials are open book tests, one each to be conducted, and evaluated as per the
deadline for two assignment presentations and the marks entered (for senior classes).
4. In courses, where tutorial component is absent, 10 marks are to be allotted for mini projects etc,
the deadline of mark entry being as above.
5. In respect of first semester and final year courses, the deadline for mark entry for tutorial &
surprise quiz will be as per that of CA2 and CA3.

$ - In respect of Project Work I&II carried out and reviewed in the departments, the committee for the
reviews shall comprise of the head of the department/project coordinator, two faculty of the
department nominated by the HoD and the respective project guide(s).
However, in respect of Project Work II, carried out in industry, the committee nominated for the
second review at industry includes one faculty deputed by the department and one mentor from
respective industry.

9. QUALIFYING FOR THE AWARD OF DEGREE


A student shall be declared to have qualified for the award of the BE / BTech Degree provided

i) the student has successfully completed the course requirements and has passed all the
prescribed courses of study of the respective programme listed in section 13 within the
duration specified in section 2 and

ii) no disciplinary action is pending against the student.

10. CLASSIFICATION OF DEGREE


i) First Class with Distinction: A student who qualifies for the award of the Degree (vide
section 9 supra) in having passed all the courses of study of all the eight semesters (six
semesters in case of lateral entry students) at the first opportunity within eight consecutive
semesters (six consecutive semesters for lateral entry students) after the commencement of
his /her study and securing a CGPA of 8.50 and above shall be declared to have passed in
First Class with Distinction. For this purpose, the withdrawal from examination (vide section
11 infra) will not be construed as an opportunity for appearance in the examination. Further,
the authorized break of study (vide section 12 infra) will not be counted for the purpose of
classification.

ii) First Class: A student who qualifies for the award of the degree (vide section 9 supra) having
passed all the courses of study of semesters 1 to 8 (semesters 3 to 8 for lateral entry
students) within a maximum period of ten consecutive semesters (eight consecutive
semesters for lateral entry students) after commencement of his /her study and securing a
CGPA of 6.50 and above shall be declared to have passed in First Class. Further, the
authorized break of study (vide section 12 infra) will not be counted for the purpose of
classification.

iii) Second Class: All other students who qualify for the award of the degree shall be declared
to have passed in Second Class.

11. WITHDRAWAL FROM EXAMINATION


i) A student may, for valid reasons, be granted permission to withdraw from appearing for the
examination in any course or courses of one semester examination if he/she does not have
any history of arrears at the time of request for withdrawal. Prior permission for withdrawal
from semester examinations is to be obtained from Principal. Also, only one application for
withdrawal is permitted for that semester examination in which withdrawal is sought.

ii) Withdrawal application shall be valid only if the student is otherwise eligible to write the
examination and if it is made prior to the commencement of the examination in that course or
courses and also recommended by the Head of the Department.

iii) A student shall be eligible for award of ranking only if he/she has passed the examination in
first class or first class with distinction in the first available chance (i.e., first attempt in all the
subjects). Those who have availed the provision of break of study / withdrawal will not be
eligible for ranks.

12. TEMPORARY BREAK OF STUDY FROM THE PROGRAMME


i) A student is not normally permitted to temporarily break the study. However, if a student
intends to temporarily discontinue the programme in the middle for valid reasons (such as
accident or hospitalization due to prolonged ill health) and to rejoin the programme in a later
respective semester, he/she shall apply to the Principal through the Head of the Department
and stating the reasons therefore.

ii) A student is permitted to rejoin the programme at the respective semester as and when it is
offered after the break subject to the approval of Commissioner of Technical Education and
Anna University, Chennai.

iii) The duration specified for passing all the courses for the purpose of classification (vide
sections 10 (i) and (ii) supra) shall be increased by the period of such break of study
permitted.

iv) The total period for completion of the programme reckoned from the commencement of the
semester to which the student was first admitted shall not exceed the maximum period
specified in section 2 (ii) supra irrespective of the period of break of study in order that he/she
may be qualified for the award of the degree.

v) If any student is detained for want of requisite attendance, progress and conduct, the period
spent in that semester shall not be considered as permitted 'Break of Study' and section 12
(iii) supra is not applicable for such case.
