ATB and Mad Minute

Lesson Objectives:
1. write the standard and word form for a given decimal through the hundredths place. 2. match standard and word
form for decimals through the hundredths place. 3. Shade a grid to represent a given decimal.

Lesson Activities/Content/Materials:
1. Identify places and values we have learned.
2. Discuss and review standard and word form with students. Explain how we can also use this for decimals (relate to
money values). Now instruct students that there are places AFTER the ones place. These places are LESS than 1
whole. Tenths and Hundredths. ____ _____ ____. ____ ____ Refer to Place Value Sheet, each student will have a
place value sheet at their desk in addition to the one projected in the front of the classroom.
3. Call students to the board to write the standard form of written word forms. Discuss and practice reading (use the
word AND). Be sure to include zeros. Pause for formative assessment.
5. Show students how fractions can be converted to decimals using division. Review the steps to long division with
students. Practice problems will be put projected in the front of the classroom, the teacher will first model how to
change a fraction to a decimal with the students following along on the white boards. The teacher will then ask the
students to complete a problem on their own while the teacher assists students as needed. Pause for formative
assessment.
4. I will say the decimal and students will write in standard form. Hold up to check.
5. Decimals worksheet. Students will be working with a partner sitting next to them, the teacher will create a small
group based on observation and formative assessment during the lesson. During small group instruction the teacher
will review the steps to long division in addition to reading and writing decimals. During small group the teacher will
also use various picture aides for the students to identify that decimals are parts of a whole.

6. The teacher will have im done cards available to students who finish early.
