Lesson Topic: 2x2 Multiplication Problems (Lattice/Grilled Cheese Method)

Teacher(s): Jim Dempsey Date: Cycle Day: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Time Frame: 9:55-10:55 and 1:55-2:55

PA Common Core Standards:

M04.B-O.1 Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems
M04.A-T.2.1.2: Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one digit whole number and multiply 2 two-
digit numbers

At the Bell Learning Activity/Warm-up: ☐PSSA Math ☐Lesson Topic: 2 example review

Lesson Objectives (Learning Expectations): (As a result of this lesson)

1. Students will be able to solve two digit by two digit multiplication problems by using the Lattice method.

Lesson Activities/Content/Materials (Conditions):

1. Discuss the way we solved 2 by 2 (Bow Tie & TTT) problems this week. Complete an example of each method and
have a student come to board to demonstrate strategy used to solve problem.
2. Demonstrate and discuss how we can use this Expanded form to solve 56X48. Break apart and solve together
utilizing “Grilled Cheese” method. 56X48=

3. Guide students in completing the sample problems on the front of Teacher Created practice worksheet using the
“Grilled Cheese” method. Allow students to come to board to demonstrate their work.
4. Allow student to complete the back of the Teacher created WS using the “Grilled Cheese” strategy. Monitor
student work and pull any struggling students to the back table to provide more focused support through the
completion of WS.
