U1 AC 1.3 – How can you promote equality and diversity to your learners?
1. Good marketing and recruitment – Make sure the Equal opportunities
policy is current and up to date, this can be used to highlight the organisations commitment, make handouts available in languages the local population can easily read and understand and do your research to identify particular groups of people who may usually be overlooked and plan to include those people. 2. Induction and initial assessments – the use of induction assessments and diagnostic testing will help identify potential learning difficulties and allow me seek additional support for learners where needed, it will also identify their specific learning styles, and if there are any other considerations such as access/egress to think about for wheel chairs and the infirm. 3. Teaching & Learning – ensure all teaching materials are inclusive and adaptable, use clear concise information and avoid jargon, ensure the classroom and environment are free from potential hazards, conduct a risk assessment to identify potential hazards and risks and implement necessary changes, make sure lesson plans reflect learners needs and learning difficulties, use different learning and teaching styles to support each learners needs and provide positive encouragement and guidance for all learners and give positive feedback. 4. Assessment – ensure that assessment methods are valid, authentic, current, sufficient and reliable, know what adjustments will be needed to allow learners to undertake the assessments, liaison with awarding bodies to understand their specific requirements for the assessment procedures. 5. Evaluation – consult with learners who have received external help and support to ensure it has met with requirements, evaluate your own lessons and teaching styles to make sure they effectively comply with equality and diversity requirements, get feedback from learners.
