Arizona State University, the Building University-Industry Learning and Development through Innovation and Technology (BUILD-
IT) Alliance and sponsoring industry partner, DOW Chemical, are launching the non-credit course, EPICS (Engineering Projects in
Community Service) at four pilot universities in Vietnam this January 2018 semester:
As a result we are soliciting one faculty member from each of the above schools who will commit to developing and teaching the
EPICS course this semester (January – May 2018). ASU is offering a stipend of $1000 USD to each faculty member selected to teach
this course at their school. ASU will also provide each EPICS student project team with a stipend of $50 for project materials. As
the course is non-credit there will be no grades in the class, instead, at the end of the course there will be a final exhibition of all
student projects from all participating schools and the top 3 student projects will be awarded a prize of $500 USD.
• Have a passion for the EPICS course and EPICS student projects
• Willing to collaborate with the chosen faculty at each of the pilot schools in Vietnam
• Willing to collaborate with the EPICS ASU team in Tempe to develop curriculum for EPICS class

Identify faculty at each pilot school who will lead EPICS at their university
January 29 - February 9
Faculty work on recruiting students, creating syllabus, lesson plans and identifying student
projects from local community partners. Collaborate with ASU and pilot school EPICS teams as
needed.
February 9 - 28
TET Break. ASU available for additional syllabus, lesson plan, project review as needed.
March 4 - 17
ASU EPICS team reviews and approves proposed student projects, syllabus and lesson plans
with faculty in Vietnam.
March 18 - 24
First EPICS Vietnam classes meet. Students form teams and choose projects
JOB DESCRIPTION
The faculty member chosen will be responsible for developing and teaching the EPICS course in Vietnamese, based on the ASU
provided EPICS curriculum (curriculum and materials provided are in English). The faculty member will be responsible for all aspects
of teaching the course from deciding the day, time and location that the class will meet, to communicating with local community
organizations to secure student projects, and recruiting students. The faculty member will also be responsible to mentor students
throughout the project development process and help to organize the final exhibition and judge the student projects.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Develop EPICS course syllabus and course schedule to meet as a class at least 2 hours each week – modeling ASU EPICS
syllabus – faculty will adapt
• Collaborate with other 3 EPICS faculty in Vietnam to begin and end course on same schedule and ensure the same
materials are being taught
• Collaborate with EPICS faculty at ASU to ensure syllabus and lesson plans are reviewed and approved by ASU EPICS team.
• Identify local community organizations and secure 4 - 6 original new student projects for EPICS student teams to work on
throughout course.
• Recruit 20-30 students (at least 25% of whom are women) from your university who will participate in and complete the
EPICS course. There will be 4 - 5 students on each team working together on 1 community project.
• Attend final showcase and help in judging final student projects along with the EPICS ASU Vietnam team
ASU will support the chosen faculty from each school through the duration of the EPICS course and commits to the following:
• Provide marketing materials in Vietnamese to help faculty recruit students for course
• Provide marketing materials in Vietnamese to help faculty recruit local community organizations to offer student projects
• Allow access to the Maker Innovation Spaces in Danang and Ho Chi Minh City for student teams to work on EPICS projects
• Provide up to $50 USD for materials for each student project team
• Lead the judging of the student projects at the final project showcase
