Abstract:
The present study is an attempt to know about the problem towards Energy
management techniques adopted in household in Manarcad Panchayath . 50 households
in Manarcad Panchayath were selected for the study. A questionnaire prepared by the
investigator was administered to the 50 households. The study revealed that although
most of the households are aware of the conservation of energy, but they are least
bothered about it. 52% of the people knew the star ratings on their electrical appliances.
Majority of the households conserve energy.
Key terms: Energy Management
Introduction:
Energy conservation is the efforts made to reduce the consumption of energy by
using less of an energy service. This can be achieved either by using energy more
efficiently or by reducing the amount of services used. Energy conservation is a part of
the concept of eco-sufficiency. Energy conservation reduces the need for energy services,
and can result in increased environmental quality, national security, personal financial
security and higher savings. It is at the top of the sustainable energy hierarchy. It also
lowers energy costs by preventing future resource depletion.
Energy can be conserved by reducing wastage and losses, improving efficiency
through technological up gradation and improved operation and maintenance.
Efficient energy use, sometimes simply called energy efficiency, is the goal to reduce the
amount of energy required to provide products and services. For example,
Installing fluorescent lights, LED lights or natural skylights reduces the amount of energy
required to attain the same level of illumination compared with using
traditional incandescent light bulbs. Improvements in energy efficiency are generally
achieved by adopting a more efficient technology or production process or by application
of commonly accepted methods to reduce energy losses.
Energy management is unquestionable of great importance to all of us since we rely
on energy for everything we do every single day. Energy supplies are limited and, to
maintain a good quality of life, we must find ways to use energy wisely. Reducing the
amount of energy that we use in a good way to save money, and there are also other
benefits to decreasing energy consumption. Embrace energy conservation by making
small change that will lead to a significant difference in our overall energy consumption
our effort, combined with those of other who have chosen to make a few small changes to
will benefit our life and the lives of future generations,as well as our environment.
Objectives of the study
1. To examine the energy management measures adopted in households in Manarcad
Panchayath.
2. To know whether people are aware about energy management.
Methodology
Survey method was adopted for the study. 50 household in Manarcad Panchayath,
Kottayam were taken as the sample for the study. For the survey, the investigator
prepared a questionnaire consisting of 23 questions. The questions were framed with an
intention to find out the amount of energy management and amount of energy spent or
lost in various households. The questions also were focusing to know about peoples
concern towards energy management and various energy conservation tips.
The respondents were given proper instructions and during the survey so that were
able to complete the questionnaire within limited time. In addition to questions the
respondents also shared some of the problem they face in relation with the management
of energy in households.
Analysis and Interpretation of Data
On analyzing the data collected it was found that almost 76% of the people always
turnoff or unplug large equipment [like televisions, computers, etc] at the end of the day.
It was happy to note that 100% of the people preferred to give importance to save
energy.
Around 60% of the people have opportunity to reduce energy use at home. Only
92% of the people were aware of the importance of energy saving at home. 94% of the
people practice energy saving techniques at home.
It was quite disappointment to note that around 68% of the people is not aware
about basic energy saving tips, i.e, turnoff lights and fan when leaving a room. Around
100% of people choose energy efficient products when they purchase electrical
household appliances and they told that purchasing of energy saving bulbs.
82% of people interested to participating energy saving activities in the future.
Around 56% of the people were energy management and monitoring system.68% of
people have the habit of checking the electrical appliances
periodically to ensure their proper functioning.
Almost 52% of the people knew the star ratings on their electrical appliances. Also it
was quiet surprising to note that around 72% of the people agree to the fact of using solar
system instead of inverter or generator to save electricity. They also mentioned that they
had adopted these methods many years earlier itself.
And nearly 96% of the people have the habit of pay the electricity bill regularly.
Around 92% of the people buy costly star rated appliances for a cheaper of the people
buy star rated appliances. It was happy to note that around 80% of the people have solar
powered equipment at home.
Around 60% of people have the habit of checking the refrigerators door to make sure
that it is completely closed whereas the next half failed to check that they told the busy
life schedules make them to forget all the required needs and duties. It was noticed that
only 92% of the people have of switching off iron-box to use up residual energy. And the
remaining 8% of the people failed to do .Some of them told they are unaware of the
method of using up the residual energy by switching off iron-box.
94% of the people were interested in following various energy saving tips and
methods thereby reducing the electricity bill. It was found that around 86% of the people
agreed that the usage of electrical appliances is more during night time than the day time
in their households.
It was quiet disappointing to note that only small percentage (around 50%) of the
people know the current pricing slab. 78% of the people have the habit of checking the
electrical appliances periodically proper functioning.
It was quite disappointing to note that none of the people have the monthly electricity
below 500.It was also noticed that nearly 6% people have electricity bill ranging from
5001000.Around 90% of the people had electricity bill ranging from 1000-2000 and 4%
of the people have monthly electricity bill above 2000. The diagrammatic
representation of percentage distribution of electricity bill for a month is given in figure1.

Findings and Conclusion

The study revealed that although most of the households are aware of the conservation of
energy, but they are least bothered about it. It was quite disappointment to note that
around 68% of the people is not aware about basic energy saving tips, i.e., turnoff lights
and fan when leaving a room. Around 100% of people choose energy efficient products
when they purchase electrical household appliances and they told that purchasing of
energy saving bulbs. 52% of the people knew the star ratings on their electrical
appliances. Majority of the households conserve energy.
An energy-efficient home will keep our family comfortable while saving you money.
Whether we take simple steps or make large investments to make our home more
efficient, we will see lower energy bills. Over time, those savings will typically pay for
the cost of improvements and put money back in our pocket. When we waste energy in
our homes, we are throwing away money that could be used for other things. The key to
these savings is to take a whole house approach by viewing your home as an energy
system with interdependent parts.
