January 2003 Round 2

Group R2-99
Presentation by Smith Red Baron: Stuck pipe / Jarring

Date: between 28/12 and 7/1/03 (except 30/12)…?

Materials available:
 Classroom;
 Beamer (for laptop or PC);
 White board / flipchart

Presentation/discussion should focus on Round 2 material/questions:

To give you some idea I’ve stated some of the typical questions the guys have prepared:

1. Difference between Drilling Jar, Fishing Jar and Surface Jar;

2. How does the Jar exactly work (stick to principles, not detailed nuts and bolts);
3. When and why do you need an accelerator;
4. Do you run a Jar in compression or tension;
5. Position of Jar in BHA;
6. How many DC’s above Jar (or between Jar and accelerator)?
7. Terminology (firing, blowing, cocking, tripping a jar, etc…);
8. How about placement in horizontal wells?
9. How about two jars in the drillstring?
10. If you exceed the Max. Jar detent load, what do you pull apart, i.e. loose BHA, exceed body
yield?
11. How about the inclusion of bumper sub with a Jar…?
12. Jar load calculations with focus what you see on Martin Decker.
13. Do you use Drillstring weight in mud or air after being stuck?
14. What is the correct back-off procedure? (Aks them to show you the procedure in their DENB).

Type of Round 2 questions:

Typical stuck pipe questions being asked in Round 2:

A scenario of stuck pipe is given with subsequent questions:

 What is the maximum load the driller can pull on his Martin Decker (incl. String above jar,
block, kelly, hook) before he exceeds the max. detent working load of the jar?
 What is the maximum pull after the jar has fired?
 Stuck pipe mechanism?, i.e. cause of stuck pipe and how to free same?
 Max torque, that can be applied after having a certain hookload?
 Calculations by reducing Hydrostatic head by circ. Diesel oil.
