William H. Cooper Leadership Scholarship
What are your leadership strengths and weaknesses and what new experiences and skills do you intend to
gain in collegiate years to help you grow as a leader?

From a young age, I have always possessed a take-charge personality. I view myself as a natural
leader; I find myself constantly gravitating towards positions of leadership. My father is a manager and
he always tells me that developing good relationships will get you further than force. I believe that I heed
this and show empathy and compassion. I attempt to always be genuine towards others and give them
my full attention. I enjoy developing relationships; however, there are 125 people in my graduating class,
and most of us have went to school here since our youth. This means that our options for meeting new
people are slim. In my upcoming college years, I hope to meet as many new people as possible. This
will help me develop my skills because it will teach me how to interact with different people who all
possess different personalities and beliefs. I also believe that I display immense amounts accountability.
Although I am human, and humans make mistakes and forget things, I try to be as responsible and
dependable as possible because I expect to gain that same respect from others. I try to remain
optimistic and be an encourager to others, because I have seen the huge impact a little positivity can
have on a person or a challenging situation. It only takes one person to believe in someone for them to
accomplish greatness. A challenge of mine is being a perfectionist. I always expect myself to give my
best, and I also expect this from others. When I fall short, I see it as a failure, and think about how I
could have done better. This desire for perfection affects even the small tasks, which can contribute to
added, unnecessary stress for all involved. I also expect people to give me as much effort as I give
them, which can often lead to feelings of resentment or disappointment. I plan on bettering myself as a
leader throughout my college years, and hopefully throughout the rest of my life as well.

Name a leader and describe how he or she has influenced your life.

Leaders should be a contribution to their environment, display positivity, know their team, and build up
new leaders to take their place. I am an athlete who competes in cross country, basketball, and track.
Two years ago, I was playing in a championship game with my high school team, and I came down
wrong and shattered my knee. I tore my ACL, MCL, had two fractures in my femur, tore my meniscus,
and had severe bone bruising. I have been involved in sports since I could walk, so being sidelined was
devastating; lots of tears were shed and my spirits were low. My mind flooded with negative thoughts
about myself and my recovery. However, it just takes one person to step up, be a leader, and change
everything. Our team captain, Kenzie Guese, noticed the state I was in. Instead of brushing it off and
focusing on herself and her skills, she took me aside and said, "Listen, I know what you are going
through is hard, but you need to stop feelings sorry for yourself and work on getting better so that you
can come back next year better than ever. I will help you get back to where you were." And that, she did.
We shot every day after practice. We worked on my skills and speed. A long six months later, I was
playing again and I was better than I had ever been. I can only attribute my success to Kenzie. She not
only led the team with her radiant positivity and encouragement, she helped me when I was down, even
though it did nothing for her because she would be graduated by the time I got to play again. That is
what a true leader is: someone who stays positive and helps people, even if it is not going to help them.
Kenzie trained me and helped me become captain the next year, despite my troubling previous season.
When I think about the type of leader I want to be, I think of Kenzie Guese and her unwavering
selflessness, positivity, and encouragement.
