Section B: Summary
The following is a story about a young gang member who was involved in a
prank on a student.

1. I'll tell you now, I had nothing to do with it. I was there and all, but there's not
much a kid like me can do to stop big kids from doing what they want. I was just
laughing with the other kids, and I guess when you're laughing, and not telling
them to stop, it kind of makes you feel like you are part of it. But it wasn't my
idea, and I guess I don't feel as bad about it as Craig and Bruce.
2. They're the ones whose idea it was. They're big kids, almost sixteen, and if
you want to hang around with them you just do what they say, or else! They don't
want little kids screaming at them or telling them what to do, so us little kids just
shut up and go along with what they say. It's best for us because I've seen Craig
smack little kids, even girls, right in the face for not doing what he says.

3. Anyway, one day Craig and Bruce decided to play a trick on Johnny Bell.
Johnny's a fat kid who lives just up the road. Well, he doesn't actually live up the
road any more. He doesn't live anywhere... because he's dead.
4. Everyone was always playing tricks on Johnny. He wasn't as smart as the
other kids and I suppose he was pretty easy to play tricks on. He wasn't such a
bad kid though. He was bigger than everyone else, but I never once saw him get
mad or hit anyone. He didn't seem to mind when kids played tricks on him. At
least that way he could muck around with us.
5. "Lets play a game,'' Craig said. "What game?'' Bruce smiled and said. "Blind
man's buff, and Johnny's the blind man.''
6. So Bruce took his handkerchief out and tied it around Johnny's head, then
spun him around a few times. Craig and Bruce started walking around the
playground, and we all followed. The kept yelling out. "Over here Johnny. Over
here.'' Everyone was laughing, even Johnny. He was swinging his arms, trying to
grab us, and giggling his head off, and we were all giggling our heads off. It was
pretty funny.
7. Then Craig and Bruce decided to play a trick on Johnny. The led him up onto
the big dirt mound with the cliff and then climbed down the rope wall and stood at
the bottom saying, "Over here, Johnny. Over here.''
8. Us little kids were standing on the edge of the cliff, laughing, and Johnny was
swinging his arms all over the place, laughing and trying to grab us. Craig and
Bruce were down below yelling. "Over here, Johnny, over here,''
9. I thought that when Johnny got to the edge, Craig and Bruce would tell him to
stop, but they didn't. The just kept yelling to him. Johnny tried to grab one of us
and went right over the edge.
10. It's a long way down. That's why they've got the rope there; so you can climb
up and down. It's too far to jump. A kid busted his leg there once.
11. Anyway, when Johnny went over the edge, he landed right on his head,
because he was trying to grab us and he sort of flipped over. I don't think Johnny
knew he was on the edge. He must have known he was on the mound, because
he would have felt it as he walked up, but I don't think he knew he was on the
edge.
12. Everyone stopped laughing when Johnny went over the edge. We all climbed
down the rope wall and stood around looking at him. His head was sort of twisted
away from his body, as if it wasn't really his head at all. There was blood coming
out of his mouth.
13. Johnny's pink face just rested there in the mud. He made me think of a
beached whale that I had seen on the news. Just lying there. None of us had
seen a dead kid before. It was weird. Kind of sudden.
14. We all knew he was dead, just by looking at him. You could tell. No one had
to say: "He's dead,'' like they do on telly. I guess they only say that on telly to let
the viewers know, because when someone's dead in real life everyone knows it.
15. We just looked at each other as if we'd done the worst thing a bunch of kids
could do. Someone said that we should go and get Johnny's dad, and one kid
ran off. No one said much. We just stood around looking at Johnny, waiting for
his dad to come.

16. He came pretty quickly. He was running. I was hoping that Johnny's dad
would yell at us and tell us to go home, but he didn't.
17. He knelt down in the mud and put his head on Johnny's chest. I think he was
listening for Johnny's heartbeat. He must have known Johnny was dead, but I
guess he was hoping he would hear a heartbeat anyway.
18. Then Johnny's dad started crying. I'd never heard a grown-up cry before.
They don't howl like kids. They just make a funny sort of whimpering noise. Then
Johnny's dad started saying, "My boy, my boy'', over and over again. Johnny just
lay there with his face in the mud and the blindfold still on. It was awful.
19. After that the ambulance came and the police came and a few neighbours
came out to see what was going on. They placed Johnny on a stretcher, covered
him with a blanket and put him in the ambulance. The ambulance went off really
slowly with its light flashing.
20. The police took each kid off separately and asked us what had happened. I
think everyone told the truth because it'd be hard to lie to the police.
21. Then the police took us all home in their car and told our parents about
Johnny. Mum and dad weren't mad at me. Everyone was really quiet about it. No
one yelled at us. Sometimes I wish they would.
22. Later on I heard Mum and Dad talking about Johnny. They said that seeing a
thing like that could have a bad effect on a kid. I don't think it's had a bad effect
on me, but hardly a day goes by without me thinking about how Johnny went
over the edge.
