 WHO WE ARE

PIAM is a secular association located in Asti composed

by Italian and immigrant social operators. Since 2000
we focus on women and immigration, with special
attention on victims of trafficking and exploitation.
In 2011 we also started some accommodation and
integration projects for asylum seekers and refugees.

The association is recorded in the “Register of

associations and institutions which perform activities
for immigrants” under the Presidency of the Council
of Ministers, Social Affairs Department, referred to
art.52 of the implementing regulation of T.U. n.286/98

The association is recorded in the “Register of the

associations and institutions which provide activities
against discrimination”, under the Presidency of
the Council of Ministers, Department of Equal
Opportunities, referred to art.6 of the July 9th 2003
decree law, n. 215.

POLICY AREAS
TRAFFICKING AND PROSTITUTION

The main mission of PIAM is to support victims of

trafficking, especially the one exploited in prostitu-
tion. On the streets we meet different type of women,
the one forced to prostitution and the one that have
chosen it willingly.In Italia la prostituzione è legale, lo

We don’t condemn and we don’t discriminate.

in Italy prostitution is legal, exploitation is not.
On the streets we offer healthcare to all the women
involved in prostitution, especially to prevent AIDS
and sexually transmitted diseases. Providing assistan-
ce is the first step to create a trust relationship with
the women engaged in prostitution and afterward we
propose them the opportunity to leave the road and
start a new normal life with the support of social ser-
vices. If a woman that prostitutes get a disease even
though she decides to leave the job, it is not a fore-
gone conclusion that she will still be in time to heal
herself in a effective way. This situation can stron-
gly affect her future. We work to help all the women
exploited in prostitution to have a good life without
been forced to sell their bodies.

Data
In 2017 we welcomed: 11 victims of trafficking
all Nigerians. Two of them are underage. We made
more than 100 anti-trafficking counselings in re-
fugees accommodation centers to identify victims
of trafficking, in collaboration with SPRAR, and the
“Territorial Commission for the right of Asylum” and
Prefecture.

PIAM is the managing body of the SPRAR accommodation projects of the

Municipalities of Asti and Chiusando d’Asti. In collaboration with the
CO.AL.A consortium we also implement the familiar/widespread reception
program in the province of Asti.

VOICE OF FREEDOM
I lead Voice of Freedom, a photography project
where trafficked women take the cameras into
their own hands cameras more often used to
objectify them, to represent the women as nothing
more than projections of a viewer’s de- sire or
shame.
The media loves a tragic story. What fits less well
with its usual narrative is the idea of a trafficked
person as an equal: someone who, but for poverty
and geography, might be a friend.
This october 2017, Voice of Freedom worked in
Asti, at the Piam onlus shelter, with 10 women
who had been trafficked from Nigeria, through
the brothels and prisons of Libya, via terrifying
journeys across the sea in boats hardly worthy
of the name, into italy where contrary to their
ex- pectations of a job such as beautician, hairdres-
ser or jewellery maker, they were set to work as
prostitutes on the street. Any woman who refu-
sed might be starved, certainly would be beaten;
if she managed to escape from her trafficker, the
woman would have to sleep on the street, pen-
niless, undocumented, and longing for those she
had left at home.
Into these women’s hands, Voice of Freedom
placed cameras and asked them to think about
the messages they wanted to send into the world.
in two intensive weeks, women and fa- cilitators
created a group where trust was key. The women,
from different tribes and regions of Nigeria,
discussed together how they had been trafficked,
the effects of poverty and women’s inequality,
and the deception of the people traffickers who
had brought them there.

The women began to consider themselves as a

body to externalize individual suffering into a
wider message. This was no longer simply about
personal tragedy and survival: their experiences
became part of a structure, a larger whole, and
began to have meaning, which they defined.
We considered the concept of ‘advocacy’, and
explained that through this work, if the women
chose, they could advocate for their and their
communities’ needs. Media is powerful: The tool
was now in their hands. Each woman in the
group took to the work. We visited World Press
Photo exhibition in Turin, where for the first time
they saw the power of media to communicate
experiences such as theirs. Then they decided
they could do it better, because they were the
ones who had had those experiences: the stories
were theirs to tell. We witnessed what happens
when a woman who has not had a chance to
speak her own truth does it for the first time the
dignity and power of their work, in contrast to
the artificiality of documentation by those on the
outside. With the women’s permission, Voice of
Freedom will share this photography with anti
trafficking campaigners and lawmakers. We also
plan to exhibit it in Italy, the UK and beyond.
In it, you see each woman as a whole person,
with a whole life a before. She is more than
just the sum of her trafficking experiences the
work humanizes. We see through her eyes and
understand that she is the best communicator
of a life unknowable in any other way. Empathy
arises through listening, not objectification,
which can trigger in the viewer pity, or, through
a sense of powerlessness, a turning away
and disgust. So here is a small selection of the
women’s work, with its unexpected perspectives
and utterly compelling detail that draws us close,
as if listening to a trusted friend.

Villa Quaglina’s wine
Once upon a time... in the Villa Quaglina’s
farm (Asti,Valle Tanaro), there was a vineyard
sow for Barbera, a small piece of land but in a
good position (Terrazza, south exposed). It was
abandoned and compromise by MLO.
A native vineyard destined to disappear... but
one day in the farm of Villa Quaglina some bold
young men came from distant lands. With them
they brought a grape variety as vain and vigorous
as them. They implanted it in the Vineyard of
Villa Quaglina, replacing the plants now dead.
Thus a new wine, MODIBÒ, was born from the
mixture of Barbera and Sirah grapes, a wine that
has given life back to the historic vineyard of
Villa Quaglina adding strength, vigor and hope
for the future …
The adventure began in March 2016: the
dead plants have been removed. those left,
although largely ill, have been pruned or
headed in an attempt to recover them. The
removed plants have been replaced by 350
cuttings, choosing the Syrah for the greater
resistance to flavescence, as well as for the
excellent quality of the grape, even though it is
not Piedmontese. In May 2017 we also planted
2 rows of table grapes, with the intention of
“motivating” workers who do not drink wine.
Under the supervision of 2 expert winemakers,
the Villa Quaglina’s vineyard is cultivated by
some refugees.
Young and strong boys, coming from far to help
our territory to keep its traditions and ancient
cultures. A bit like the Sirah vine, robust and
resistant, which came also from a distance to
guarantee our vineyards.

Terre di Monale
Rediscover the artisan techniques of processing
the ceramic. Making high quality crockery, unique
and customizable according to specific needs of its
customers, and contributing so meaningfully to
preserve a baggage of traditions deeply rooted in
our territory which is at at risk of being lost with
the advent of the new industrial “technologies”.
They are not artisan quality: the added value on
our dishes is also in their being created between
a wide-ranging ethical and social project. “Terre
di Monale”, in fact, was born to show that it
is possible to do business with young African
women victims of trafficking. Women, in most
cases, illiterate or poorly educated, and intended
almost always to find unqualified and precarious
occupations. Fragile women, torn from the road
and in high risk of returning to the prostitution
exploitation system.
Terre di monale is therefore configured as a virtuous
alternative to this model, as a business project that
can create profit and, at the same time, teach these
girls a qualified, rewarding and well paid job.

VILLA
QUAGLINA’s fields
Villa Quaglina is the former seminar of the “Obla-
tes of St. Giuseppe” in Asti. A beautiful villa of the
last century surrounded by greenery, with adjoi-
ning farmhouse and surrounding park of six hec-
tares of arable land, no more used for years. In
2014, the CO.AL.A Consortium and PiAm Onlus,
gave new life to this plexus, starting the welco-
ming refugee activity. And in this context, starting
from the reception, the project started to enhance
and preserve Piedmontese agro-food excellence
and started a new idea of social enterprise.
