Overview
This Dharavi slum tour provides a window into Mumbai's working neighborhood, and the
area is best explored with a guide to gain a well-rounded view without getting lost. On this
tour, you'll explore the alleyways of makeshift homes and workshops, and meet the locals,
learning how they live. Most proceeds go back into the community, and you'll explore in a
small group limited to six. Upgrade for round-trip transport for convenience.
What to Expect
Book your preferred tour option and meet your guide to make your way by train or foot to
Dharavi. Alternatively, upgrade for round-trip transport from a designated location (see
Itinerary for details).

On arrival, take a walking tour through the alleyways of households and businesses, learning
from your guide about the working conditions of the textile-making, potteries, leather-
tanning, and recycling businesses.

Discover the area's tight-knit sense of community and religious diversity, and tour the
recycling district, where plastics and old computers arrive from worldwide.
Visit a bakery that makes tea biscuits, see artisans crafting clay pots, and watch local women
cooking poppadom (flatbreads). Explore a replica home, view photos taken by children in an
art project, and visit an NGO-sponsored community hub where people come to learn and
enjoy activities.

After a soda at a reception center, make your way back according to your chosen option.

Please note: Your tour guide is sensitive to the issues surrounding slums and understands that
this tour may not be suitable for everyone. Guides believe that the purpose of this tour is for
educational reasons alone and allows for a better understanding of Indian life inside Dharavi.

Optional Upgrade with Transport by Air-Conditioned Vehicle:
Meet your guide at the tour operator's office in Colaba and travel by air-conditioned vehicle
to Dharavi, taking in a few points of interest along the way. During the approximate 1-hour
drive, pass through the red-light district of Kamathipura and make a brief stop at Dhobi Ghat,
the world's largest open-air laundry.

On the way, hear knowledgeable commentary from your guide about the history of the slums
as well as issues affecting the poorer members of Mumbai society. After your 2.5-hour
walking tour of Dharavi slum, travel back to the Colaba office by car with your guide.

Forget what you think you know about "poverty tourism"

Like many people, I was hesitant (and frankly, someehat judgemental) to participate in
"poverty tourism." I imagined something dehumanizing, a zoo where priviledged foreigners
stared at the extremes of "third world" poverty and then went back to their air conditioned
