DEFINITION

A tsunami is a wave of long period of time, which spreads with great speed
through the ocean. When it reaches the coast, it possesses a great destructive
power; such is its strength that it can devastate relatively large buildings, and
even inland. It is among the largest natural disasters facing countries with
coasts.

What to do before...? Locate a high place and more than one evacuation
route. If you live on the coast, find out how much above sea level and how far
from the coast your house is. Evacuation needs can be based on these
parameters. An earthquake, a loud underground noise, or a rapid rise or fall of
the tide are symptoms of a tsunami. Everyone in the family should know how to
act, how to cut off the gas, electricity and water supply, and emergency
numbers they can call if necessary. Establish a meeting point, in case the family
is dispersed. Have your emergency kit at hand.

What to do during...?
If you hear information that there may be a tsunami or detect signs in that
direction, evacuate the area immediately. Go up to a high place.
Get away from the beach. Do not go to see a tsunami. If you can see the wave,
it will be too close to escape from it.
A tidal wave or tsunami is a series of waves, so do not assume that after the
first wave the risk passed. The successive waves can be larger. Move away
from the place and do not return to your home until the danger has completely
passed.

What to do after...?
Go back to your home when there is no danger, and stay away from damaged
buildings.
If you go back to find people looting, do not face them alone. Ask the
Carabineros for help.
Enter your home with caution and a flashlight. If possible, carry out a review of
the electricity, water, gas and telephone taking the precautions indicated in the
inspection of basic services. Check for short circuits or wires in sight. Do not
connect the light until an electrician has checked the system.
Open the windows to dry the place. Scoop the mud while it is still wet.
Check the supply of drinks and drinking water. Water and food may have been
contaminated with floodwater, in which case they should not be used.
If possible, collect water in tubs and other containers, in case the supply is cut
off. Boil the water you are going to drink.
Listen to the radio or television for information about the emergency and
possible instructions from the authority in charge.
Help people who are injured or trapped. If there are injured, ask first aid for
emergency services. Help your neighbors who have elderly relatives, disabled
or young children.
